I wanted to like this book as it sounded good but I couldn't get into it. I would have not reviewed but NetGalley insists on a review to keep your profile rating up even when you say you are declining to read it.
Due to a sudden, unexpected passing in the family a few years ago and another more recently and my subsequent (mental) health issues stemming from that, I was unable to download this book in time to review it before it was archived as I did not visit this site for several years after the bereavements. This meant I didn't read or venture onto netgalley for years as not only did it remind me of that person as they shared my passion for reading, but I also struggled to maintain interest in anything due to overwhelming depression. I was therefore unable to download this title in time and so I couldn't give a review as it wasn't successfully acquired before it was archived. The second issue that has happened with some of my other books is that I had them downloaded to one particular device and said device is now defunct, so I have no access to those books anymore, sadly.
This means I can't leave an accurate reflection of my feelings towards the book as I am unable to read it now and so I am leaving a message of explanation instead. I am now back to reading and reviewing full time as once considerable time had passed I have found that books have been helping me significantly in terms of my mindset and mental health - this was after having no interest in anything for quite a number of years after the passings. Anything requested and approved will be read and a review written and posted to Amazon (where I am a Hall of Famer & Top Reviewer), Goodreads (where I have several thousand friends and the same amount who follow my reviews) and Waterstones (or Barnes & Noble if the publisher is American based). Thank you for the opportunity and apologies for the inconvenience.
‘If you read this then I am dead’ are the words that Rose reads in a journal she found after being knocked over by a man fleeing down the street. Despite the fact Rose’s own life is at breaking point, her marriage is at an end and her daughter won’t even speak to her, she decides she must find the owner of the journal and save him. With the police ignoring her, her family rejecting her,Rose is determined to do what she can. Even if it means she will put herself in danger. Whilst dealing with her own personal tragedy and coping with crippling insomnia, Rose takes her life in her hands to stand up for injustice and discrimination.
Jack Jordan has written with honesty and compassion sharing Roses’s fears of those who should be there to help, but are actually the true perpetrators. This emotionally charged and heart wrenching thriller is an incredible read that shows the incredible talent of this writer.
Unfortunately, I have not been able to read and review this book.
After losing and replacing my broken Kindle and getting a new phone I was unable to download the title again for review as it was no longer available on Netgalley.
I’m really sorry about this and hope that it won’t affect you allowing me to read and review your titles in the future.
Thank you so much for giving me this opportunity.
Natalie.
Thanks to Readers First and Atlantic for the copy of this book to read and review. This is one of them books you can’t put down! I had to know what happened, Jordan kept you guessing right until the end. This story is about Rose Shaw. She has been though horrendous tragedy in her life and her family hate her. She also suffers terribly with insomnia. One evening she collides with a man running through the street that drops a journal. The journal is written by the missing Finn Matthews. Rose dedicates her sleepless nights trying to solve the case. What happened to Finn? The police won’t investigate and why is Finn so sure someone is trying to kill him? Rose is determined to uncover the truth, but she has no idea how much it’ll cost her! Jordan has written this so well! Everything ties in together perfectly. I loved how Jordan talked about Roses insomnia, it was so interesting to read about, I was naive as to how much it affects people. The main character Rose was very likeable. I absolutely loved this story!
Night by Night is the latest novel by author Jack Jordan and I am thrilled to have been invited on to the blog tour for this one. I remember saying when I first read Anything for Her that I said that Jack Jordan was an author to watch. He is now going from strength to strength and Night by Night is his best book yet.
With Jack Jordan has managed to create an emotive read with highly developed characters that was just simply heart breaking. Rose is the perfect narrator for this story. The first few chapters really set the scene.
This story follows what happens after Rose has the encounter with Finn and finds the journal. In a search for the truth when people don't necessarily want her too. Twists and turns and the authors trademark suspense made the pages turn incredibly quickly.
I think that this is the authors most accomplished novel to date. I felt so many emotions whilst reading and I found the authors passion for the written word was all over every page.
Full of suspense and drama, I was absolutely hooked.
Really enjoyed this! It was so tense in some places that it quite literally forced you to read another chapter. I have a tendency to spoil these books for myself by guessing what’s going to happen early on, but I didn’t on this occasion which’s clearly the sign of a good book! The main felt both annoyance at the main character and sympathy; I couldn’t actually make my mind up about her. But I do admire her strength and in the end she was a great female lead. Looking forward to reading another book by Jack Jordan,
After a bit of a slow start, I was completely gripped by this book. I couldn't put it down! I hoped for a miracle happy ending for Finn and was constantly second-guessing the potential perpetrator. I didn't expect the real culprit. Looking forward to reading more from the author soon!
This is yet another fantastic book by Jack Jordan! He is definitely one of my favourite authors - he manages to come up with such original plot lines for thrillers and this also included a very topical theme on how gay people are treated by the police. This really was a fantastic read and I 100 % recommend it.
