'The Yankee Comandante' with story and art by Gani Jakupi is a very well researched graphic novel about Cuba, but I had a hard time staying focused and interested.
Centering around the true story of American William Alexander Morgan, aka The Yankee Comandante, this book takes place during the Cuban Revolution. William embeds with the rebels in the Escambray Mountains, and not speaking a word of Spanish, he helped overthrow the Batista government, paving the way for Fidel Castro to take over.
I had a hard time staying interested in the story told here, and it should have been really interesting to me. The art works well, and I loved the afterword with real photos and all the notes about the research.
I received a review copy of this graphic novel from Europe Comics and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for allowing me to review this graphic novel.
I'd not heard of William Alexander Morgan or of the part he played in the Cuban Revolution. This Graphic Novel sets out his story in an interesting and informative manner. The art reminded me of comic strips I used to see in newspapers as a kid (James Bond, Modesty Blaise) and as such seemed very fitting given that much of this story took place in the late 1950s. Well worth your time if you are remotely interested in military or political history.
I thought this was an interesting story but I found it hard to follow because of the artwork. It was difficult to distinguish between the main characters and this made it hard to follow what was actually happening. Having said all this if anyone is interested in the Cuban Revolution then this provides another perspective to explore.
