This cookbook is easy to follow and has lots of tips for the recipes, and I also loved that the author includes what side dishes pair well with what dishes. I am for sure going to try the simple salad recipe. I'm most excited to cook the sweet potato potage. I've never tried a potage, but I love soups. I also can't wait to try out some of the breakfast recipes. And of course the lasagna!
Overall, I thought this was a great cookbook, sadly I don't think I'll use most of the recipes, or at least not for family meals unless I omit most of the spices and seasonings, since my family tends to have a boring pallet. (Everything is too spicy for my daughter and husband haha).
Our busy work schedules sometimes make us dependent on fast easy dinners. In Nicki Sizemore’s new cookbook, “Fresh Flavors for the Slow Cooker”, I was hoping to find inspiration.
I was hoping for simple recipes that I could make using ingredients from my well stocked pantry but I did not find this cookbook to my liking.
It has recipes for slow-simmered main dishes, as well as a few recipes for sauces and sides.
If you are thinking of these recipes for the kids I have the feeling you too will be looking elsewhere as not many kids are craving Overnight Pumpkin-Brown Rice Pudding with crunchy pecans or Thai Curried Chicken with Rice Noodles with a spicy kick from curry broth.
I think these recipes are probably tasty just not recipes you would make in a typical week.
It took me a bit of time to get to this review because I wanted to make a decent sampling of the recipes to be fair about things.
Having now done so I can safely say that this is a fantastic cookbook if you are a slow cooker fan like me. I love nothing more than to have the crockpot up and running before I head out for my day. The only thing that threw a wrench in this? A lot of the things have a similar texture and sometimes taste so they can get pretty boring.
This cookbook is fantastic for a crockpot beginner. It gives great advice and practical tips to get you going. Each recipe gives step by step instructions and tasks that can be done ahead of time so you can minimize your cook/prep time the day of cooking. The ingredients will be stuff you tend to have on hand (if you like to cook) or can easily pick up at the local grocer.
I made a couple each, of the chicken, beef and pork entrees and each one was excellent with great flavors! My family loves the new additions to our menu!
I would definitely recommend this cookbook. It was easy to follow and had a nice variety of recipes that were accompanied by gorgeous photos. Thanks to NetGalley, the author and Storey Publishing for a copy in exchange for a review.
I really enjoyed this cookbook. It takes a different spin on slow cooker recipes.
It is broken up into five sections:
Vegetables
Chicken, Turkey & Pork
Beef & Lamb
Seafood
Breakfast and Brunch
First - the piece of a cookbook so often neglected by the reader (including me). This is well done and offers good advice for selecting a crockpot, the difference between the crockpot and the multi-cooker and different ingredients. I hope those that buy this cookbook start from the beginning because it is well worth the time.
Nicki gives a succinct intro with how she uses the recipe (friends over, casual) and little hints along the way (i.e. For best flavor, refrigerate the pork with the spice paste overnight before cooking). She also has notes at the end for storage and freezing. That is what makes this a cookbook that is teaching the reader at the same time as giving a flavorful meal.
The recipes are broken into ingredients
Jump Start - for those wanting to do things ahead of time (PERFECT!)
Instructions - broken into the stovetop and then ASSEMBLE THE SLOWCOOKER.
Serve - YES!
Prep time and servings.
Then there is the step which the author takes that truly helps in the dinner prep - what to make with it .... and the recipes. For example Asian Pork Lettuce Wraps and Sesame Scallion Sauce or the Chili with the Fish Tacos with Sriracha Mayo plus the Lime and Cilantro Slaw.
The recipes themselves are current; meaning these are foods we are taking out, ordering in restaurants and seeing in many stove top cookbooks. There are no mushy veggies where there shouldn't be some. When needed, veggies are added at the end to retain the crunch factor.
Yes, I would definitely recommend this to readers. I have only made one recipe - Best Beef Chile with the Jalapeno Cheddar Spoon Bread Muffins and I was impressed. (note to publisher: missing the cocoa powder in ingredient list). It is peach season so I will be making up some peach butter this week!
Thank you for giving me the opportunity to review this book.
Can I just take a week's vacation and cook my way through this book?
Oh wait, these are slow cooker recipes, these can cook while I'm at work. Nevermind!
I like the layout and helpful pictures, and the recipes are a nice combination of comforting favorites and new additions. I will likely buy this book for myself.
This is a great book for those who are tired of bland slow cooker foods. There are some great add-ins to make dinners full of flavor with little time spent cooking. Great for busy families who just want to sit down for dinner and for those who don't mind a little prep work to have a good dinner. Good for small families with serving for 2 - 4 that can easily fit into a small slow cooker.
Fresh Flavors for the Slow Cooker intrigued me. Considering that most slow cooker recipes are ho-hum and traditionally are repetitive. The book is broken up into five parts: Vegetables, Chicken Turkey and Pork, Beef and Lamb, Seafood, and finally Breakfast and Brunch.
Each recipe out of the 75+ in the book has wonderful instructions and many with explanations. The breakfast section is extremely interesting because the ingredients can be assembled the night before so breakfast is ready in the morning. Chef Sizemore has also added to most recipes sides and accompaniments to go with the recipes for an entire healthy meal. The photos are also excellent. Well done!
