This is the next installment of the Roy Grace series, and features all of your favourite supporting characters too. The story picks up quite soon after the last book, including the latest developments in cases like the Black Widow and super-villain Tooth.

Grace’s latest case involves ‘romance fraud’, when older people are scammed out of their savings by fraudsters pretending to be potential love interests. Although for us tech-savvy youngsters it seems like something we’d never fall for, for lonely older people it’s easy to understand how they could get pulled into a scam. That’s what comes across so well in the book, you get different angles on the story; from both the police and the victims of the crime. At times you really feel bad for the characters, they could easily be your aunt, uncle or grandparent.

Alongside the main case, we also find out what is happening in Roy Grace’s personal life, particularly revolving around his son Bruno and wife Cleo. The way that these stories are playing out slowly is both exciting and frustrating, I just want to know what happens! If you’ve read previous Grace novels, you’ll be rooting for a happy ending eventually for the family, but I’m just not convinced that it’s going to happen…..

Roy Grace novel I love these and it's been a long time since reading one. It's the story of Internet Scamming but on a global scale, and this time it's targeted at the widows/widowers, etc, who have lost loved ones, but still young enough to still have a life and somebody to share it with, and it's not just the easy ones that get caught it's the people who seem to have money a nice little nest egg ready to retire and to find someone to share.with.. When they think they have found the love of their lives all's well for a time and suddenly they need money for operation, or mother going in a home, and the classic, will be paid back with interest. Where do these scams start and from where does the money end up? Roy Grace was only investigating a suspicious suicide and then a phone call from a colleague in Munich, and Grace is not sure as there are a few more suicides what to believe and even the USA is not left out. It is quite a tale believable and delicately woven and is not a disappointing read to the avid reader I would like to thank Netgalley & Pan Macmillan for an advance copy of the book and this is my thoughts and review of the said book...

Another brilliant book in the Roy Grace series this time based on online romance fraud as I shall call it. It's a race against time to stop yet another case of fraud. It makes you think how people can be so trusting with people they've never met. No one is safe these days as your profile may be used in a romance fraud case and you wouldn't even realize it. Eye opener. Even recently it actually still happens. Looking forward to Grace's next case

The inimitable Peter James returns with Dead at First Sight, his best thriller to date, and the fifteenth instalment in the Roy Grace series, with a plot ripped from today's headlines it's a timely and very scary exploration of the type of scams that are been carried out on a daily basis by evil, manipulative fraudsters for monetary gain. This is three parts techno-thriller and one part traditional police procedural with the authorities beginning an investigation of the fraud and deception initially, which then looks into possible foul play been involved in certain highly suspicious deaths. It all makes for an utterly riveting and wholly absorbing read and once I had started I simply had to continue until I had finished it all and knew what had happened. It certainly didn't disappoint.

James provides so many twists in the tale that they were even capable of shocking me despite reading thrillers every day of the year. This was indeed refreshing. The author has clearly taken care to ensure the portrayal of both the police procedure and the way the romance scams operate was accurate; this added authenticity to it all. Spanning several continents these scammers have destroyed lives, now Superintendent Grace aims to give them a taste of their own medicine. No mercy.

The plot is complex and intricate, with non-stop action and murder 'n' mayhem aplenty. The last important ingredients of fast-pace and a cast of memorable characters and criminals are also fulfilled exceptionally. A five-star read—I 'd give it more if I could. Many thanks to Pan Macmillan for an ARC.

Another tale of murder and mayhem in Brighton with Superintendent Roy Grace and his crew on the case. As always a hugely entertaining read in this as ever topical series this time dealing with "romance' fraud ,the action ranging from Brighton to Germany and the USA . As usual home problems for Grace are cleverly interwoven into the narrative along with his relationship with ACC Caspian Pewe (fabulous name) all building to a surprise ending that indicates a new direction for the next episode!

I love this series. I have read them all and can definitely recommend them. This book is about internet fraud. It is fast paced and gripping from the start. It felt like catching up with old friends reading about Roy and Theo and Roy’s colleagues. This is a brilliant series and I hope there are many more to come.

Thank you to Netgalley for my copy.

This is the 15th book in the Roy Grace series and as with all those that have gone before it does not dissappoint. Another brilliant read!
Scamming of the lonely on a major scale is being carried out through internet dating sites. The victims are being relieved of large amounts of money and in some cases their lives.
Grace soon finds himself and his team investigating the deaths of two such women, who after becoming suspicious of their internet lovers started asking questions and ended up murdered.
At the same time 2 male victims, also making enquiries are determined to exact their revenge on the scammers.
This is a complex plot with continuous action, plenty characters and criminals to keep you interested. Especially when one of Grace`s old adversarys Tooth is thrown into the mix.
Cant wait to read the next book in the series.
Thanks to Netgalley and Pan Macmillan for the chance to read this as an ARC in return for my honest review.

