Oh, I know how this goes – or so I thought after reading the blurb.
As it turns out, in the words of Ygritte from, Game of Thrones, “You know nothing, Tara Snow.”
The Day We Meet Again by Miranda Dickinson had many up and downs and twists and turns - enough to keep me guessing.
One of my favourite films is Before Sunrise (and to a lesser extent its sequel Before Sunset) and there are some similarities with this book so I already knew I liked the premise - although in the film they meet on a train and spend the day together (no spoilers) whereas in this book they meet at a train station and then go their separate ways for a year.
When Sam and Phoebe first set eyes on each other I actually felt like I was there. I could almost feel the rush of air as people bustled by and hear the noise of the station. I felt the sense of calm that comes over them when they realise, somehow, they are made for each other.
In that moment I believed in love at first sight but, as the story continued, I began to have my doubts.
Miranda conjures up scenes that I would want to live in, friends that I would like to have in my life and a love that feels big enough to go the distance.
I fear this is one of those books where, if you think about it too deeply, you could be put off.
My advice? Don’t think. Suspend reality and simply enjoy.
Loved this book, a perfect holiday read. Really enjoyed it from beginning to end. The only faults I could find, was that the main character was supposed to be having a year out travelling, and from what I could make out, she only went to 2 countries in that year - France and Italy - and only visited 4 places in total. I know why the author did that - to be able to spend time on the project the character was working on - but such a big deal was made about it being a huge adventure, that I think a bit more time could have been spent on bringing other destinations into the story. The same again, really, for the other character - who had gone on a quest to find out about his father. A lot was made out about him being a mysterious figure, but at the end of the day it wasn't really that mysterious. Perhaps a bit more could have been done about him. But other than that I really enjoyed it, and read it in one go.
This wasn't what I expected - it wasn't really a satisfying romance, but maybe that wasn't what the author intended. Quite a slow pace to this.
Is love at first sight really possible? This is the question that keeps the reader guessing the whole way through this compelling book. Sam and Phoebe are two strangers who meet by chance at St. Pancras Station and fall instantly in love. However, as they are each setting off on their individual one year adventures to totally different parts of the world they make a promise to meet one year on at the same place providing of course that they still feel the same by then. Can can such a brief romance stand the test of time? I enjoyed reading the alternating chapters where each of them tells of the journey that they are on from Sam looking for his long lost father to Phoebe travelling through Europe. Their only communication being by text, phone and e mail It was never clear whether or not their love could withstand their being apart for twelve months and right up to the end there were many twists and turns so I was eagerly turning pages as the book neared its conclusion to see just how things would work out for the couple. With lots of interesting characters, a beautiful love story and two very likable people in Sam and Phoebe this was a delight to read. My thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for giving me the opportunity to read this book in return for my honest opinion.
Thanks Netgalley and the Publisher for letting me review a really good feel good read with great characters. This author has a great style of writing.
This begins as a lovely love story, when boy meets girl by chance under a statue and they fall for each other totally, before disappearing from each others lives for a year.
the two story lines of their years away are wonderfully written, I wanted to be part of both worlds at every turn of the page, particularly meeting the friends they both make or return to.
The pair attempt to stay in touch whilst living disparate existences but misunderstanding arise as the written word (particularly text) can be so easily misinterpreted.
The need to find out if they both turn up to meet after a year kept me reading later than I should have been and the ending of the story was exactly as I would hop, after a few twists!
A great "day on the beach" type of read.
A beautiful, tender romance that lives on despite the trials and tribulations of a year apart. Sensitively written, always wanting the reader to return for more. An excellent read
A chance meeting at St Pancras station leads Sam & Phoebe to a year of ups & downs, ifs, buts & maybes. Will they find their happy ever after after being apart for a whole year or will it all be bittersweet!
Thoroughly enjoyed following their journey, although I whizzed through the last few chapters, as I couldn't wait to find out the conclusion & did find it a drawn out.
Miranda Dickinson is one of my favourite authors and this book didn’t disappoint. Love at first sight - does it really happen? I so wanted it to work for Phoebe and Sam. Oh why do we overthink things so much?
Great story, would definitely recommend.
An enjoyable light holiday read. It had an interesting plot and had bags of potential but fell down slightly with a somewhat weak female character. The story moved between the two main characters, Phoebe and Sam over the course of a year and a half. It was well written and easy to follow but Phoebe just seemed to lack depth and be somewhat reliant on others. At 32 and living in London, I would expect her to have a tad more maturity but maybe being an academic not so.
