A somewhat different thriller based around psychic visions of impending violent murders. A young girl is the central character with the psychologist who attempts to help her. A series of brutal murders all foreseen by the main character and her connection to them make her the number one suspect. The psychologists personal story interweaves with the main plotline and the relentless violence graphically described all building to a long brutal climax An uncomfortable read but strangely satisfying!
It is a chilling thriller i love all in the series, it's like catching up with a old friend.
The pace did pick up towards to the end. I sat with my mouth open places and feeling my heart ache. Did not expect the end at all look forward to more in the series. Thanks to the publishers and NetGalley for advanced copy x
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 5 gripping stars
Loved it! I’ve read all the author’s previous books, they are all 4 or 5 stars, so I was looking forward to this stand alone book.
It did not disappoint. Fast paced, twisty turns, great characters, a few shocks along the way and an ending I wasn’t expecting.
I read this book in a day and can’t recommend it enough!
A Gift for Dying is a rollercoaster of a read.
With a serial killer on the loose performing terrifying acts of violence on his prey, the police seem no closer to finding him as the body count rises. The only link to the victims is Kassie a 15 year old girl who has appeared at the scenes of these crimes.
Forensic psychologist Adam Brandt has been ask to assess whether Kassie is capable of aiding and abetting these murders. What he learns is unbelievable, Kassie has a gift that when she looks into a persons eyes she can see how and when that person is going to die. Completely sceptical at first Adam starts realising she could be telling him the truth.
So begins this great thriller, you are taken on an exciting, fascinating, macabre and heartbreaking journey.
I have loved all this authors Helen Grace series, and can’t wait for the next, but this book.....this was special, a wonderful read, so skilful and entertaining one that will remain with me for some time.
My thanks to net galley and publisher for the opportunity to review this book honestly.
This is my first M.J.Arlidge book and ohhh it was good, very very good. I was hooked right from the beginning doing my usual and reading just another chapter as I always do when a book grabs me and I can’t put it down. I love a good thriller that you can get your teeth into and this is most certainly one of those, I liked the characters (especially Kassie) they felt real and the plot line was different making it even more enjoyable. It was one of those books that you really couldn’t predict what was going to happen next and the pace just kept up racing to a thrilling and satisfying ending. Thank you M.J.Arlidge for a well recommended and fabulous read.
My thanks also to NetGalley and Penguin UK - Michael Joseph for giving me the chance to read the ARC in exchange for my honest opinion
As is usual for this author, the book was fast paced, dramatic, and inmersive.
But... it was weird that 3 adults made a point of noticing how attractive the 15 year old girl at the centre of the story was. Utterly unnecessary.
This is a murder mystery with a difference and it's good.
Kassie is a young girl who can tell if and when someone is going to die just by looking into their eyes. Things become complicated when she realises that a number of people she is trying to warn are all being murdered by the same man. This character is written so well as we share Kassie's frustration at her 'gift' as well as her not being able to stop the killings.
Adam is a psychiatrist who, at first glance, has it all. However, as the story develops we also experience his heartache, grief and despair.
The killer is a gruesome one and there were elements that I'm afraid I skipped, due to the nature of the killings. However, with a team of interesting detectives also in the mix, this is a well written cat and mouse tale that builds suspense throughout.
I've enjoyed many of M J Alridge's books and this is no exception.
Thanks to NetGalley, Penguin UK - Michael Joseph and the author for the opportunity to preview.
Hi, I’m not sure if this is the correct way to do this, however,
I love M J Arlidges Helen Grace series, and when I saw a novel by her available, I requested it based on her name. However, I didn’t realise it wasn’t a Helen Grace book
Unfortunately, due to dealing with a person of mental illness in my everyday life, I found the book too uncomfortable to read. I read about 20%. I’m sure it will be as excellent as all of the other M J Arlidge books, but with Adam being a psychologist, and Kassie being mentally unstable, I am sorry to say it is too close to h9me and uncomfortable for me too read.
My apologies. I did rate it 5stars as I don’t want my situation to effect the books rating

Adam Brandt is a forensic psychologist, used to dealing with damaged people, but he’s never met anyone like Kassie before. She claims to have a gift, with one look into your eyes she can see how and when you will die. Kassie must be insane surely?
But then, a serial killer hits the city and only Kassie seems to know where and who he will strike next. Against his intuition, Adam starts to believe her. However, he doesn’t know how deadly his faith might prove.
This was an excellent thriller with the killer being very sick and twisted. The killings made me squirm a bit but I enjoyed turning the pages to find out what was going to happen to the characters.
Hope there are more stand alone after this one!