Jack Jordan is a new-to-me author and I was extremely excited to read Night by Night as the plot looked fantastic. This book was a slow burner for me as it took me some time to become engrossed in the story but once I was on board it was a thrilling, roller-coaster read.
I felt so much emotion for Rose ( the main character) and the tribulations that life had thrown her way were unimaginable. Rose was unreliable and a really complicated character who underwent something of a transformation as the story-line developed, travelling a journey I loved being on with her. I had a lot of empathy for her and the horror of her situation, though she was somewhat controversial. Her grief and the impact it had on all those around her was beautifully explored.
This was a solid novel that delivered all the way through. I was enraptured by the plot and the story and really wanted to see what happened. With plenty of twists and turns, this was a great standalone novel and it delivered with no prior knowledge of characters' histories. The ending was fantastic and full of twisted suspense.
I haven’t read any of Jack Jordan's work before but I will definitely be hunting down his back catalogue from here.
I received a complimentary digital copy of this novel, at my own request, from Atlantic Books/ Corvus via NetGalley. This review is my own unbiased opinion. Thank you also to Jack Jordan and Pigeonhole for giving me the opportunity to read this book!
What happens when you cannot sleep when you are tormented by insomnia read the book and see how our character gets by. The loss of a child drives Rose to this nightly despair. It ultimately leads her to help another tormented soul seeking redemption. A stranger reaches out through his words, words that she follows to their conclusion. To find the help he was looking for and the peace she craves. Bloody brilliant writing in my mind. A clever plot backed up by tight, gripping and a relentless pace. It delivers a rollercoaster cant put down thriller.
It’s been ages since I’ve finished a book and reviewed it on the same day, but here we are!
Night by Night has been on my TBR for a while (too long really!) so I picked it up yesterday just to get it started. And here we are 24 hours later and I’m done.
I’ve read and loved all of Jack’s books up to now, and Night By Night is definitely another excellent read. It was really compelling and I just couldn’t stop reading it once I started.
Rose is an insomniac, and it’s essentially ruining her life. When we meet her, she is on the edge. Exhausted, paranoid, emotional, everything that goes hand in hand with being barely able to function with no sleep. And when she experiences a tragic event, everything she has known is thrown into chaos.
Fast forward a few years and she is a shell of her former self. When she collides with a man on the street, who promptly disappears, she becomes embroiled in a situation that becomes increasingly dangerous for her and those around her.
Night By Night actually broke my heart, repeatedly. It is a highly emotive book and the narrative is very taut throughout. There is an underlying tension woven through the book, and it doesn’t let up.
Even though the subject matter is really tough, and it made me quite sad, Night by Night is a really great book. Emotionally charged, disturbingly relevant and delivered with honesty, Night by Night is Jack’s best book yet in my opinion
Highly recommended!
This is the first Jack Jordan book I have read and was blown away by his writing! I knew this was a thriller but I didn't expect to have my heart broken along the way by the characters too. Found it such an emotional read and one that I couldn't put down. will defiantly be reading more from this author.
I'm so sorry. I've been struggling to read this book since I DLed it and honestly, I can't finish it. I'm still only about 1/4 of the way through if that. I just cannot relate to the protagonist at all. I find her so guilt-ridden and self-effacing and generally annoying personality so overwhelming that I don't care what happens to her. I thought that at the point of the car accident when she said what she did about the one rescued, that would be a turning point, but, no. I'll just have to let this one slip through the cracks.
I’m a huge fan of Jack Jordan’s books and couldn’t wait to read Night by Night. I was shook from the very start as the main character Rose who has suffered with insomnia since the birth of her twin daughters is involved in a tragic accident. I have recurring nightmares about driving/being driven off a bridge into water so to then read this (and have two daughters myself) really got me, I think I held my breath for the duration. Obviously I had the nightmare after reading so I reckon Jack owes me some therapy!
This tragedy rips the family apart and Rose is left drifting through her life; estranged from her husband and despised by her remaining daughter. She is an outsider and feeling ostracised when one evening she is knocked to the ground by a stranger who drops a journal. Within the pages are notes from local man Finn Matthews diarising his escalating abuse at the hands of a rejected male admirer and his struggle to be taken seriously by the local police. With this journal Rose finds purpose for the first time in years, the plight of this young man and attitudes towards his sexuality mirrors the struggles her brother Jay endured in his short life. Rose was unable to save her brother and is determined to make a difference this time. Her interest in the journal leads to the discovery of underlying homophobia in the police and her claims are not taken seriously. Further investigation on her part lead to the discovery that there have been other local gay men that have gone missing or their deaths ruled as suicide and someone does not want Rose to get to the heart of the mystery…
This is a tense and fast paced thriller and one that elicited a surprise emotional response from myself; a few days after finishing I was randomly thinking about Finn and the other missing men and suddenly burst into tears! This is a first for me, I’m not a massive crier when reading so for a book to hit me that hard days later is testament to the power of Jack Jordan’s writing. The knowledge that this book is inspired by Stephen Port who murdered at least four gay men in 2014-15 and the failings of the police in the investigation hit me even harder and I could not stop thinking about the victims.
