Another absolute summer smash for Sophia! This is hilariously written, so witty and relatable and it couldn’t be a more perfect poolside companion. I always enjoy her work (which can add extra pressure of expectation) but she never disappoints! Highly recommend.
I really enjoyed this book. It was a nice, easy read. A bit predictable, but still fun.
It was a good summer read.
I think the main character was very lucky to have the people she did in her life. The decision to be a single parent isn’t all that easy, but with a good network and support system life is much easier. Not easy, but easier.
The characters are well written and thought out and there wasn’t one that jarred.
All in all a pleasant read.
Thanks to NetGalley for the eARC.
I really wanted to enjoy this book given the “most hilarious” strapline but unfortunately, I didn’t think it was that funny and was too cliched.
Thanks to NetGalley for the eARC.
A good read, with friendships, romance and family which all lead to an interesting storyline. Full of humour despite the somewhat sensitive subject.
A good read. The story is funny at times and it's full of humour, friendships and family aspects which make it a an interesting read even if it was a bit racy at times. Loved Lil's character and when she finds herself pregnant after a one night stand with the lovely Max it was quite hilarious
Thank you to NetGalley and Harlequin UK for the opportunity to read What Happens Now? by Sophia Money-Coutts in exchange for an honest review. I have given this book five out of five stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Trigger Warnings: miscarriage, pregnancy, pregnancy complications, abortion, death
From the prologue I knew instantly I was going to adore this beauty of a rom-com. Sophia Money-Coutt’s writing immediately grabbed my attention; I started to snigger at the written humour and couldn’t wait to get into the story and find out what journey this novel was going to take me on. Sophia Money-Coutts, you’ve found yourself a new fan of your writing.
Lil is a brilliant character and I loved following her journey, I loved watching Lil learn and grow in this book; she was a very entertaining, relatable, brave and endearingly awkward. Max, our love interest, was a very charming and likeable man, although understandably, there were times where I started to question his motives when he ghosts Lil after their very intimate date. This book is made up of really great secondary characters as well; I absolutely adored Dennis, Jess and Clem. There’s a nice amount of development to the secondary characters so you’re able to tell them apart which I really appreciated.
About two thirds of the way through this book, I knew it was going to be a high rated book so I just had to buy a paperback version (which you can see in my photo above!). I would love to see this book turn into a movie adaptation, I think it would have a great Bridget Jones and The Holiday feel to it.
I had a really fun and enjoyable time reading this very honest and hilarious novel, which almost brought me to tears (so close!). I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who enjoys reading romantic comedies, especially laugh out loud romantic comedies.
My biggest problem with what happens now is it's supposed to be a romance/rom-com type book, and for me this just wasn't enough of a romance.
This was funny in places but two awkward sex scenes and two super short dates didn't make a it enough of a cute romance read, the relationship which I was super excited about between the two main characters isn't really present or worked on until about page 280. To be fair this is probably my fault I went in expecting a cute romance with two expecting parents who don't really know each other all that well getting to know each other through cute dates and bonding moments , and while they do bond it's not your typical cute moments. I also wasn't really all that interested in the slice of life chapters in here either so I felt it dragged a bit.
I probably would have enjoyed this more if going in I'd known it wasn't a romance but seeing as I expected that I was left really disappointed. Slightly bummed and sad that I didn't enjoy this but will still read from the author again i didn't not like the writing i just didn't gel with the story, hoping Did You Miss Me Will be a bigger hit with me.
Thank you so much to the publishers at netgalley for providing me with an E-arc in exchange for an honest review.
I haven't read anything by the author before so wasn't quite sure what to expect. I needn't have worried.
I loved reading about Lil's journey. The book was a light read with a touch of heavy subjects. I also really enjoyed the humour in the book. I laughed-out-loud more times than I can remember!
When I’m feeling ‘meh’ about life and I’m not up for reading my usual fare then I turn to Romance or Romantic Comedy because I need an emotional pick me up and the literary equivalent of a yummy vanilla cupcake with sprinkles. For me, ‘What Happens Now?’ was the treat equivalent of a slightly stale cookie.
If I could sum it up I would say, ‘I didn’t hate this, it was just really uninspired.’
This was an uncomplicated read which is what I wanted but it didn’t have much in the way of heart and I just couldn’t care for the main characters in any way. The two MC’s, Lil and Max, were two dimensional versions of the ‘immature woman in thirties with no life direction’ and ‘posh rich boy with sad back story’ types but read like a knock off version of Bridget Jones and Mark Darcy. At least with Bridge and Mark you cared about whether they would get together but Lil and Max had no chemistry with each other at all. I wasn’t even picking up on it during their solo date.
