A husband home from the war shell shocked and a dreadful mother-in-law who treats her badly and sends her out on a stormy night to collect belongings from her cottage on the verge of being washed away Betty Wellow feels she has had enough and decides to run away and start a new life and heads to Bristol under a new name. And so begins an eventful journey of ups and downs, twists and turns. I love Lesley Pearse books they are so well written and capture my imagination - this one was no different. An absolutely fantastic read once started I couldn't put it down. A true test of strength and the ability to survive against so many odds. Captivating, sad and yet inspiring.
Fabulous book love all Lesley Pearson’s books and this one didn’t disappoint couldn’t put it down the story was riveting and loved all the characters, it was a shame there wasn’t more story about her being a medium I really enjoyed that bit but overall a really good read,
Lesley Pearse has created another superbly entertaining book with a very engaging heroine in Betty/ Mabel who I couldn't help rooting for.
Have things ever got so bad for you that you wish you could just run away from your life and start again? Well, that's what happens to Betty Wellows. The daughter of a fisherman, she lives in a small coastal hamlet, where her husband has returned from world war one a shaken shell of an invalid who never speaks, doesn't recognise his wife and needs 24 hour care and spoon feeding. Bettys Mother in law Agnes is a harsh harridan from hell who detests her daughter in law and makes every second of her life a misery. The only escape Betty has is her late fathers tumbledown old cottage. When this is being demolished by a ferocious storm Agnes pushes Betty to go and get her belongings despite it being extremely dangerous.
In a split second Betty decides she's had enough and decides to run seizing the chance of escape. Ending up in Bristol things at first get worse for her. Changing her name to Mabel she finds work and tentatively makes new friends. Gradually we see her take control of her new life, nevertheless always looking over her shoulder in the fear of being found out, The world thinks she perished in the sea as her old home was swept away, but she lived to battle on and this is the story of her new life.
Lesley Pearse has, as always, created some wonderful characters, put them in desperate situations and made me believe their stories with all my heart. Mabel has to face some truly terrible awful events yet for every dreadful person she meets there is another who is wonderful. I was rapt in her story from start to finish, and when she finds someone else to love who is cruelly taken from her in a dreadful way I thought she was destined to be alone forever.
Pure escapism and a joy to read, I wholeheartedly recommend this lovely novel by this deservedly acclaimed author.
I love a good Lesley Pearse book and this one doesn’t disappoint.
The story is set during the first world war where we find Betty living with her shell shocked husband, Martin, and his vindictive mother, Agnes. When a storm devastates their village, Betty sees her chance to escape. Changing her name to Mabel, she sets out to try to better her life. Can she navigate the obstacles stacked against her and find the happiness she deserves?
As always with Lesley Pearse, the story was enjoyable, entertaining and easy to read.
Yet again Lesley Pearse has exceeded my view of her writing, this story of Betty / Mabel is a rollercoaster ride of ups and downs and you don't know where it will stop!!!
Betty is brought up by her dad after her mum dies when she is a child, Betty has a happy childhood and is very much loved by her dad. Betty meets Martin and they fall in love, while Martin goes to war as a solider. Betty's father is washed overboard on his fishing boat with his body being washed up a week or so later.
Martin returns from the war and is shell shocked and is no longer the man Betty fell in love with and Agnes Martins mum takes over looking after Martin so that Betty can work and bring money into the house. Agnes is a bully and dislikes Betty and Betty has to live with Betty calling all the shots!!!
Then Betty gets the opportunity to change her life for ever and restart her life, this is not an easy option but it means Betty/Mabel can try and better her life.
This is a wonderful story with so many twists and turns, it keeps you enthralled with the story from start to finish.
Lesley Pearse is a great storyteller and ‘You’ll Never See Me Again’ is a great book.
Betty Wellows abandons her miserable life and runs away to become Mabel Brooks. We meet an eclectic cast of characters on the way to our happy ending, some of whom are rather nicer than others!
I enjoyed reading this book as this author knows how to tell a tale that keeps you interested all the way through.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publishers for my copy of this book.
Another great read from Lesley Pierce Mable 's journey starts as she leaves home after her home is washed away in a bad storm she runs away from her old unhappy life and she has a long and difficult road ahead before finding the happiness she deserves Lots of interesting characters in this story good and bad which make this book a must read for fans or this author lived it
Another fabulous book by, Lesley Pearce, You'll Never See Me Again was an addictive, enjoyable read, I enjoyed it very much.
I have read all of Lesley Pearse’s books. She is a great storyteller and one of my favourite authors. This is a lovely story with likeable characters. You won’t be disappointed.
I absolutely loved this book.. I've not read much by this author but is rapidly becoming a favourite. Flew through this book.. just couldn’t put it down.. I needed to know what happens..
Absolutely brilliant as always, one of my favourite author's. Lesley's storytelling is just fabulous. I devoured this book in an afternoon, loved all the characters and who doesn't love a happy ending?! Amazing.
I always eagerly await the next book by Lesley Pearse. This one didn't let me down.
Betty was happily married to Martin and living in her father's house. Martin kept her safe from his mother who was a nasty piece of work and hated Betty.
Things changed for Betty when Martin came home from war so badly shell shocked that he didn't know who she was and was locked within his own mind.
His mother,Agnes insisted they move into her house and so her torment of Betty begins.
One night Betty sees the chance to escape from this hell and live a different life,so she takes it.
Changing her name and letting everyone think she is dead Betty now Mabel looks for work and someplace to stay and soon begins to make new friends and a new life.
This being a Lesley Pearse novel you just know that Mabel is not going to have a smooth ride in life and in quite a few chapters I feared she wouldn't survive.
Just as everything seems to go well for Mabel disaster after disaster happens to her.
At the back of her mind is always the guilt that she did wrong by leaving Martin even although he had no idea who she was.
I read this book in a day,I couldn't put it down. I just had to know what would happen to Mabel in the end.
Lesley Pearse is a wonderful writer she captures your attention on page one and holds it right through to the very last page. The reader can never trust her not to kill off someone they love from the story. She is never predictable. Loved it!
