Although set in the recent past, read no cell phones, this is a pretty fun story about people who have been betrayed and abused and find ways to fight back, prevail and find ways to avenge the wrongs.
The characters are pretty fun, and I most enjoyed Cassie's vengeance against scummy men and I suspect many women will understand in ways those often victimized will understand. That was the best part of the book.
Otherwise, good story; the only problem I had was with all the ridiculous sex. The author retreats to male adolescence with his obsession with constant sex. Clearly this is his fantasy and it does distract from the story.
Cassie is a bit immature for the work she does do and that doesn't always ring true to me since she is such a bad ass otherwise.
The character development as well as the action were both pretty disappointing in this story. I got about half way through and gave up. I love love love stories about tough women going vigilante on abusers, but the character development and dialogue were very simplistic. The fighting action was not realistic. At one point the characters talk about performing a flying drop kick, which is a hollywood move that no person should or would ever do in real life. Perhaps if someone was a huge fan of blaxploitation movies and hong kong action movies they might enjoy this.
Revenge, racism, and relationships are the 3R’s in this intriguing novel from Charles Isaacs. We often hear that revenge is a dish best served cold, but as 12-year old Cassie grows up and matures, we meet other characters, and sometimes stereotypes, along the way. Much more than an action thriller, this novel serves as an excellent commentary.
