After breaking up with her boyfriend of eight years - the boyfriend that was supposed to be "The One" - teacher Lil Bailey finds herself unexpectedly back on the dating scene.
How to even begin? Well, a dating App seems appropriate for the times, after all, everyone lives their lives using Apps these days, don't they? One swipe right later, Lil ends up on a date with the unbelievably handsome mountaineer, Max.
They hit it off straight-away and as first dates go, this one is a huge success. After a very pleasant evening, with the wine and conversation flowing easily, it seems oh so natural to accept Max's invitation back to his place, even though Lil is nervous about having sex with a new "someone". Lil is on the Pill after all..what could go wrong?
The passion flows as easily as the wine and conversation, and Lil is surprised by how much she enjoys herself with the very fit Max, but he is worryingly absent when the morning comes and he proceeds to ignore all her messages after their date. Oh well, onwards and upwards....
What follows next is not exactly how Lil envisaged her future. One positive pregnancy test later, Lil has some serious decisions to make. She is single, thirty-one and living in the spare room of the tiny Brixton flat of a sexually athletic Australian couple, so not exactly the happily-ever-after she was hoping for.
When Lil decides she is ready to do the baby thing on her own, it seems she has to tell Max about his impending fatherhood. The Max that it turns out is the celebrity son of Lord and Lady Rushbrooke....the Max that is currently trekking up a dangerous mountain in Pakistan....maybe he wasn't ignoring her after all?
I absolutely loved Sophia Money-Coutts' debut rom-com The Plus One, so I when I got the chance to read What Happens Next? before publication, I was very excited indeed!
I just love Sophia's style of writing - the words simply roll off the page and once you start you cannot help but lap them all up until you get to the delicious end. Her characters are adorable (except the ones you are clearly allowed to hate), her wit flows freely, and there is enough emotion to require the nearness of a handkerchief at all times. She also has a way of writing about "posh people" that gives you a real glimpse into their lives - whether it be highlighting tragedy or eccentricity - that shows they can be just as normal as the rest of us (or not!). I have, yet again, laughed and cried my way through another of Sophia's books, and loved every minute.
Yes, this is a wonderful romantic comedy, with plenty of heart and soul, but it also poses an interesting question. What do you do if you find yourself pregnant after a one-night stand?
Well, it seems that the answer really boils down to "might this be your only realistic chance of motherhood?". Lil reasons that had she been in her twenties when this happened, her immediate response would probably have been abortion. Being in her thirties however, casts a different light on her predicament - how many real chances would she have of having another baby if she chooses not to go ahead with this pregnancy?
The stark way in which Sophia Money-Coutts outlines the probability of someone Lil's age being able to get pregnant again is pretty harrowing - it comes down to a numbers game that is probably not going to be in Lil's favour at her age, especially since she is single. Lil's only realistic chance to be a mother is the one she has been given right now, and it seems obvious to her that she has to grab it with both hands - even if she faces the prospect of being a single-parent.
When, and if, to be a mother is a dilemma for the modern age - one that has come with the advent of birth control (although accidents to occur, as Lil discovers!) - but the influence of "Old Father Time" on biology does have a part to play in our choices. What do you do if you are single and want to be a mother, but the clock is running down? Food for thought....
Second books can be tricky, especially when your debut has been such a huge hit, but let me say right off that this one is going to be a real winner too!
I am a firm fan of Sophia Money-Coutts and cannot wait to see more please!
PS. Sophia...am I right in detecting that Miss Montague has a little secret of her own?
A light fun read.
I found the characters engaging and there were some comedic moments.
Would be a good holiday read.!
This is the classic tale of girl meets boy, girl gets pregnant, now what?
Lil has just broken up with her boyfriend of 8 years and finally puts herself out there again six months later. She meets Max and has a great time with him then it all goes pear-shaped.
Although I felt like it was quite cliché in some places, it was a nice, easy read and it did make me want to keep reading to see what would happen next (why I ended up finishing it in less than 24 hours!).