Many thanks to Netgalley and Penguin UK for an advanced copy of this book in exchange for my honest reviews.
This book reminds me of the way Dean Koontz writes and I really enjoyed it..I wasn’t sure if the psychic abilities of the main female character would be a bit far fetched but its really well written,
Thank you to Netgalley, the publisher and author for an advanced copy of this book.
If you think it's going to be anything like the Helen Grace novels then think again.
Young Kassie has the ability to see when people are going to die, just by looking into their eyes, and she's locked on to those who have been targeted by a very sick individual.
Dr Brandt is the Psychologist who has been brought in to help her but does he believe Kassie can see what she says she sees, or is she playing him along?
Not going to give too much away but I really enjoyed it, even though I wanted to smack Kassie for the choices she was making. But hey, she's a fifteen-year-old seeing horrific deaths, so I'll let her off!!
I have read all of the Helen Grace books and enjoy the series immensely. I was therefore excited to see a new book by the same author. I will start by saying that I didn't enjoy this book as much, perhaps it was the setting (America) rather than the UK, making it less familiar. However, that is a personal preference rather than a criticism of how it was written. The story was an interesting premise (being able to foresee death) and the burden that comes with this. The book had some interesting twists that were unexpected - including ones that do not necessarily happen at the end so it certainly shocked the reader at various points. I did think the pace dropped a bit in the latter half of the book and it seemed to be less about who the killer was compared to the relationships between other characters. Overall, I would still look forward to reading standalone books as well as future Helen G books.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book! I'm a big fan of Arlidge's writing already, but this was really fantastic. The characters are all very strong, the story runs along at a swift pace, and I was hooked right until the very end. The only problem I have with this book is that there isn't more!
Kassie has a gift she can look into your eyes and she can predict when you will die. This gift can also make life very difficult. A serial killer is murdering people in the city, Kassie says she can help she can hear their screams. The forensic psychologist, Alan Brandt, starts working with Kassie to solve the case. Will they get there in time?
I am a huge fan of the authors Helen Grace series so I jumped at the chance to read this stand-alone book.
Kassie is a fifteen year old girl with a special 'gift' she can look into your eyes and know when and how you are going to die. When a serial killer is on the loose in Chicago she knows who his next victim will be and is soon a suspect in the murders.
This is a suspenseful, gory thriller which I raced through in no time.
4 stars ****
Being a massive fan of the authors DI Helen Grace series, there was no way I could resist reading his new stand alone novel. Glad to report that it certainly didn’t disappoint.
Kassie is a young and vulnerable teen who has an unfortunate gift that runs in the family of being able to see how and when people are going to die. Imagine the people you love, friends and family, and knowing something like that. It is definitely more a curse than a gift that’s for sure.
Adam pretty much has it all. Even though his job is demanding, he has a wife and a baby on the way and life is definitely looking good. Meeting Kassie makes him question his own beliefs being a forensic psychologist and he is definitely out of his comfort zone when it comes to her.
The killer in this novel is a very sick and twisted one. The killings will without a doubt make you cringe but had me enthralled never the less. With a male and female protagonist and a female detective running the case, this really does make for a compulsive read. There are a great mix of characters that really add to the appeal of the story also.
A Gift For Dying shows off the authors writing skills even more. It is guaranteed to win over new fans as well as old and I hope that he has plenty more stand alone’s in the pipe line after this one. A dark, twisted and gripping read. Loved it!
My thanks to Tracy Fenton, NetGalley and Penguin UK – Michael Joseph for an advanced readers copy of this book. All opinions are my own and not biased in anyway.
I love the authors Helen Grace series so I was eager to read this stand-alone book, it certainly didn't disappoint, in fact, it was brilliant and exceeded my expectations. It is far from the usual serial killer plot, as a young girl sees the gruesome, torturous killings through the victim's eyes. She even tries to warn the victims but to no avail and she ends up becoming a suspect. The book is fast paced and once I started it I didn't want to put it down,
3.5 stars.
Not your bog standard serial killer book, when you throw in someone who can foresee your death when she looks into your eyes.
Add to that she is a teenager, and unreliable one at that with taking drugs, skipping school.
How our hero gets sucked into breaking into houses with her is a mystery... but glad he does, because there's a few "oh.. that's not what I expected" moments in this book. That's always a good thing.
Wow as always M J Arlidge delivers a totally captivating action packed story from start to finish!
Kassie is a great character, a young girl who can see people's murders before they happen but no one will believe her, as more people are murdered she puts herself right in the frame despite trying to help. Only her psychologist Adam and his wife are willing to help but at what cost to them!
The detectives are stumped as to how Kassie knows who the next victim is, will they believe her before it's too late
