I haven't really been a great reader of "self help" books as I have always preferred fiction, but a few people have recommended some books to me that they have found very beneficial to them so I thought I would dip my toe into the self help water.
Unfortunately, I don't necessarily think this book was a good one for me. It is clearly very well researched (and that does mean a lot to me as a scientist) but there seemed to be a lot of book for no new information - namely that we experience a lot of stress in our lives and we need to do something to get rid of the stress even if we can't immediately get rid of the reason behind it. The recommendation appears to be to do some exercise or at least give yourself permission for a bit of down time.
As a regular runner, swimmer and reader this is not really news to me, nor is it something that I need to read a book about to know that it's true. More importantly, I don't think many other people are likely not to already know it themselves. I suppose it does give one the tools to justify having a few minutes to ourselves but frankly, I needed the time I spent reading the book about it to have the time to do a destress!
All in all, there isn't anything at all new in here that you won't already know - but you might enjoy looking at some of the reasoning behind it all.
This was super-quick to read (ideal for someone suffering with 'burnout', with concepts explained clearly. I didn't like the reliance on Disney films to explain concepts but figured that some people might - just my opinion! The sections were all clear and I liked the idea of the reader filling in sections of the book themselves.
Absolutely brilliant. I’ve never read a “self help” book but I have been going through a difficult period at work so requested this as I was feeling particularly burnt out!
I have already recommended it to several of the ladies in my life... colleagues, friends and family.
Stress really really affects me physically and I’ve been trying (mostly unsuccessfully!) to put a stop to it. This book was an easy to read guide to why women feel ‘burnout’ differently to men and things we can do to help. Whilst not everything is relevant for everyone, if you suffer with high stress, this book is a great start in tackling that!
I enjoyed this book. I thought that Emily and Amelia Nagoski approached the topic area in a really useful way. The book is full of handy suggestions of how women can deal with Burnout.
A good book but not one that resonated greatly for me at the stage I am currently at in my life. I prefer a less cutesy delivery method in general but I can see it being accessible to other people. This isn't to say I haven't been in a burnout stress situation and maybe this would have been of more use to me at that time? Either way, I would recommend it to others experiencing high stress because learning to break the physical cycle of stress alone is really important.