I loved all of the characters and it was just enjoyable to read.
Telling the story of a pregnancy following a one night stand this makes a good holiday read. It is well written and the characters are nice, it is relatively funny but not overly so!
I am so excited to be part of the Blog Tour for What Happens Now by Sophia Money-Coutts! Thank you to the team at HQ, for being so kind to send me a copy of this book!
Without further delays, let’s see what I thought…
What Happens Now by Sophia Money-Coutts is a wonderful story that features Lil, who is a normal lady, living a normal life. She thought she has found ”the one”, but after so many years, this fellow dumps her for a twenty-year old blonde girl.
Doing what everyone should do, she moves on, and tries to find a new match, choosing a dating app and swiping right. She finds a handsome man that seems to like her and arranges a date. She gets ready, meets this guy, has a few drinks and spends the night at his apartment.
What is the worse thing that can happen?
Well – firstly, he doesn’t seem to respond to her messages at all. And then, she discovers that he is, in fact, the famous mountaineer Max, who is currently out there somewhere, climbing a mountain and can’t actually see her messages, the Max who is possibly Prince William’s best friend. But on top of it all, after weeing on a stick, she discovers she is pregnant with his baby.
So now Lil is single, thirty-one and living in a small flat in London, and this is not how she expected to become a mum. But our lady Lil here is probably the bravest woman I have ever encountered in my books, and she decides to do this whole motherhood thing on her own. Yes – she really likes Max, and it would be amazing if he gets involved too, but she doesn’t need him really. She can do this!
Throughout this book I felt so empowered to read about Lil’s daily challenges and I was cheering for her all the way through. She, and all women in the world that had the courage to give birth to and raise a child on their own should be praised, and I can’t think of any words to describe how brave these people are and how much I admire them!
Lucky for Lil, she has her mother and her stepdad along her way throughout the whole journey, and these two people are the friendliest and kindest people in the world.
And then there’s Jess – Lil’s best friend, who is, by the way, THE BEST FRIEND anyone wants. She was EVERYTHING and I loved her so much! She was always there for Lil, giving the best advises in the world. We all need a Jess in our lives!
And to be honest, given my low opinion on Sophia’s first book, The Plus One, I didn’t have high expectations on this one, but I think she outdid herself and created a masterpiece! The writing style has improved so much, that you wouldn’t notice these two books have been written by the same author.
I loved reading about Lil’s journey – I truly did. The writing was gorgeous and I couldn’t put the book down. Very empowering, but at the same time a very light summer read. I recommend it to all of you – read What Happens Now? this summer, and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.
This is Money-Coutts’s second novel and is a step up from the first. Whilst I enjoyed her first novel, it did have the like-me-like-me tone of many first novels and too much was crammed into it which made it a bit of an uneven read. Her second novel, however, is much calmer and therefore more coherent as a result.
What Happens Now tells the story of a pregnancy that is the result of a one night stand between Lil and Max, so far so been-there-before you might think. But the story departs from what you might expect to be the normal trajectory (not least the ending) which gives the story a fresh, more realistic feel that means that you invest in the characters more than you normally might.
Where Money-Coutts really succeeds is dealing with her central character. There is too often a tendency in chick-lit to create daffy, slovenly women who are a lazy reaction in a post-Sex and the City world. Instead, Lil is likeable, realistic and you feel warmly towards her and her predicament and hope that everything works out for her .
There are some loose ends, however. What happens with Max’s family? His father is drawn as quite a cartoonish character and that side of the story (the baby will be Max’s heir) is left totally unexplored. This isn’t even mentioned which seems odd when there are several mentions about Max being part of the aristocracy.
However, this is a minor quibble for a novel that is enjoyable and warm.
Fun and light reading.
I was looking forward to this book but it felt a bit hard for me to get into it in the first half of the book as the heroine was quite annoying and felt dragging a lot, but I rarely DNF a book and kept reading. I was glad that I didn’t gave up because the story became more interesting with every page til the end and had a lot of laugh out loud moments and funny situations.
