I couldn’t get into this story. I normally like Baldacci’s stories. NetGalley insists I have to leave a review and rating to keep my rating up.

As always a riveting read

This is the fifth book in the series and whilst I would recommend reading the previous books it can be read as a standalone

FBI Consultant Amos Decker has returned to Burlington , four years after the murder of his young daughter , his wife and brother in law - his mind in turmoil for it would have been his daughters fourteenth birthday.
He is tracked down by a man hard to forget , Hawkins - his first homicide arrest , who has been released from prison due to ill health . Could Hawkins really be innocent as he claims , has he helped convict the wrong
man ?
Deciding to re-investigate the original case he is shocked to realise that Hawkins has been murdered - using his perfect recall (due to an old injury) he starts at the beginning - where will it all end .?
Can he now live in the future or will the past always hold him back ?

Redemption is a great read which I have no hesitation in recommending - a plot with many surprise , twists and turns at every corner .

i was given an arc of the book by the Publisher and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review

This is the fifth book in the Amos Decker series and another killer read. I love the series! The book was well written, gripping from beginning to end and I can't wait to see what happens in the next book!

Redemption by David Baldacci is a very accomplished thriller. The plot is complex and the characters varied and realistic. There were tense moments and shocks aplenty. My only negative is that I was a wee bit bored from time to time, particularly with the unending questioning of the various suspects. However, I appreciated the detail of this and it was no doubt essential to the story.

Another brilliant book by David Baldacci, I would suggest that you start with the first in the series, but you don't need to. I love all the characters in the book and the fact that they are all so interesting. I had to read the previous book prior to reading this, so it took me a bit longer to get to. Well worth the read, as always.

Amos Decker, a cop who also done some work with the FBI, is visiting his home town of Burlington, Ohio on his daughter’s birthday. Well, more accurately it’s his late daughter as she and her mother, Decker’s beloved wife, were brutally murdered some while ago. As he sits by the grave he’s visited by a man he thought he’d never see again. Meryl Hawkins was the subject of Decker’s first murder investigation as a police officer and he was subsequently sent down for life, for the murder of four people. But it seems that Hawkins has been released early suffering from terminal cancer. In a brief conversation with Decker he claims his innocence, stating that the cops got it wrong – big time. Amos is not someone to leave loose end so he seeks out his ex-partner with a view to walking through the Hawkins case again. He doesn’t think they got it wrong as the evidence seemed irrevocable, but he wants to set his mind to rest. But events soon mean that he’s drawn into reviewing the case from top to bottom – could it be that somehow they missed something or were misled?

This is the fifth book in the series and it’s clear that a late joiner (I’ve not yet read the earlier books) I’ve missed out on quite a bit of relevant history. And although this book can certainly be read as a standalone it’s worth noting that there are quite a few references to acts and people previously featured in the series. I was definitely left with the impression that I’d have been better off reading these books in order. That said, other than the tragedy impacting his family the only other key piece of information to know about our front man is that he suffers from a condition called hyperthymesia, which means that all his memories are permanently stored in his brain. The condition, brought on by a severe blow to his head, is both a blessing and a curse: his powers of recall are faultless, so that once he’s seen something he can pull up the memory and pick out as much detail as he wishes, but the downside is that he’s also permanently haunted by visions of the bad events in his life.

I liked both Decker and his ex-partner, they’re presented as believable and interesting characters trying to do the right thing whilst also attempting to address significant challenges in their own lives. The the most part this book worked really well, with the re-investigation being broken down into reasonable steps and relevant challenges being made to actions previously taken. However, I do have a couple of bones to pick with it. Firstly, I had some issues with a few of the minor characters: there’s the slightly less able cop that had seen his career pushed aside by the more gifted Decker and the boss cop who clearly, for reasons unspecified here, had the severe hump with our hero – neither convinced me. The same went for a couple of the other characters. Secondly, there’s the ‘big’ ending in which all becomes clear, a scene that to me simply felt overplayed and totally implausible.

That said, it’s a fun read and as I’ve already got episode four ready to roll as an audiobook I’ll certainly give this series another try; it’s a decent concept and in Decker I think Baldacci has created a fictional character with some depth.

#Redemption #NetGalley David Baldacci books never disappoint and this one is no exception. Although 5th in the Amos Decker series, it is perfectly capable of being read as a stand alone. Filled with action from the first page I love the style of David Baldacci who tells the story mainly through dialogue instead of pages of descriptive writing which can easily bore me! So much going on in this book that kept my interest level right to the end. I love the character of Amos Decker and look forward to reading more of his adventures in the future. Another 5 star cracker!

Amos Decker is back with a bang in the fifth instalment of the series in which Mr Baldacci shows his page-turning prowess with this deliciously addictive delicacy. It's a complex, beautifully constructed suspense fest and the tension is palpable throughout. Everything just works so superbly and because of that I fell hook, line and sinker very early on. Baldacci has that uncanny knack of knowing exactly what his readers want and provides it to them in spades.