Another brilliant book in the Roy Grace series.
I always know I’m in for a great read with Peter James and this book is no exception.
It comes to Roy’s attention that there is an on line dating scam taking place in the UK and also Munich. People are falling in love with someone on line and then being asked for money to help sick relatives, pay medical bills, etc
It’s such a sad story as these people are giving away their life savings and have nothing to show for it.
Soon two women are murdered as it seems they’ve started asking questions when asked for money, and Grace’s team are knee deep in the investigation.
As well as this Roy is having problems with Bruno and doesn’t know what to try next to help his son adapt to life with him and Cleo.
Tooth makes an appearance again and whilst he’s suffering with his health, he’s still determined to carry out his duties.
This is a great story that will have you on the edge of your seat in the final few chapters.
Thanks to Pan McMillan and NetGalley for the opportunity to read this book.

The Roy Grace series of books never disappoints. Based around the modern tale of internet dating and money scams, this book has plenty of characters and twists to keep interest. We have Roy's team not so much to the fore in this book and his estranged, creepy son Bruno still lingering around. I would have liked more focus on Roy, he is such a great character, but still a very good read which I would recommend. What does book 16 have in store for Roy? Thanks to Net Galley for my ARC. Another brilliant Roy Grace book from the incomparable Peter James. This series is so character rich that I enjoy them as much for the development of the police team as I do for the mystery/thrill. This latest book in the series involves internet dating scams which I’m sure will be a salutary lesson to most readers. I’m sure that the monetary figures quoted in the book are correct (good research always) so it is horrible how many vulnerable adults are being robbed. As always this is a tightly plotted, relevant book. Masterful

This was, as usual an excellent read by the great storyteller Peter James.

I did get a bit muddled with all the characters to start with and it was all a bit complex but I think that was because it’s a long time since I read any Roy Grace books and I need to refresh my memory. He also has a son, who’s been born since I last caught up with him!

However, this is a book mainly about the dangers of internet dating and not so much about Roy Grace.

My thanks to Netgalley and the publishers for the ARC

The annual appearance of Peter James' D S Roy Grace novel is one that I look forward to and Dead at First Sight didn't let me down.

All the old favourites are back as they try to deal with a team of Internet fraudsters.

The story moves along at a rapid pace that keeps you turning the pages and wanting to read just one more chapter!!

This series rarely disappoints and Dead at First Sight is thoroughly recommended

Dead at First Sight is the latest offering in the Roy Grace Series. I have read several others in the series and enjoyed them and this one doesn’t disappoint.
This latest offering sees Roy Grace investigating internet dating fraud. Where, men and women of a certain age are swindled out of their life savings never to be seen again. But a few them soon realise what’s going on and end up dead.
This is another great edition to the series. The quality of Peter James’ writing does not falter. It has an original plot, great characters and lots of twists and turns. It also made think about internet dating and how gullible people can be when looking for love. I also liked how it showed the softer side of Grace with his family life.
Thank you NetGalley and Pan Macmillan for a copy of this books

Another cracking read from this excellent author. I liked this book. The main theme is that of internet scamming, particularly fraudsters who prey on the lonely and vulnerable, who are genuinely looking for love and who can, in some instances, lose everything in their naivety. It's difficult to believe that people can be scammed in this way, especially when it's unlikely they will have met anyone face to face, however, this book really helps explain how this can happen and how it's about the manipulation of criminals, rather than the fault of the innocent.
The characters (as always in a Peter James book) are well rounded and interesting and it moves at a fair old pace.

As with most books in this series, they stand alone, although, I'd be surprised if reading this one didn't make you want to pick up others and I really enjoy the ongoing storyline of Roy's private life and particularly his challenging step son, who, I have to admit, I'm hoping comes to a sticky end!

Overall, a really good read. Thanks to Netgalley, the publishers and Peter James for the opportunity to preview in exchange for this honest review.

Solid 3.5 stars from me.

There are a lot of characters to try and remember in the first part of this story. There also isn't much interaction with Roy Grace's team members as there usually is. The book covers internet dating and how easy it is to scam lonley vunerable people. A woman has also been murdered in Munich and Roy is investigating a suspicious suicide in Brighton. The book focuses initially on the scamming, innocent victims handing over their savings to help out people they genuinely think that they are in love with, who they have never met, with the promise that they will get their money back - with intrest. Cassian Pewe as ever, is on Roy's back. They have a love to hate each other relationship. There is something a bit freaky about Bruno (Roy's eldest son to his first wife), I wish that we would find out what it is. There is also one of Roy's old nemesis back but I don't want to say which one. Another great addition to this series. This book could be read as a standalone but it's best to read this series from the beginning, if you haven't done so already.

I would like to thank NetGalley, Pan Macmillan and the author Peter James for my ARC in exchange for an honest review.

This is the 15th book in the Roy Grace series. It can be read as a stand-alone book but I truly think you need to read all of the series to really appreciate the in’s and out’s of Roy Grace’s life as well as his family and colleagues.

This latest instalment sees Roy and his team delving into the internet scamming originating from dating websites. As you will be aware nothing is ever quite that straight forward for Grace so expect some murders along the way, as well as the return of Tooth, a hitman that has some history with Grace and his team.