The chemistry and their relationship couldn’t be built because they spent the majority of the story apart and when they were together it was secrets, lies and emotional distance. If this were a real world couple you would hope they’d decide to amicably co-parent and move on romantically to other people but unfortunately this story was determined to make a square peg fit a round hole.
I enjoyed the secondary characters more than the main ones and would have been happy if Lil’s best friend and best friend’s brother (and their chaotic love lives) had more page time as they were significantly funnier characters than Lil. If the writer wasn’t shoehorning this in as a ‘romance’ it could have made for an interesting story on a woman unexpectedly pregnant in her thirties, forced to grow up but still retaining her sense of self by being supported by her loving family and well-meaning if entirely dysfunctional group of friends.
I can’t believe it but I was also more interested in the never explored storyline involving Max’s infertile ex-fiancée who really wanted babies. But I guess we would have been looking less at Rom-Com and more ‘Contemporary Drama.’ Still, I can dream.
I know I said I didn’t hate the story (and I didn’t) but there was one thing that I did truly, madly, deeply hate and I’m sorry but I’m going to have to go off on one now. I almost knocked a star off my rating because of this because I guess it’s a pet peeve of mine.
Lil gets pregnant after her first (and only) date with Max because her birth control pill was impacted by a stomach bug and she didn’t realise that could happen. That’s not the bit I hate. The reason she gets pregnant isn’t just because her pill wasn’t effective BUT BECAUSE THEY DIDN’T USE A CONDOM. What makes it worse is that they mention using a condom and decide not to because of the aforementioned pill.
I just…. No. No no no no no.
If they used a condom and it failed then that wouldn’t have wound me up this much but two adults in their thirties ACTIVELY DECIDED NOT TO USE A CONDOM EVEN THOUGH THEY ONLY MET THAT EVENING. Argh!!
Look I know this happens in real life but I cannot stand stupid characters who make stupid decisions for no reason at all. Contemporary romances should bring romance into this century and the whole ‘let’s not use a condom even though I don’t know your last name’ just doesn’t wash.
I think that was the point the book lost me and the more I think about it the more I want to remove a star just because it was so idiotic.
Well written book with a funny and enjoyable storyline. Lil and Max are great characters are I would love to read more in the future from Sophia!
Wonderfully written with lovable characters, A completely hilarious and laugh out loud book. If you are looking for something to help you relax and give you a good giggle this is the book for you.
Unfortunately, I have not been able to read and review this book.
After losing and replacing my broken Kindle and getting a new phone I was unable to download the title again for review as it was no longer available on Netgalley.
I’m really sorry about this and hope that it won’t affect you allowing me to read and review your titles in the future.
Thank you so much for giving me this opportunity.
Natalie.
A bit predictable at times but I really liked Lil's character and the easy, engaging writing style. Looking forward to reading more from the author!
Easy reading, lighthearted enjoyable book plus it makes you laugh, so what’s not to like ? Not high brow literature but fun and well written.
I really enjoyed this book. It was warm, funny and uplifting. I felt like I really knew the characters and was rooting for them!
Usually I prefer to read quick, mysterious full of plot twists thrillers. I reached for this romantic comedy not thinking too much of it, however I was positively surprised. The book was humorous, friendly and I was actually upset it finished. Great read!
3.5/5
Rom Coms are definitely out of my comfort zone so I put off reading this book for a little while. I shouldn't have, as when I did pick it up it was an enjoyable and engaging read.
I found myself caring about the outcome and rooting for unlikely characters. Overall I enjoyed this book and would recommend it to fans of Rom Coms but also those who would like to dip their toe into the genre.
Many thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for an advanced copy of this book in return for an honest review.
Made me laugh from start to finish. Great writing and comedy throughout. Brilliant characters and storyline.
Thank you to netgalley and the author and publishers for the opportunity to read this ARC for my honest opinion and review
I really enjoyed this book. If you like funny romance stories, that aren't overblown (Think Bridget Jones)- this is for you.
When Lil finds herself peeing on a stick after a one night stand with a man who turns out to be a rather famous mountaineer, she’s not quite sure what to do next. With Max either ghosting her or up a mountain somewhere, she decides to go it alone.
It’s witty, fast paced and enjoyable. Lil grows and matures throughout the novel, and the characters were likeable. Oh, and it’s steamy too. A perfect fun read.
Please note that this book is not for me - I have read the book, However I had to DNF and because i do not like to give negative reviews I will not review this book fully - there is no specific reason for not liking this book. I found it a struggle to read and did not enjoy trying to force myself to read this book.
Apologies for any inconvenience caused and thank you for the opportunity to read this book