Decker is a fascinating creation but with all the usual, somewhat predictable baggage. The past regularly comes back to haunt him occupying and taking over his mind and taking him out of the present meaning he is less investigatively intuitive. I admire him as he is astute and compassionate and hope he evolves as a person to get back on top of his mental health in future books. Redemption is gripping entertainment with a twisted narrative, plenty of action, a diverse cast and perfect pacing.

Once again Baldacci has consistently shown himself to be at the top of his game, so anyone out there who enjoys masterfully crafted thrillers owes it to themselves to grab a copy.

Many thanks to Macmillan for an ARC.

I would like to thank Netgalley and Pan Macmillan for an advance copy of Redemption, the fifth novel to feature FBI consultant Amos Decker.

Decker is back in Burlington visiting the graves of his murdered wife and daughter when he is approached by Meryl Hawkins, the first man he charged with murder thirteen years previously. Hawkins is dying and wants Decker to prove his innocence but he is killed before he can talk to Decker seriously, making Decker think there was maybe more to the case than his rookie self saw.

Wow! What a read. I thoroughly enjoyed Redemption which is an engrossing thriller with plenty of twists and turns and a very modern theme albeit with an old fashioned execution. It has been a while since I spent time with Decker having not yet got round to books three and four so I had forgotten what I was missing.

The novel is told fully from the law enforcement perspective, mostly Decker, so the reader has no idea of what is behind either the thirteen year old spree or the current one (Meryl Hawkins is only the first victim). This is my favourite approach as it allows the reader to identify with Decker and get invested in his investigation while leaving plenty of room for speculation and encouraging the reader to read on to satisfy their curiosity. I was hooked from the initial meeting and couldn’t put the novel down from there to the rather startling conclusion, startling because it’s silly but not quite beyond the realm of possibility. Hats off to Mr Baldacci’s imagination and also to his ingenuity in the way he resolves many puzzles throughout the novel. I also think it is worth mentioning the writing style which is very welcoming and instantly makes the reader feel comfortable and at home in his story. It is a well plotted thriller with plenty of excitement, action and mysteries and is great entertainment.

Amos Decker is a nice man with much sorrow in his past due to the murder of his family and some strange brain conditions due to a football collision when he was young. Without getting technical he has a perfect memory for everything and sees auras of colour round anyone he meets. The former comes in handy with his work and the latter, thankfully, doesn’t get much of a mention, thankfully as it would clutter up the narrative. It would appear that Decker is changing, a fact noted frequently in the novel, becoming more sensitive and tactile. It will be interesting to see how this plays out, if it is the first steps to shrugging off the guilt of not being there for his family and starting to live in the present.

Redemption is a good read which I have no hesitation in recommending.

David Baldacci's 5th in the Amos Decker series is a brilliant and compulsive thriller with Decker back home in Burlington, Ohio, where his wife, Cassie, daughter, Molly and brother in law, Johnny, died. He is there to commemorate what would have Molly's 14th birthday. This tragedy has driven Decker's fierce and implacable obsession to fight for justice. After earlier brain injuries, he has been gifted and cursed by hyperthesmia, which means he can forget nothing and synesthesia. At Molly's grave, a man meets him that he doesn't recognise but he knows his name, Meryl Hawkins, now released from prison and dying of cancer. Decker had led the investigation that convicted Hawkins of the murder of Don Richards and his 2 children and David Katz, who had dropped in to see Don. It was Decker's first murder investigation and the evidence against Hawkins appeared ironclad, but Hawkins proclaims his innocence, asking him to look again at the murders. Decker's original cop partner and friend, Mary Lancaster also has doubts about the original conviction.

Decker cannot bear living with the possibility that he helped to destroy the life of an innocent man, as he commits to reworking this cold case. Indications that he is on the right path begin with the stone cold murder of Hawkins. Attempts are made on Decker's life, and in a blood drenched case, every lead he has ends up dying as the bodies start piling up. As Mary is forced to recuse herself when her husband, Earl, turns out to be the alibi of a possible suspect, Blake Natty is appointed to lead the case from the police end, and he and his superior, Pete Childress, are determined that Decker takes no further part in the case and leaves Ohio. Decker is having none of this, relentless in his pursuit of the truth. He is joined and assisted by a familiar face and friend, Melvin Mars, a man who spent 20 years in prison and on death row in Texas, until Decker proved his innocence. Decker finds that old sins cast long shadows as he seeks redemption for his past errors as an inexperienced murder detective.