If you love Roy Grace and/or police procedural books you will thoroughly enjoy this. A great book with some great characters and plenty of criminals to keep you hooked. I look forward to reading the next book in the series to see where Roy will be next.

Thank you to Pan Macmillan and NetGalley for a digital copy of this book.

#DeadAtFirstSightRoyGrace15 #NetGalley Another brilliant chapter in the Roy Grace series. Peter James is certainly a master of his craft! Plenty of action and drama with a hidden twist here and there, you want to keep page turning until you reach the final conclusion. Sometimes, when you get to number 15 in a series, the writing can become a bit stale and 'samey' but not with Peter James - each book is as fresh and exciting as the first and I look forward to reading number 16 in this series!!

Thanks to Netgalley and Pan Macmillan for this ARC of Dead at First Sight. As soon as I was accepted for it it jumped straight to the top of my TBR list.
Number 15 in the series and it’s such a credit to Peter James that its as fresh a read as always and hasn’t in anyway gone stale as often long running series can. Interesting topical plot that, especially to us ladies of a certain age, makes you think “that wouldn’t happen to me”but a tiny voice behind says “ it just might”. Given the right set of circumstances we can all be vulnerable no matter how ‘switched on’ we might like to think we are. Great twists and turns and old villains reappear to spice things up. The subplot continues to develop and it’s like catching up with old friends but oh I do worry how Potting might fare in the next 6 months with Pewe!

This is book #15 of the Roy Grace series. Whilst it can be read as a standalone, it does make sense to read the books in the correct order to understand the back story of the characters.

I love this series, and have read every single book previous to this one! Roy Grace is a great character and it has been an interesting journey following his story over the last 14 books! In this instalment, Grace is called upon to look into the suicide of a woman in Brighton. There is something that doesn’t sit quite right with the suicide, and looking further into it, Grace and his team discover a link to internet dating scams where lonely widowers are scammed out of hundreds and thousands of pounds.

The book initially focusses on the stories of the scammed and the scammers, and we didn’t really see Roy properly until much further into the book. This was a shame for me as the best bits of the story are when Roy is doing what he does best – solving cases and arguing with his superiors! When the case of an apparent suicide comes in and Roy takes over the case, this is where the story really comes into its own and powers right through to the end of the book without coming up for air! Roy’s personal life also plays a big part in this book. I have to admit I really don’t like Bruno (am I bad for saying that about a child?) and it feels that something is going to happen with him in forthcoming books. I will be looking forward to seeing what this is!!

The internet dating scam story is fascinating and well researched. Whilst I’ve heard of these stories for many years, I still find it difficult to understand how people can be so gullible when it comes to handing over large sums of money! Perhaps I’m just naturally untrusting! Grace’s usual team are back to help him out, although I would like to have seen more of Branson and Potting as I love the relationship that they have with Grace. We do, unfortunately, also see the return of Grace’s superior, Cassian Pewe. Considering that Pewe has had it in for Grace over the last few books, I did love the conversation that Grace had with him towards the end of the story – no spoilers obviously, but it does make you wonder what is in store for Grace in the next book of the series!

All in all this was another great addition to the Roy Grace series. I do, however, wish it could go back to the early days of the series where the focus was more on the police work and banter between the team and Grace rather than on the back stories of some of the characters! It was still a very good read though that kept me turning the pages furiously to get to the conclusion. Roll on book #16!!

I would like to thank Netgalley and Pan Macmillan for an advance copy of Dead at First Sight, the fifteenth novel to feature Detective Superintendent Roy Grace of the Suffolk police.

A woman is murdered in Munich and Roy Grace is investigating a suspicious suicide in Brighton. At the same time a couple of men in different parts of the world are disappointed when their lovers don’t turn up. The link? The internet scamming of lonely people.

I thoroughly enjoyed Dead at First Sight which is a complicated tale of greed and financial ruin. The opening chapter describing Johnny Fordwater’s wait for his new love at the airport grabs the reader immediately as it turns from anticipation to disappointment. I was hooked and drawn in by the vivid, realistic description and after that the novel never lets go. It has multiple points of view and I initially found it difficult to keep track of all the characters but it all quickly makes sense as the narrative progresses and the characters slot into place. I found it to be a compulsive read.

The plot centres around these dating scams and while it would be easy to dismiss the victims as gullible fools Mr James presents a complex scenario of smart scammers preying on the loneliness and essential niceness of the targets. It’s a much more sophisticated operation than the well known Nigerian prince scams. The novel is both scary and informative in this respect.

Grace is suffering from a touch of burnout with having to deal with his boss, the odious, glory hunting Cassian Pew and the realities of modern day policing, but, despite this, he still runs an excellent investigation. I like the operational detail in these novels and the personality clashes which add realism to the narrative. I also like the way Mr James moves his characters on from novel to novel. There are more changes coming in Grace’s life, not least facing up to his son Bruno’s strange behaviour.

Dead at First Sight is a good read which I have no hesitation in recommending.
