Overall this was a great read. It had an interesting plot and well-crafted characters. You cannot help but be invested in the story. The author makes you feel as if you are part of the story.
There is lots of great story on the primary characters and some great secondary characters adding to the mix. Max being one of them. Nik, pretending to be his twin Maximilian, and Maya's story is filled with action, suspense, romance, a bit of humor, and a great read. The pacing is fast and a real page turner as these two wade through the mystery of the missing girls that are targeted by human traffickers. **I was gifted "Special Agent Maximilian" by NetGalley** I also own a copy through Amazon. My review is based on my reading and given freely. 4.5 Stars!
Fast-paced, exciting entertainment. Steamy romance. Twins and mother reunite. Some humor, surprises, and action.
Thank you! I loved this book and the twin brothers and all the twists and turns.
It was a really fun summer read.
Thank you so much for sharing it with me. I looked for more of her books on NetGalley and at the library.
I felt like I stepped in the middle of a series with what was called a standalone. Admittedly, it is part of a series, but none of the stories seem connected, based on my research on reading their back cover summaries. This particular story had all sorts of things going on -- long lost twins, human trafficking, why do people want so-and-so out of the picture, on and on -- and I was a bit lost with all the stuff being thrown at my reader head.
What kind of worked in its favor because there was some zaniness was the retro feel, like something from a black and white film from the 30's or 40's. It was interesting to get that feel in a modern story.
This was a complimentary copy from netgalley - many thanks
I've not read any of Mimi Barbour's work before but will certainly be searching out the other books in this series
Absolutely loved it !!
Well written, fast paced action
If you like your romance books with mystery and thriller elements - this is for you
Lots of twists and turns - a little unpredictable which I loved
Highly recommend as a holiday read and with enough serious plot threads to make a good book club book
I really enjoyed this book. I enjoyed that Nik wanted to do the right thing for his newly discovered twin Max, but still gets exasperated with him. Nor is he perfect, he might be a Navy SEAL, but he's suffering with PTSD. Max was also quite a character, as was Juli. The women too were well drawn characters. Maya, the FBI agent partnered with Max, who ends up having to work with Nik and is nobody's fool. And the twin's mum Nellie, who'd suffered but was still strong.
Lots of action, a crime to solve, romance too - a great read.
Special Agent Maximilian by Mimi Barbour is a quick paced thriller with a warm gooey center. Complex, likable characters, both lead and secondary, keep the story careening along. Some of the relationships work so well, sliding into trust and connection without over explained backstory. Hot FBI agents, needy “waifs”, informants and sinister gangs make for a crowded and at times over populated cast. Yet, you want to dive into their stories and explore the details.
Not only does Nik Baudin find a twin brother in New Orleans but a mother he thought was dead. Max is an FBI agent who has been beat up and in hiding to recover. Nik decides to take his brother's identity so he can find the gang after his brother. This means Nik will have to partner up with Max's partner, Maya Barnes. She can tell the difference as she has an attraction to Nik she never had for Max. A story of brothers learning about each other and Nik getting to know his mother as well as falling in love.
The story here is not bad. I liked the characters and the surprises. The problem with this book is the editing. There were a lot of misplaced words and a whole chapter (69) was repeated; a good editor would have caught that. The next problem was the dialogue. It was awkward and unrealistic; it just didn’t fit the characters. Then, there were a lot of sugars, and darlin’s and babes, etc. that just didn’t fit. The way this was written was really awkward. I liked the story but it was an uncomfortable read. Don’t know what else to say. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for giving me an arc in exchange for a fair and honest review. All opinions expressed are my own.
What a fantastic book. It's got action, mystery, romance and humor, and there is never a dull moment. Incredible characters that you really get to know quickly, as well as a plot with a serious subject.
Max & Nic never knew that the other existed They may be identical twins but each was brought up by a different parent and each has a different career path Nic is a Lieutenant Commander in the Seals who is on medical leave due to PTSD while Max is an agent with the FBI. When a chance meeting throws them together in a coffee shop tto say they are stunned is an understatement. Shortly after Nic is badly beaten and Nic steps up to replace him on a case of human trafficking. Maya knows that there is something different about her partner in fact she isn't even sure if he is her partner because there has never been this electricity between her and Max all the time they have worked together. Will Maya realise she is working with her partners twin Will they solve the case and will love blossom betwen the two of them. Another great read from the very talented Mimi Barbour her books are always great reads with a wonderful mix of suspense intrigue and romance
The third book in the Undercover FBI series, Special Agent Maximilian was a good romantic suspense. I enjoyed the story and the characters and look forward to reading the rest of this series
The premise was great—twin brother impersonating his wounded brother to catch those that hurt the sibling and catch a gang of human traffickers. But after a quick start, the characters never really developed much depth and the plot kind of sputtered to a stall.
As a newcomer to the Romantic Suspense genre, I was looking forward to reading this book, because it sounded very interesting. A man finds out he has an identical twin and then discovers he must impersonate his FBI agent twin in order to solve a crime, along with his twin's partner.
The story just started off rocky for me, however, and never really recovered. We were told a lot of things in the story--the twins' backstory, the personality traits of each character, the development of relationships--instead of being shown. That took away from the emotional connection to the story and the characters. Also the way the characters talked felt jarring and unnatural. There were way too many exclamation points at the end of statements, and things that just did not sound like something a normal person would say in the course of an actual conversation. The two main characters attraction to each other also felt very inorganic and forced. I found myself skimming by halfway through.
I would not recommend this book and will not read anyting by this author again. I was disappointed.
