From the title and the cover, I expected a standard psychological thriller, but The Daughter turned out to be something very different.

Kate - pregnant at fifteen, thrown out and permanently ostracised by her unforgiving mother - has raised daughter Becky alone, working a succession of low paid jobs. When aspiring journalist Becky, aged twenty one, is killed in a cycling accident, Kate’s life is torn apart. But gradually, the under-confident, never-travelled, school dropout Kate becomes drawn into the story Becky was investigating, embarking on a quest both to seek justice and to honour her daughter’s legacy. In the process she will lead herself into danger, doubt who she can trust, and ultimately discover her own unsuspected strengths and abilities.

There were a few gaps - did Becky never show any interest in who her father was? - and a few plot strands which, while enjoyable to read, didn’t really go anywhere (plus one very cartoonish villain complete with moustache and foreign accent) but it was a hugely enjoyable and satisfying read. The”flashbacks” to Kate and Becky’s past did not really add to the story but were nevertheless enjoyable to read, adding depth to the characters. In fact the characters were a real strength, particularly Kate and her elderly neighbour Iris. (A trip they take together later in the book is a delight!)

Well researched and thoroughly engaging - a recommended read.

A story similar to Erin Brockovitch. Becky, a trainee has an accident with lorry. Mum Kat wants justice and makes a plea to the company who was responsible. She the. makes a discovery relating to the top-secret story Becky was researching and decides to uncover the truth. A brilliant read!

Kate never really had a plan for her life but getting pregnant at 15 really was off the scale. It meant that she had to drop out of school in order to support her beloved daughter Becky. Working several jobs she was able to keep food on the table and to encourage Becky to keep stretching herself and to learn as much as possible. Graduating with a first class degree in journalism Becky was on the cusp of securing a junior reporter role at one of London’s most prestigious papers when she was run over and killed.

A year later Kate has been struggling to come to terms with what happened and begins a crusade to change the trucks that killed her daughter, to make it easier for the drivers to see cyclists. This plan to right a wrong sees Kate discovering a side of herself that she didn’t know existed. A link to Becky.

Ok – I’ll admit it, I judged this book by its cover. It looked all light and fluffy, a good casual summer read. I really wasn’t expecting a South London version of Erin Brokovitch. The story is narrated by Kate in the present and by Becky in the run up to her accident. The Daughter is a real page turner with a fully fledged Hollywood style thriller of a plot. It’s not a book that I would have started if I’d read it’s synopsis but its a real corker and well worth the white knuckle ride.

Thoroughly enjoyed this and all the twists it offered. There was a lot of emotion running through the whole book with the reasons as to why things were happening and then ending was awesome!

Utterly brilliant read that I raced through, abandoning all thoughts of housework and ironing!! Looks at losing loved ones through unprecedented actions and the consequences of seeking the truth no matter what. Really loved it, perfect summer read. Thank you for letting me review this book.

I enjoyed The Daughter, I found it entertaining but there’s something lacking. Maybe I’ve just read too many similar books but there was no mystery, twists or thrills.everything was obvious from the start and if it wasn’t written so well I would have lost interest quickly.

The Daughter covers an interesting topic, one that I didn't really know much about before reading this book. However, I did find this story predictable and not so much a thriller.

In this books case, you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover, I still don’t understand its relevance!! This is a really good book centred around single mother Kate who has struggled bringing up her daughter and who ends up being an ambitious journalist....when her daughter dies, Kate comes into her own fighting the injustice that her daughter started. Inspirational and well written characters and a heartwarming story of a mother’s fight to finish off her daughters battle.

Katy and her daughter , Becky, have their perfect life. It’s always been the two of them since Katy gave birth at a 15. Tragically Becky is killed in an accident but Katy is determined to find out why her daughter died and ensure it doesn’t happen again but there’s much more than meeys the eye with this one.

I loved Michelle’s previous two books and this one was even better! Thank you to netgalley and the publishers for this arc in exchange for my honest review.

Becky is a trainee journalist secretly working on breaking a massive story. Telling no one of the secret she has uncovered leads to devastating consequences.

Kate, Becky’s Mum is searching for answers as to what happened to her daughter, and fighting to change the rules she stumbles across the story Becky was writing and starts to fight for the people involved.

A really great book.

I was totally engrossed in this book from beginning to end. The subject matter was reminiscent of Erin Brokovitch and Kate was certainly as tenacious as Erin. A real page turner which I enjoyed immensely.

This is the first book I have read by Michelle Frances - will definitely be reading more as this story is a gripping read from beginning to end.
Kate is a single mother to Becky, she has to work really hard to bring up yer daughter alone, she is very proud of Becky as she starts her career as a trainee journalist. An accident leaves Becky unable to finish the top secret story she is investigating, so Kate takes over, through her grief and determination she wants to uncover the truth and help other families.
This is a well written page turner with strong characters, there is a lot of emotion and a lot of twists which are unexpected,

I've read and enjoyed this author's previous 2 books, so was excited to have this latest one. It didn't disappoint. Kate's daughter Becky is a trainee journalist. When she is knocked off her bike and killed, Kate finds out that she was researching a story about the links between cancer and crop spraying. She decides to carry on the investigation. Although I felt the story was rather predictable, I liked the characters and enjoyed it overall. Thanks to NetGalley for a preview copy.
