I received an ARC of this book in return for an honest review.
The Daughter by Michelle Frances is a gripping and thought-provoking novel that kept me hooked from start to finish. The story is filled with unexpected twists, each one adding layers of intrigue and tension to the plot. I particularly enjoyed how the author masterfully wove in complex characters and moral dilemmas that kept me guessing until the very end. What made this book even more engaging is that it is based on true facts, lending an extra layer of authenticity to the narrative.
The characters are well-developed and relatable, and I found myself rooting for the underdog in the story, even when circumstances seemed stacked against them. The tension between the characters felt real, and their motivations were believable, which made the unfolding drama even more compelling.
This is a highly recommended read for anyone who enjoys psychological thrillers and stories that challenge your perceptions. I thoroughly enjoyed The Daughter and highly recommend it for its captivating twists and emotional depth.
An interesting story that could be any daughter/mother. Leaves you guessing until the end and then you start to think about your own mother/daughter relation ship.
A great book with an amazing premise, fast paced and kept going! Loved it and will read more from this author in the future.

A fabulous read that I knew right from the first chapter I was going to love. A fantastic story that you won’t want to put down.
I really enjoyed this book and the fact that the plot was a psychological thriller largely inspired by real events. I'm fast becoming a big fan of the author and can't wait to read her next book!
Unfortunately, I have not been able to read and review this book.
After losing and replacing my broken Kindle and getting a new phone I was unable to download the title again for review as it was no longer available on Netgalley.
I’m really sorry about this and hope that it won’t affect you allowing me to read and review your titles in the future.
Thank you so much for giving me this opportunity.
Natalie.
Thank you PanMacmillan and NetGalley for the advanced copy of this book.
I have never read a book by Michelle before and hope it won't be my last
This was full of twists and turns and had been hooked from the beginning would definitely recommend
I really enjoyed the girlfriend, so it was good to see that Michelle Frances was able to maintain her quality in "The Daughter." Filled with twists and turns and shocking revelations, this was one book I couldn't put down until I found out what happened next.
Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC without obligation.
I would firstly like to thank Netgalley and the publishers for allowing me the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.
Certainly an interesting idea for a story!
I liked the plot of the story - a mother trying to continue her daughter's work, and getting justice - it's heartfelt, warm and very brave. I enjoyed reading Kate's story. However, for me, it was a slow read. It didn't massively hold my interest, there was no shocking twists or turns, and there were a few story points that were either far-fetched, or complete dead-ends.
Overall, a promising premise, but honestly, 'The Daughter' was rather bland compared to this author's other reads.
Hoping her next novel is better.
Another really good book by this author! Kate's daughter is killed in a road accident but when she finds out what her daughter was investigating she realises that not only was her daughter's death not an accident but she had stumbled over something very sinister that was affecting the lives of potentially half of a villages population. Kate sets out to right a wrong. Good storyline that keeps the reader intrigued.
This had me hooked from the first page. A tense book which also takes time to explore mother daughter relationships and the secrets that we hide from our families.
A very good read from an author I have never read before . Would recommend buying this book it was excellent .
Excellent investigative thriller that had you wanting to read more and more , frustratingly heartbreaking at times with amazing finale , excellent
I really enjoyed this book. The way the author time-jumps between Kate when she was pregnant with Becky, and present day and time was done well, and gives the reader a nice back perspective about Kate and why she fights for Becky.
Well done, can't wait to read some more in future.
Recommended.
I had absolutely no idea what to expect from this book, and I'm in thrall of what I've just read.
It's the story of Kate, trying to do initially just get answers for Becky, and then she stumbles into something massive, and well, if I said large parts of this book reminded me of Erin Brockovich then you may have an idea as to some of the content.
In fact I could easily see Kate as Erin Brockovich and had Julia Roberts in my mind a lot as I was reading this, it's not a replica, and the motivations and everything are completely different and its only part of a bigger story, but once I started thinking it, I could stop.
To that end I think this would make s wonderful film, its a fascinating book and I could easily see it up there on the big screen.
