This is a really cute second chance romance - very light-hearted and easy to read. Isabelle and Val were both very likeable characters, and it was nice to see the shock of their initial re-meeting develop into a steadier relationship. There wasn't as much meat to this second instalment of the series as there was in the first one, but I really enjoyed the fluffy, low-angst tone. A great comfort read.
wow! probably my favorite darcy burke story. it can be hard with pre-established relationships, but the characters had some great chemistry that i could see from there
Thank you NetGalley and publisher for an eARC in return for my honest review of One Night of Surrender.
This was an enjoyable read and full of excitement. The past relationship between Val and Isabelle is well developed making this book easy to stand alone in the series. I look forward to reading another novel by the author.
Valentine Fairfax, Duke of Eastleigh, crosses paths again with Isabelle Cortland and the past feelings become new again. Part of the Wicked Dukes Club series and good addition with the characters and story line. Looking forward to reading more in the series.
E book from netgalley and publishers with thanks. Opinions are entirely my own.
I thought book was going to be more enjoyable. at times it was interesting and then it dragged other times.i hope the rest of the series decides to pick up because so far 2 stars for book 1 and 2.
The heroine can't quite believe that the past is going to come back and bite her when she goes with the family for whom she is a governess to London. The family was meant to stay at a rented townhouse, but renovations will not to be finished for at least a fortnight. So Lord Barkley, her employer, asks his friend, the Duke of Eastleigh, for assistance. The duke will allow the family to stay in his townhouse with him for as long as they need. Unfortunately for the heroine, His Grace is one with whom she has had a one-night affair while they lived in Oxford when he was studying there. They had had a relationship for a while that was quite an intellectual one, but for one night, they allowed their passions to get the better of them. What will happen now when she is thrust into a situation with her old flame?
I basically enjoyed this story, but I felt the author did too much head hopping in each scene. I like how most modern writers keep to one perspective for a scene or at least clearly demarcate when perspective changes. These scenes were all over the map in terms of perspective, and it was sometimes hard to keep track of whose head you were in. I liked the story itself. I found the characters to be fascinating, although I wish I understood more about their earlier relationship. We only learned about that in little pieces here and there. Especially for the time, it is hard to imagine a young woman would give herself to a young man without the benefit of marriage. What made them act such when they were younger? They do have chemistry in the present. I thought that at times the heroine made bad decisions or had wrongheaded thoughts due to pride. All in all, I did enjoy the book despite the issues that I have mentioned.
This book was a cute love story between Val and Isabelle who met long ago while Val was still at university. Theirs was young love that seemed to blossom quickly before real life came crashing down on them. Ten years later, both widowed after bad marriages, they happen to meet and that is where the story begins. Isabelle tries to fight the attraction but its a love story ;)
I would recommend this book to anyone who like their historicals light and sweet. Also great for a quick read.
I received this book from Net Galley in exchange for an honest review.
Book two in the Wicked Dukes Club series. The series is written by two authors, Darcy Burke and Erica Ridley. In One Night of Surrender, two lost souls have once again found each other. The past has scared each of them in different ways, but each of them is willing to see what the future will bring. The story is enjoyable and a great read.
I received a free copy from netgalley in exchange for an honest review. I enjoyed one night of surrender. this was a relatively short novel and quick paced so that one did not get bored. I usually don't like the whole they together but couldn't be together and meet later in life trope but this story was good (although there isn't really an explanation of why they can't be together). 3.5 to 4 stars.
Can an affair of the past come back overwhelmingly and definitively?
It seems so, at least for Valentine and Isabelle.
They met at the time when Valentine, now the Duke of Eastleigh, was in Oxford. Isabelle was the daughter of one of the teachers, and although they had an irresistible attraction to each other, the romance had no future.
Ten years later, they meet again when Isabelle being the governess for his friend's daughters, it was inevitable that they would talk, and again the feeling comes strong.
But now, Isabelle was no longer that naive girl, and she had saved money to finance a school for impoverished girls.
Valentine was not planning on getting married again after his first marriage had been a disaster. However, Isabelle was in his life again, and he would not let her go.
This is Book 2 of The Wicked Dukes series, which is the name of the tavern that good friends own, and plan to never fall in love and marry, but... you know what happens...
5 stars
Quick read with decently established relationship between the two main characters. Writing style and characterization was enjoyable and lively.
