I enjoyed "the girlfriend" and "Temp" but was very disappointed in this book. The plot was very obvious from the beginning so there were no twists and I don't think it worked either as a polemic on pesticides and agribusiness or a thriller. I also found I didn't really get to know any of the characters or care about them.
Thank you to netgalley and Pan Macmillan for an advance copy of this book.
Enjoyed this book such an easy read with likeable characters.
Becky an investigative journalist is working on a top secret story but she is stopped before she can tell her story, Katie her mum fights to get the truth for Becky and all the families involved but will she be stopped too.
Both ladies are strong and determined to get the truth no matter what.
After reading Michelle Frances other books “ The Girlfriend” and “The Temp” both 5 star books in my opinion, I was over the moon to get this book and couldn’t wait to sink my teeth into it!!
Michelle Frances you have done it again!! You had me gripped from the very beginning, I swear the world could have ended and I wouldn’t have noticed as I was so engrossed in this amazing book!!
Katie had her daughter Becky when she was a teenager and bought her up single handily. She has sacrificed a lot to give her the best start in life. Although life as a single mother is hard the 2 of them are very close and Katie couldn’t be prouder of her daughter getting a position as a trainee journalist.
Without giving this amazing plot away, there is a terrible accident involving Becky, Katie’s life is changed forever and when she discovers what Becky’s undercover story is she carries on investigating even though she is going against dangerous people who do not want this becoming public.
I was totally engrossed by this story of a mother who will do anything to find out what happened to her daughter and is fighting for people’s rights. I came away from this book feeling that if you have the determination you can put your mind to anything. In this instance Katie goes against corporate companies to fight for the right of everyday people.
Definitely a 10 out of 10 .A must read book that made me laugh and cry out loud at the same time!!
Thank you to Netgalley for my copy in exchange for a review.
I was delighted to be sent The Daughter as Michelle France’s previous book, The Girlfriend was one of my favourite books of last year.
As soon as I started reading it, I was hooked from page 1 and read it in one night.
The story is unique, clever and intriguing. It’s a must read for anyone who likes a decent thriller.
Brilliant! After reading the first few pages I was gripped, so many twists and turns! Definitely worth reading!
This is a really good read. It is gripping the whole way through. It is definitely a page turner. I was totally caught up in the story and would recommend it.
Thank you to Netgalley for my copy.
Becky is a twenty one year old budding trainee journalist, when looking into a possible ground breaking story about a village just outside London,,little did she realize that she is putting her life at risk.
When Becky is run over by a lorry on her way home from work and killed Becky's mum Kate is not only heart broken but devastated.
The day Becky was killed after seeing her daughter in the morgue Kate returns home and finds she has been burgled.
Is Becky's death a tragic accident or something more sinister.
Kate follows Becky's last story and what she uncovers puts everyone's life at risk.
I was really pleased to be given the opportunity of reading the new novel by this author. I really enjoyed it, told in flashback it's a gripping read and the mystery of what happened to Becky, Kate's journalist daughter kept me engrossed. I really felt for Kate as a mother as she tries to get justice for her daughter. Loved it.
Ridiculously readable. What started as (I thought) a slightly cliched mother-daughter story (would they fight over the same cad?) quickly became darker, and thus more compelling. Echoes of Erin Brockovich - she's even referred to at one point - but still, a combination of the taught plot, neat writing and high, high stakes kept me reading till well into the night. It wasn't quite as literary as Ms Francis's last two novels, in my opinion, but was nonetheless massively page-turning. A great fun read.
The Daughter was a novel I had been excited about for a while as I was a big fan of Frances' previous two novels The Temp and The Girlfriend but I found it to be a bit of a letdown. Kate's daughter Becky is a reporter who is killed in an accident. Kate feels her death is senseless and starts looking into what Becky was working on and whether it might be related to her death. Unlike the other two novels this is predictable and not remotely gripping. It's not badly written but it doesn't seem to know whether it is a thriller or an Erin Brockovich type situation. Bit disappointed and definitely wouldn't recommend.
Powerful and twisty, a taut and terrific read that hooked me from the first page. A really well written story, loved it!