However that said it's a good escape and a perfect holiday book.
Phoebe and Sam meet at St Pancras station when their trains are delayed. It's love at first sight. But they both have adventures to go on - Phoebe to Europe and Sam to the Isle of Mull. So they agree to meet in exactly the same place one year from today. Will they show up? A lot can happen in one year.
I loved how this story was told from both Sam and Phoebe's perspective. I loved Phoebe's travels around Paris and Rome and really felt for Sam throughout the search for his Father. I couldn't put this book down and just had to find out if they both showed up. This was a great love story that I will definitely be recommending!
The story of Phoebe and Sam who meet at St. Pancras Station one June morning and fall in love. They are both travelling to different destinations and promise to meet the following year on the same day to see whether the initial spark they had for each other is still there. Will they be able to keep the promise they made to each other or will unforeseen circumstances keep them apart?
This book was an easy and enjoyable read.
I am a massive fan of the author and have been waiting for the book with great anticipation, I was thrilled to be provided with an ARC from the publishers and Netgalley. I found the story to be mesmerising, emotional and fantastic love story. Spanning over a year, a chance encounter where two souls found each other leads to ups and downs, misunderstandings and missed moments. With so many added layers from finding family and discovering your true self; this book is well written; with characters you will enjoy even if they get frustrating at times.
I sat and read the book in one sitting and it really struck a chord with me. I loved it.
Beautifully written with honest and valid feelings. It's a wonderful story of love that leaves you guessing right until the very end.
Oh my goodness I loved this story! Do you believe in love at first sight? Can falling in love hit you so quickly? Perhaps it can when you meet your perfect match. Sam and Phoebe’s love story had me smitten from the first chapter. I couldn’t wait to find out if they would meet again.
The story follows them through their lives for twelve months and has you feeling their pain.
I don’t want to give the ending away but can thoroughly recommend this book and would love to see it made into a film .
I enjoyed reading this book. It is an ideal holiday read.
It’s a story about love at first sight and how the two characters decide to meet a year later. I like the way the chapters alternated between Sam and Pheobe and what they had been up to on their travels.
Personally I don’t think it’s as good as ‘One Day’ but I still enjoyed it.
Thanks netgalley for allowing me to read this book.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for the ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review. This is a heartfelt and beautiful story which I highly recommend to anyone who loves a love story. A lot can happen in a year, this book is the tale of two people who agree to meet in a year if they still want to be together.
Didn't you just know that Phoebe wouldnt make it to the meeting point! I found her a strange mixture of academic adult and feeble traveller, having panic attacks about the thought of going 'abroad'....not far abroad really, just Europe.
She and Sam meet on the station whilst waiting for a delayed train, or two. They are each 'searching' for something and each going in opposite directions. They fall in love....all in the space of a few hours. Deciding to put everything on the back boiler for a year and then to meet up and 'see if they still liked each other', they eventually get off on their journeys.
It was a light read, and somehow I expected more of a Miranda Dickinson book. Nothing intrinsically wrong with it, but I wasn't overwhelmed.
However, thank you Net Gally for a chance to review the book.
This was an enjoyable read. Sam and Phoebe meet by chance at St Pancras station when there is a long delay. They spend a few hours together and fall in love! Both are embarking on plans for the year and they decide to meet up a year on if they still feel the same. They stay in touch and the story follows both their adventures throughout the year. I must admit the story wasn't as twee as I thought it might be, although I was ready to bang their heads together at one point! Thanks to NetGalley for a preview copy.
Copied to Goodreads.
Sam and Phoebe meet at Pancreas station and fall in love. They both have their own adventures to follow so carry on with their respective journeys to spend a year apart. Sam wants to find his father and Phoebe wants to find herself. They promise to meet at the statue a year later. They keep in contact via email and postcards and phone calls. I enjoyed the book and this was a lovely romantic read. However I found the point where they were supposed to meet at the statue and one of them didn't a bit poor in terms of character motivation. It didn't make sense to me. I would rather have read about them being together and trying to overcome obstacles of forming a new life together at this point. I don't want to sound negative because I really did enjoy this book but the last third of the book spoiled it for me because I didn't understand Phoebe's reasoning and still don't! A great holiday summer romantic read. Thank you to Netgallley and the publishers for letting me review this book.
