This was a real treat to read. Set in an upmarket area of Dublin it concerns a group of neighbours in Pine Road and their everyday lives. They are a diverse group of people: Trish, a head teacher of a local high school. Edie, a young woman desperate to get pregnant, Robin, a single mum who has returned to live with her parents and suspects her ex of having been involved in a serious crime., Bernie, the chair of the local high school's PTA, her acolyte Ellen, who turns against her and Rita-Ann, a woman who is obsessed with someone stealing her newspapers. These are just some of the memorable characters you meet. Much of the action is shown through WhatsApp messages and concerns the organising of the Easter Egg Treasure Hunt as well as passing on local gossip about Martha and her family who've just moved in.
I've long thought WhatsApp groups could be a real source of material for writers. If you've been a member of any, you'll know what I mean. Shortall deals with this very well and very humorously. You'll recognise the petty infighting that can go on over these things and the point scoring.
The characters are very well drawn and I just didn't want the book to end. Thanks to NetGalley and the publishers for the ARC.
This is a fab read that had it all; humour, secrets and mysteries! I really enjoyed it, it was well written with great characters!
My thanks to NetGalley and publisher Atlantic Books - Corvus, for the ARC.
Oh! - this book is amazingly entertaining: well-written with non-stop witty dialogue and a host of amusing characters and situations. All this overlays the real dramas involving jealousies and scandals and individuals' dilemmas.
Set in a cul-de-sac of terraced houses in a middle-class area of Dublin - Pine Road - we are treated to hilarious introductions of the residents and their neighbourhood concerns as they perpetuate their gossip through their WhatsApp group. The most topical subject being the new residents at No.8. Martha, husband Robert and their 2 teenage daughters have recently moved in - a move instigated by Martha following an incident in Limerick.
Robin has moved back to her mother's house with her son Jack, splitting from her boyfriend Eddie - who is hassling her to provide him with an alibi for a certain night.
Edie is married to Daniel and is desperate to start a family - except Daniel keeps coming up with excuses for why they shouldn't.
Meanwhile - where are the rats coming from that have been spotted in the gardens? Who's stealing Rita-Ann's newspapers? and will Bernie - the neighbourhood 'organiser' ever be able to show her face in public again!
This really is an enjoyable read; it has some mystery and intrigue, secrets and lies, and the plots keep twisting. Thoroughly recommended.
A really good story that almost felt like real life in places. Great characters that felt like a community and interesting stories about each of the characters.
Thank you to Netgalley for my copy.
An amazing book that kept me hooked till the end.
I loved the well written cast of characters, the setting, the engaging and entertaining plot.
I look forward to reading other books by this author.
Highly recommended!
Many thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this ARC, all opinions are mine.
Pine Road is a cul de sac of middle class residents who keep an eye out for each other, when new neighbours appear, everyone is curious. The residents of the neighbourhood seem very happy, but many are hiding worries and disappointments.
Comparisons to Maeve Binchey are likely for many reasons, Dublin location, neighbourhood jealousies and competitiveness to name a few. Also great humour and plenty of colourful characters.
Quite a few laughs and a very good story.
I really enjoyed reading about the residents of Pine Road and highly recommend
Thanks to netgalley and Atlantic books for an electronic arc.