Another five star book from Jack Jordan and I predict big things in the future for this author.
Rose is suffering with insomnia that impacts on the life of her husband, Christian, and their twin daughters, Lily and Violet. A terrible accident devastates the family and Rose struggles through the insomnia until one night she discovers a journal that starts , ‘If you’re reading this I’m already dead.’ Rose is determined to find out what happened to the young man that wrote it.
Crikey what a whirlwind of a read this is! I was hooked from the first chapter and devoured it! Fabulous work Jack! Thank you to netgalley and the publishers for this arc in exchange for my honest review.
I've read every book that Jack Jordan has published and the talent of this outstanding young author continues to amaze me. You know you're guaranteed a good read when you pick up a Jack Jordan novel and wow does he pull out all of the stops in Night by Night, his fifth book. I was almost hyperventilating in shock after a huge gasp out loud moment in the opening chapters, in a part named 'Before'; so be prepared and buckle up for this thrilling literary rollercoaster ride!
You would have to be completely heartless not to feel for Rose Shaw; she has such an emotional and heartbreaking back story with so much tragedy in her life and the punches just keep on coming. When Rose finds a journal in the street one night, she is determined to find out what happened to its owner, but someone is equally determined to stop her. As she continues to dig into the disappearance of Finn Matthews, it feels like Rose is very much alone, losing friends and family at every turn and even the police don't believe her.
I loved Rose's dogged determination to get to the bottom of the disappearances of young men in her area over several years. When Rose puts an advert in the newspaper, a string of families come forward who have lost loved ones; vulnerable young men who are just trying to live the life they have chosen. Someone is preying on these men and the local police force, filled with bigots and homophobes, won't take their disappearances seriously.
It's scary to see how people's prejudices affect their work ethic; I know this is fiction but I bet it does happen in real life. It shouldn't matter what age, sex or sexual preference a person has but oftentimes it's the only thing that some narrow minded people see. It's very brave of Jack Jordan to put this subject out there and it pains me to think of the suffering that many people will have encountered over the years. I was particularly moved by Jay's story and how he was crying for help inside but couldn't voice it to those who cared most about him.
Jack Jordan remains firmly one of my favourite authors and I'm always on tenterhooks when he releases a new book. Night by Night is an outstanding psychological thriller that succeeded in shocking and gripping me but it was also very thought-provoking as it highlighted the emotional torture that people hide so very well. Although it's a thriller not a self-help book, if it makes just one tortured soul ask for help as a result of reading it, then it's a job well done.
I chose to read an ARC and this is my honest and unbiased opinion.
This is the first book I have read by Jack Jordan and I’m certain it won’t be the last. If I have a bad nights sleep, I struggle throughout the day. I can’t imagine what it is like to have insomnia. Or how to cope with what happened to her family because of it. It was a book that had me feeling tense but not for the reasons I expected. The crimes committed were horrific, even though there wasn’t much detail about the killing, it is more about what each of the victims experienced in the events leading up to their deaths. The main reason I felt so tense was because of the level of hatred throughout. Not only towards Finn and the others but also towards Rose. I found it very difficult to understand why nobody had any sympathy for what happened to her.
Most of the novel focuses on Rose but there are also small parts that concerns others. Finn is the most common one, as the notes from his journal were revealed. But the others are as disturbing, one of them towards the end is more upsetting that the others.
I have never read anything like this book before. The level of hatred towards most of the characters is at times draining but equally fascinating. It is also sadly, believable with the society that we live in. It is at times, emotional, reading about Rose’s life. she has nobody who she can turn to, everybody in the town knew what happened to her and she was increasingly isolated and mistrusted, especially by her own family.
An intriguing and heartbreaking novel that is different to most books I have read recently.
I have read and loved Jack Jordan's previous books so was looking forward to this one. Sadly I struggled with it. Reading the other reviews it seems I am in the minority though
Jack Jordan is back with a fantastic read with Night by Night.
Rose is struggling. Her life has changed and not for the better. Struggling to sleep she finds herself walking the streets. On one such occasion a man running collides with her. Unbeknown to him he dropped a book which Rose picked up. When she gets home curiosity gets the better of her and she opens the book.
It’s a journal that starts with....
If you’re reading this, I’m dead’.
Who is Finn Matthews?
Rose can’t forget him and tries to find him even though everyone advises her to stop searching.
This is a gripping and twisted read that will stay with me for a long time.
Sitting on the edge of my seat, holding my breath. Yep Jack pulled me through the wringer reading this. I’m so looking forward to reading more from this author.