A nice, funny and lovely summer read for everyone who enjoys the genre.
I felt a little mixed with this read. It was certainly a light read that one should could enjoy while in holiday but it just didn’t have that LOL factor and there was just too many moments where I found myself a little bored.
A fun lighthearted read
The book is honest, funny and relatable. I would love there to be a follow up book.
The author knows how to engage with her readers.
A good enough book to read with good characters and a good storyline to it. I didn't quite get the 'laugh a minute' feeling thought, a few funny bits but not enough to literally make you laugh out loud.
Absolutely brilliant. Yes, it’s slightly predictable if you’re a fan of the genre, but it’s an amazing ride, written with heart. Funny moments, great characters, fab dialogue and at the heart of it very believable.
Very much recommended.
What a lovely read, loved every page from. Start to finish, a great funny story with some great charecters, throughly enjoyed
The story of Lil and Max.
Lil is single after catching her boyfriend of 8 years cheating on her. The first date she goes on after all this is Max. After an awkward start they get on well, but then he disappears the morning after and then doesn't respond to her messages. What will she do when she finds out she is pregnant?
A fun and entertaining read.
I always enjoy romantic comedies (in book or film form), so I was pretty sure I’d like What Happens Now?, the second novel from Sophia Money-Coutts – but I wasn’t prepared for how much I'd love it, root for the characters, and snort with laughter time and time again while reading it.
Lil Bailey is thirty-one and single, after having been dumped by her boyfriend of eight years, the man she thought she’d marry. So she does what anyone would do, and swipes right, ending up on a casual date in a pub with Max, a handsome mountaineer. Then he ghosts her (or so she thinks), and a few weeks later, Lil realises she’s pregnant. What happens now?
What happens is a story that’s sexy (Jilly Cooper herself said Sophia’s first novel made her feel like a nun), funny, and heartwarming. From the love between Lil and her best friend Jess, to the camaraderie with her colleagues, the antics of the privately-educated five-year old's Lil teaches in west London to her bond with her parents, and of course, the ups and downs with Max, the relationships in the book feel real, taking in the good, the bad, and the hilarious. In short, What Happens Now? is a brilliant rom-com of a read that’s perfect for summer – or indeed any other time of year!
A wonderful summer read, great for the beach. Full of hilarious, laughing out loud moments (watch where you read unlike me). An amazing piece of classic chick lit.
Thanks to netgalley and the publisher for a free copy for an honest opinion
Lil is single after a long-term relationship. So she tries Internet dating, and meets Max. They enjoy an evening together, go back to his flat, and have hot steamy sex. The next morning, he has disappeared, and she has no idea where in London they are. So she goes home disappointed that he has left her alone.
Later she discovers she is pregnant, and sends him an email informing him. However, he turns out to be a famous mountain climber, who is missing on a climb in Nepal. Eventually he is found, and replies to her email, but is not too keen on the idea of her having his baby.
After having her first scan, however, she decides she is going to keep the baby. So what happens next?
A funny fast paced rom-com, with believable characters, and a satisfying conclusion.
A feel good , laugh out loud / cry book for the summer .
The descriptions of lil's life , sex life and pregnancy are hilarious but spot on . The sex in the story could rival Jilly Cooper .
Love it
Lil discovers she's pregnant after a one nightstand. This a really funny diary of a pregnant lady. Ideal holiday reading or curled up in an armchair for the day. Brilliant.
Initially, I struggled with What Happens Now? as I found the characters a bit annoying but I am glad I persevered. I ended up loving this book and all of the characters! The story deals with the intricacies of modern relationships as well as the sometimes horrifying realities of pregnancy. There were moments I laughed out loud as well as times I felt a bit teary. A lovely read!
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for providing me with a free e-copy of this book in exchange for my honest opinion.
This is chick lit which is just as it should be – fun, a bit of naughtiness, love, heartache and strong female friendships. It was just what I needed after a binge of psychological thrillers!
