A really good thriller which kept me gripped the whole way through. This is a really good story with an ending that I could not have guessed.
Thank you to Netgalley for my copy.
I found this a slow, rather plodding read, I’m afraid.
It’s a story of a best friend’s death and how the lead character deals with the loss whilst not believing the initial cause of suicide. Alongside this story runs the thread of a small holiday resort and the complexities of permanent residents versus holidaymakers who turn up, enjoy and go.
The writing is good and descriptive, it was just too descriptive with insufficient drama / pull for me. This meant that I read to get to the end, rather than being pulled along by a gripping tale.
Not a bad read then, just, not my cup of tea.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publishers for the opportunity to preview this book in exchange for my honest review.
I'm not usually a fan of thriller but this one was very good and I loved it.
I loved the mix of literary and mystery fiction, the well written characters and the description.
This book is a page turner I wasn't able to put down and I appreciated every page I read.
I look forward to reading other books by this author.
Highly recommended!
Many thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this ARC, all opinions are mine.
A thriller that had me totally gripped. It’s not often that a book makes me stay up late trying to finish it or wake up early so I can finish it off. Brilliant book.
I was excited to try a Megan Miranda's book since I had never read her before, but sadly this one didn't work for me at all.
The plot was way too slow moving for my taste. The last 20% was quite good, but the rest wasn't gripping enough. The writing style was also very descriptive: the author spent a lot of time creating the setting, but personally I like mysteries to be more fast paced and concise. However, this is only a personal preference so other readers might love it. I myself would have liked it in a different genre.
I also didn't really care for Avery or the other characters, although I liked the ambiguity surrounding the main character and how we gradually learnt more about her. But it wasn't enough to truly interest me.
Sadly, not a book for me, but not objectively bad. You should still give it a try if you are interested in it.
I’m a huge Megan Miranda fan since I read All The Missing Girls, when it comes to character driven psychological thrillers they are all top notch.
Same with The Last House Guest, a beautifully done drama with mystery undertones, a small community setting and a possibly unreliable narrator. Avery doesn’t believe her best friend killed herself, but just how close were they in reality?
With this author it’s all about the characters and Avery is an engaging and occasionally strange one to follow along with. The mystery element is beautifully intriguing, the relationships are complex and layered and the setting comes to life.
I’m never sure what the outcome will be when reading a Megan Miranda novel which gives an added edge to proceedings and overall I loved The Last House Guest for its underlying layers and sense of unpredictable foreshadowing.
Recommended.
Full of twists and turns for the reader with a few red herrings - that's what makes a great read in this genre. At times the pace slowed, but I didn't mind this too much.
The mystery is set around the death of a girl named Sadie, who was found underneath some cliffs and we follow the events around this. The inhabitants of the town of Littleport, where the story is centred, are all mysterious and we get a good glimpse into what makes them tick; the central, focal character of Avery has enough depth to keep interest and drive the story forward There's great push in the writing towards the end, which keeps you hooked in and the conclusion/epilogue works well..
I would certainly recommend this book to others. Many thanks for the review copy!
Thanks to NetGalley and publishers for the ARC.
I loved reading this book. So well-written, lots of atmosphere and great characters.
Littleport, Maine, nestled between mountains and ocean, is a Summer vacation retreat. Most of the properties let out are owned by Grant Loman who, with his wife, son Parker and daughter Sadie, spend Summers at their mansion overlooking the ocean. Avery Greer was orphaned when she was 14, her parents died in a car crash on a mountain road, but her grandmother survived the crash. Following her grandmother's death her house was bought by Grant Loman to add to his portfolio. Avery was given the Loman's guest house to live in and trained-up to become Grant's property manager. Sadie and Avery become inseparable friends. Each year at the end of the Summer a Plus-One Party is organised in one of the rental properties before Littleport heads into the Winter months. The Summer 2017 party is where Sadie is found dead beneath the cliff. Believed to be a suicide, Avery cannot reconcile herself to it knowing Sadie as she did, and gradually teases out a variety of truths and lies which all seem to conspire to make herself look guilty of hurting Sadie.
There are lots of twists to navigate, red-herrings that keep the reader guessing, and mostly wrongly, until very near the end.
Excellent conclusion and a very satisfying epilogue.
I thoroughly enjoyed this it was a gripping read. A bit of a slow burner at places but really well written. I’d recommend this book.
Thanks Netgalley and the Publisher. I have read a few books by this author and have always enjoyed them. This is well written but sort of ok read
Littleport is fictional. I checked. I mean I would be very afraid to go there if it had been real! ha! Blimey there are some strange people living here. EVERYONE has secrets to hide and don't even think about buying a house there if you're an outsider.
Megan writes some claustrophobic thrillers and this was twistly good. Very character driven and a study of people's motivations and habits, thoughts and inner thoughts. Very cleverly plotted with a slow build and a boom of an ending. You might guess the ending as the book goes on but this doesn't take away from the ending and the sense of a mic dropping..
A great read. No locations to booktrail but just as well as you tried to go here, the characters wouldn't let you anywhere near haha
Fantastic thriller that had me gripped from start to finish. I’m adding Megan Miranda to my list of authors to look out for.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publishers for the ARC in return for an honest and unbiased opinion.
Megan Miranda has done it again, another great thriller!
I was utterly gripped throughout parts of this story and whilst it is fairly slow paced, everything progressed well and didn't feel rushed.
Whilst the ending wasn't totally unpredictable it worked well with the story and i was pleased with how everything turned out.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book, which kept me gripped all the way through. Megan Miranda writes beautifully, creating a strong sense of the febrile atmosphere of Littleport, a place where everyone has secrets. Avery is a flawed but thoroughly sympathetic lead character, and the narrative allows the reader to uncover the secrets behind her friend's death one by one alongside her. A wonderful combination of literary writing and gripping murder mystery that I would highly recommend. (And I took considerable satisfaction from the epilogue!)
Megan Miranda always knows how to deliver with a good book.
This one is a slow burn, but satisfying none the less.
Avery is a very interesting character, she almost seems to have no personality of her own and molds herself to suit those around her.
But then when you go deeper in the book, you find out there is more to her than meets the eye. I really enjoyed reading this story, and I look forward to the next one.