This is a fast paced, complex and compulsive thriller, well constructed, and packed with suspense and tension. Baldacci is an expert at drawing in the reader and keeping them hooked right up to the tense last pages of the novel. His protagonist, Decker, is an interesting and unusual character, trapped in past traumas with memories that will never fade away, he is slowly and surely being destroyed unless he can learn to shift direction and create stronger personal ties with his friends that roots him in the present rather than the past. This is a highly intense, thrilling and entertaining read with a diverse cast of characters, showcasing Baldacci's considerable skills in writing nail biting thrillers. Highly recommended. Many thanks to Pan Macmillan for an ARC.

Thanks to NetGalley for the chance to read this book prior to publication.
I have read all the Amos Decker books and always thought they were great however, I felt this one takes an age to get going ! The last third of the book is Decker at his great self but the early part of the novel actually had me falling asleep (more than once !). I am sure this is only a temporary glitch although I fear a long wait until Decker's next installment.

Firstly thank you to NetGalley and Pan Macmillan for the opportunity to read the latest David Baldacci.
Another excellent read from David Baldacci featuring, who has to be my favourite character, Amos Decker.
Decker returns to his old stomping ground of Burlington, Ohio .Whilst on a visit he comes across Meryl Hawkins the first person he jailed as a homicide detective. It is an absolute page turner, full of twists and it keeps you guessing til near the end. I would have no hesitation to recommend this book as Amos Decker is a wonderful character and I hope to read more books featuring him.

would like to thank netgalley and the publisher for letting me read this book...what a book

decker has put many a bad guy away but when one comes back to say that he is dying and that he was framed and innocent of the crime that he was found guilty for, and a man that decker actually put away for life, who then ends up murdered what is a guy to do...but go over the case and see if there are any flaws in the first case that decker actually investigated all those year ago....

and with his technique and fantastic memory decker finds flaws in the first ever investigation..and then more bodies turn up..and with a few shots taken at decker, its a race to find the culprits before more bodies stack up...

what a journey, and i have to say i am fast becoming a fan of decker and the authors work...this was an amazing storyline and so believable...

will be keeping an eye out for more from this series and author

Amos Decker has a problem - he never forgets anything he sees be it good or bad and as a cop and FBI consultant the bad outweighs the good pretty much on a daily basis.

David Baldacci is fast becoming one of my favourite authors and although I am a little late to the party that just means I have a lot of excellent books to discover.

Redemption is the fifth in the Amos Decker series but the first I have read. The author very cleverly describes his hero's past in detail without giving anything away. I now know what happened to his family, at the local high school, and to his friend Melvin but nothing is spoilt as the reasons and culprits are not revealed.

What is explained is how, in his first game for the Cleveland Browns, Decker is injured causing the memory changes which have plagued his life and career ever since. Initially in Redemption they are a help when the man who has the dubious honour of being his first homicide arrest confronts him insisting he is innocent.

The resulting investigation is far more complicated than Amos could have ever imagined and he lurches from body to body as every lead stalls until he finally begins to get a glimmer of an idea of what had to have happened.

This was an exciting, first class read, not diminished in the least by my not having read the first four books. It is a multi-layered case put into a story which never lets up on pace but is always clear and concise.  I was never once confused or having to check back into previous chapters for clarification and thoroughly enjoyed every word.

I was able to read an advanced copy of this book thanks to Netgalley and the publishers and would recommend it highly. I will read the previous books but because I want to, not because I have to in order to understand this one.

David Baldacci always writes compelling thrillers and Redemption is no exception. It features Amos Decker, the Ex cop and FBI consultant who has a prodigious memory which he uses to solve crimes..
In this novel he returns to his hometown to visit the graves of his wife and daughter and whilst there he is accosted by a man who claims he was wrongly jailed by Decker 14 years earlier. He wants Decker to prove his innocence in the murder of 4 people. Despite the fact he has been released early due to a terminal illness.
This was Decker’s first homicide case and he remembers it well as it seemed a cut and dried case due to the overwhelming forensic evidence. However he is intrigued by Meryl Hawkin’s claim of innocence and decides to investigate. Unfortunately, before the investigation begins, Hawkins is murdered and Decker thinks there is definitely a cause for concern.
This is an enjoyable thriller with many twists. I certainly didn’t guess how the plot would pan out and I have read many books of this genre.
I liked the relationship between Decker and his old partner, Mary Lancaster, who helps him with the investigation. Despite Decker’s problems interacting with people due to his brain injury he really empathises with her and Is able to give her good advice as she is going through a tough time.
However he doesn’t pick up on his current partner, Alex’s feelings for him as he is so rooted in his past and the guilt he feels at the loss of his family.
This is part of a series and I would suggest reading the earlier books in order to get the most from this one as the character interaction is as much part of the book as the mystery element.
A great five star read and another winner from this author.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publishers for my arc in exchange for an honest review.

Interesting and complicated story, I had no idea who" dun " it or even what the actual underlying crime was. Great characters.
