An enjoyable, witty story. The story follows Luca and her old Uni pals that she shared a house with. They meet up after 10 years , when one of the group gets married. The story dips between the now and ten years ago. Its great how the story unfolds.
I really enjoyed this riotous tale full of characters that met at uni and reverted to their former selves when meeting up again at the wedding of one of the gang!
Some fun-filled moments, some cringeworthy episodes (“It’s Al, not Alan!”) and some so far-fetched that they could have been taken straight from the Brudenells/Chestnut Avenue parties that I frequented back in the day!
I raced through this book - both the fun and the sad - and have been left a little bereft now the wedding is over. A really enjoyable read 4*
Overall I liked this book. I enjoyed the romance element, and I thought Portia wrote this very well. There was humour, poignancy ... I did wonder why the main character had what I think of as a man's name (something one of the other character's observed) Luca's an odd choice. Anyway, I liked the characters overall. Luca was eminently sensible and came across well. Her old uni friends were a good bunch too - although I did wonder about Clarky's inclusion. Was he needed? And the only other question mark I had was the whole plot covering the course of just one day, with an epilogue moving things along. Not a criticism, just an observation. It's a good read and one that held my interest throughout. Thanks NetGalley!
The story of Luca and her university friends, told in present day and also when they were all sharing a house at university.
Will she get together with Tom now or has their chance been and gone?
Luca is 31, single, and for the most part, happy. When she has to attend the wedding of one of her University friends, she begins to question her life and how it measures up to everyone else - they all seem to be getting married and having babies, but she still lives in the same town she grew up in, and she is nowhere near marriage or children. At the wedding, the group of Uni friends talk about things they've all been keeping to themselves for the past decade, and the reappearance of the man who broke Luca's heart wasn't something she had planned for.
This was very sweet, it was witty, sharp and funny - the group dynamic reminded me very much of the gang of friends in Love, Actually. Everyone had a different personality and there were plenty of laugh-out-loud moments. This is my first time reading anything by this author and it definitely won't be my last, it was the perfect book to curl up with as the wind howled outside.