I would like to thank the publisher, the author and NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
This book is full of fresh and exciting recipes for the slow cooker. Not many stews which is a nice change. The book is well presented and colourful so the food looks very appealing. I’m. Looking forward to trying some of the recipes.
I've only tried a couple of recipes so far but they have been delicious and full of flavor. Our favorite so far is the Lamb Gyro.
Ok this book came along at just the right time. I’m trying to eat healthier and decided to get out my old slow cooker from the cupboard but apart from stew I was kind of stuck for what to make but since reading this book I’m inspired and ready to go to make delicious food in a one pot set up and go.
I was really pleased to get a copy of this book as I find the slow cooker invaluable when I don't have much time.
I was a bit disappointed as I am vegetarian and the vegetarian section of the book seems to have mainly stews and soups, which I was hoping to avoid. I did learn some good tips such as baking sweet potatoes in the slow cooker, which I didn't know was possible!
Sadly I am in the UK and all the measurements for all the ingredients in the book are in American measurements, with no conversions next to them. This really put my off a lot of the recipes as I would have to go through and convert each individual measurement myself. I was also put off some of the recipes which called for ingredients which are not readily available in the UK - yes, we can get them, but not at every single supermarket and they are usually expensive, such as canned pumpkin and challah bread.
All in all, I do think this would be a really good book for those in the USA - just not for UK readers.
This was such a fun cookbook! I found plenty of recipes to try on my own, especially for busy days at school. I can't wait to try these recipes and use all of the helpful tips included.

I really wanted to love this book. I mean what's better than finding delicious slow cooker meals.
However, with the exception of several fish dishes, I wasn't overly impressed with the claim of fresh flavors. While I appreciate the author, Nicki Sizemore attempting to show us how to up our game by using fresh(er) than traditional slow cooker ingredients, I just wanted blown away.
I have four children all on different schedules so needless to say I live by the crock pot. I am always looking for new recipes to try so I was excited to read this book. I will say it has some old standards in it but there are new twists which are always nice. I really enjoyed trying the seafood section because I have to admit I have always been hesitant to do seafood in the slow cooker, however the salmon turned out fantastic and my family loved the fish tacos.
There are some unique twists on slow cooker classics here. I appreciated that and the make-ahead tips. I found recipes I could adapt to a dairy free diet, so that was also great. Some recipes require multiple steps, which ruins the ease of a slow cooker night for me. I also never cook the veggies on the stove top first and the recipes here ask you to do that. Thank you to Storey Publishing for the ARC.
I would definitely recommend this to anyone trying to shake up their kitchen routine. She breaks down the reasons behind the methods of slow cooking and why some foods need to be precooked before going into the slow cooker. And, most important of all, is that the recipes are delicious.
I have always had a slow cooker since I first got married 34 years ago. Over the years I have pulled it out to use on occasion. But I'll admit, I don't use it as often as I should or could. In going through all my gadgets and appliances, I decided that I needed to start using them more often. So was extremely excited to get a chance to look over this new cookbook, Fresh Flavors for the Slow Cooker by Nicki Sizemore.
First I have to say this book has gorgeous photos! They say you eat with your eyes first, and with this cookbook, you'll get your fill. Lots of variety in the recipes & I have many marked to try. I'm especially looking forward to trying the fish recipes in the slow cooker. I haven't really seen a lot of seafood recipes in slow cooker cookbooks, but the photos looked delicious and can't wait to try them out! Fish Tacos with Sriracha Mayo with Lime & Cilantro Slaw, Moroccan Braised Halibut with Mint & Pistachio Pesto & Easy Bouillabaisse with Garlic Aioli Croutons are just a few recipes I'm planning on trying in the near future! Recipes also have "Slow Cooker Jump Starts" to help you get ahead of the game by prepping in advance, which is always helpful. This is definitely a cookbook I look forward to using.
Thank you NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read and give an honest review of this book.
Frequently, slow cooker cookbooks are filled with ho-hum recipes. Not this book. The photos are bright and they make the recipes appear mouthwatering!
Along with the slow cooker recipes, the author includes recipes for taste tempting side dishes, homemade breads, and fresh salads, making for a complete meal. This makes the recipes great for company as well as a midweek dinner at home. Included in this book are chapters on vegetable dishes, breakfast/brunch recipes, and seafood, as well as the various meat recipes. I was especially interested in the seafood recipes and the use of a ‘foil
sling’ when preparing seafood in the slow cooker.
Several recipes I intend to try are: fish tacos, pulled pork, turkey meatballs, and
green and cheese lasagne. This is a great addition to the shelf of any cookbook collector.
These are new and inventive recipes! I love how the book starts out teaching about slow cookers with tips and techniques. The Fajita Stuffed Sweet Potatos are wonderful. I can’t wait to try more of the recipes.
Many thanks to Storey Publishing and to NetGalley for providing me with a galley in exchange for my honest opinion.
This is a really good cookery book. I use my slow cooker a lot. This book sets every step out really clearly and gives invaluable ways of speeding up the cooking. I now have some new curry recipes and a chilli recipe that I am looking forward to trying. I have not cooked salmon in a slow cooker but I might try it after reading how to do it.
Thank you to Netgalley for my copy.