I was gripped from the first few pages, and devoured the book over the course of the day. I learnt a whole deal of info about an industry I know nothing about. I suspected some of the wrong people as I just wasn't quite sure who to trust. There are twists and turns and overall its just wonderful.
Everyone has always written Kate off, she had her daughter incredibly young, and had always vowed to have Becky's back no matter what. It was wonderful seeing Kate grow in confidence, and in her beliefs after the worst happened, all to try to make her daughter proud and seek justice.
An eye opening story, with plenty of mystery and intrigue, and I'm glad to say the gorgeous cover even made sense to me eventually! Given this is the second book I've now read by the author and definitely not the last, I probably should read her debut at some point!
Thank you to Pan and Netgalley for this copy which I have reviewed honestly and voluntarily.
This was an excellent read and very upsetting
I would definitely recommend this book and will definitely be looking out for more of Michelle’s books
Life changing thriller!
Even though getting pregnant as a teenager was an accident, Kate Evans has loved her daughter Becky ever since she was born. It was always just the two of them growing up, and Kate was determined to give Becky the life she never had. Now thriving as a young trainee investigative journalist, Becky has made her mum proud, and she and Kate are closer than ever. One night, a terrible accident happens, and Kate’s life is changed forever. She stumbles across a story that her daughter was investigating and with the support of her boyfriend Tim, starts to pursue it herself in an attempt to make some sense of the tragedy that has befallen her family. What she uncovers is bigger than Kate could have imagined and may hold the answers as to what has happened to her family. However, by getting involved, she might be putting herself in danger, as the secrets she discovers are secrets people will do anything to keep hidden.
This was an interesting combination of an emotive family tale and a compelling mystery, that worked well together as a novel. The plot was original and well researched and flowed smoothly through to a dramatic climax and a neat conclusion. Kate was a likeable character and her devotion to her daughter and desperation to provide her with a better life despite being a single mother was quite emotionally powerful, as was her determination and courage to fight for the rights of those who she felt were being treated unfairly. Iris was also enjoyable as the motherly, self-deprecating old neighbour, although Tim the bus driver boyfriend was a little uninspiring.
The first few chapters felt a bit rushed and some of the big moments that happened didn’t have a massive impact on me as a reader as all the characters were new to me. However, as the plot starts to come together it develops into a gripping story where you find yourself really rooting for Kate to get to the bottom of the dodgy dealings she uncovers. Without going into detail on what these sinister activities are, the idea is quite unique and not something I’ve come across in a mystery-type story before, which made the book quite refreshing.
The relationship between Becky and Kate was central to this novel and, although touching, it unfortunately for me it didn’t quite pack the emotional punch that it felt like the author was aiming for, despite multiple flashbacks to Becky’s childhood interspersed throughout the story. I also felt that Kate’s behaviour following the accident was a little erratic and unexplainable at times and didn’t really make much sense within the context of her character.
In conclusion, I did enjoy this book and would recommend it to anyone looking for a different kind of mystery. The author is clearly a talented woman with a great understanding of human relationships, and I would be interested in reading more of her stories.

Kate and her daughter have such a close and special bond, but when Becky is knocked off her bike and killed on her way home one night - Kate contacts the truck company to try to convince them to make changes so that nobody else is killed by their vehicles. The company puts into place changes to improve the drivers visibility of cyclists and Kate is overwhelmed at how "easy" this appeared to be. Little did she know that this would start Kate finishing the journalistic investigation that Becky had been working on - and she eventually finds out the truth behind the "accident".
Kate puts herself through a basic legal qualification to help challenge chemical companies and the devastating effect of crop spraying on the local community.
The story switches between the past of Kate being a very young single parent and the present of Kate coming to terms with losing her daughter and fighting for justice. It can be a little confusing (and slow) at times but is an interesting need.
I haven’t read any of the authors previous books The girlfriend or The temp so I had nothing to compare this one too , I did enjoy this book , The book flicks between past and present which I love in books. On occasion I did find it a little slow in places but overall it was a good read. The premise of the story was interesting and the story kept my interest throughout. After debating for a while I did figure it out before the end , but this didn’t put me off . The only thing that I wasn’t keen on was the cover , I felt it didn’t match the story .my score is 3.5