With each book, this series only gets better. Erica Ridley could not have picked a better partner to write her Wicked Dukes series with. In the first few books, you can sense their different writing styles. However, by the end of the series the books seem seamless. They seem that they are written by the same person.
This book is about the Duke of Eastleigh. He was hurt by his first marriage. She was not a nice person and that left his heart scarred.
Isabelle Cortland is a governess and knows the Duke of Eastleigh. They met years ago when the Duke was attending a school where Isabelle's father was teaching.
Now they are thrown together when the Duke opens his house to allow a family to stay there while their house is finished. When Isabelle makes a plan to avoid the Duke, it is foiled the first day. They both recognize each other and sparks fly. However, a Duke cannot marry a governess, it is just not done.
Isabelle wants to open a boarding school and cannot become a mistress to a Duke if she wants to maintain her reputation.
Will they go their separate ways?
You will have to read it to find out.
This was a new author for me. Good plot. Romance was paced steady with characters growth through the book. I will definitely read more books by this author.
I liked this Duke and his love interest I found it diverting and the story had good content it kept you wanting to find out what happened I would recommend it.
I have been reading Darcy Burke for years and have enjoyed her books and this is another one that I will add to the list. This is part of a series, and this is the second book but can be read as a standalone even though I plan on reading the first book because I like to read all in the series. This is Isabelle and Val love story. These two meet as young ones when he is in College and Isabelle is around since her father works there but they will be forbidden since they are in different social standings. However you can't stop love and these two have a night to remember but move on since again different social status. They both marry but always remember each other and years later they meet again but now will they get a chance of an HEA or continue to be forbidden? Grab a copy and find out..Enjoy!
Another astounding Novel by Darcy Burke. Valentine Fairfax the Duke of Eastleigh finally meets Isabelle Cortland again the smart, Witty, intelligent, daughter of the head of the college at Oxford after they shared a night of forbidden passion a long time ago. Valentine never thought they would meet again, especially not working as a governess to his friends children. Isabelle is saving to finance her own school. It’s clear the attraction is still between them. Darcy never fails to draw you into the story line, with all the love and passion and you are hooked right from the start. A fantastic read that you cannot put down. A brilliant read from start to finish.
ONE NIGHT OF SURRENDER is the second book in the Wicked Dukes Club series. Each will stand completely on its own, but why deny yourself any of these wonderful reads?
The chemistry between Valentine Fairfax, Duke of Eastleigh, and Isabelle Cortland, now a governess, was undeniable ten years ago. Fight it though they both do; it is undeniable again.
I thoroughly enjoyed their story as they each tried to respect society and as Val was a perfect gentleman and respected Isabelle’s request not relight the flames that were so obviously burning beneath the surface for both of them. More so, I loved Val’s interfering family. When you’re high enough up the ladder, you can through society’s book to the side and grab the love that is so obvious in front of you. I only hope his sister, Viola, will be one of the matches made in this series.
ONE NIGHT OF SURRENDER is the first book I have read from Darcy Burke. I want to thank Erica Ridley for introducing me to her. I think I have found a new favorite to add to my list of favorites.
Note: While I received this book as a gifted ARC, my opinions are my own and are given freely.
A series in conjunction with Erica Ridley (an author I have read extensively, and thus was comparing) about certain 'Wicked' Dukes, their friends, and their romances.
An enjoyable tale, written competently but I found it too short for me. It could easily have been several pages longer in my opinion and then a more complex story could have been told. Whilst following the usual trope of ups and downs of a romance that we expect I was not sure that this book has quite the story-telling sophistication that for me is needed when re-telling Regency romances for the modern day. However, I’m more than happy to try another novel by this author. It is often awkward when joining in a series written by another author.
A highly entertaining, emotionally thrilling and action packed adventure filled with mystery, secrets and an undeniable passion .... this book hooked me from the very beginning and would not let go. Was a great read that had me breathless and longing for more. Loving these Wicked Dukes
3.5 stars!
A second chance romance of two people that were too young to understand that have fallen in love with each other and now meet again.
Isabelle and Val shared one night ten years ago and then each moved onto their designated lives. Ten years later, both are widowed and carrying scars from the past. In this novella, sparks fly again and two wounded souls learn to love (again).
I enjoyed this novella a lot, as it wasn't that one left the other years ago but that they simply didn't think they could be together and moved on. A good novella in what seems to be a delightful series!
*I was given an ARC on NetGalley*
