The Country Inn Mystery, is #7 in the Jenny Starling series by Faith Martin and having read the previous five and really liked them I couldn't wait for this one for which many thanks go to Netgalley for me being approved.
Great plot, relatable characters and a thoroughly great cosy mystery series. I have just moved Faith Martin to the top of my new Favourite Authors list.
I very much enjoyed this book. It has a good story and excellent main characters. I would definately recommend this book.
Jenny Starling makes her living doing just what she loves - travelling the country to cater events , cooking wonderful food . Standing over 6ft in height , with curves that many think sexy , she is what many would see as a very modern woman .
Her latest gig at the Spindlewood Inn finds her catering for a Regency Extravaganza - amateur dramatics and food - until the leading lady is found dead in the lake- murdered .
Being a great judge of character , Jenny uses her witts , with plenty of humour , to investigate the case.
There are plenty of clues , red herrings galore , simmering passions behind the troupes scenes - just what Jenny needs to finally crack the case .
This is a delightful cosy murder mystery to while away a lazy afternoon - with a great lead character , who I must say provided me with chuckles along the way .
I was giben an arc of the book by NetGalley and the Publisher in exchange for an honest review
This is one intense, twisted, dark and addictive novel! Not only is this a very well-written book with wonderfully-interesting characters, but the suspense builds at just the right pace as the story unfolds. Compulsive, gripping and horrifying! Will keep you on the edge of your seat!
The Country Inn Mystery by Faith Martin is the seventh book in her Jenny Starling, traveling cook series. I have loved reading this book again......If you love a this cosy mystery this is the series for you. Plus, a great holiday read.
One thing I just love about Faith's books is they can be read as a stand alone book........they're a quick and easy read hence why I called them a cosy mystery book. I open my kindle and just become the book.......Faith has a way of doing this.
I remember reading this when it was called ‘Detective Hillary Greene’ mysteries. My Mum recommended this series of books, many years ago. It was lovely to see this series being re released under a new name.
Big Thank you to Netgalley and the Publishers for my copy. This is my honest review
Over recent months I've become a great fan of Faith Martin so, when I saw this seventh book in her wonderful series featuring Jenny Starling being launched, I knew I had to read 'The Country Inn Mystery'. Also, it has a culinary theme which I love and a little light humour. The first three books - The Birthday Mystery, The Winter Mystery and The Riverboat Mystery were all so good, I knew it was likely that Faith Martin had written a winner with this book, too, and I was right!
Best-seller author Faith Martin has also written the ‘Detective Hillary Greene’ mysteries.
Faith Martin’s writing skills set the scene beautifully for this novel and in this case, the drama takes place at the Spindlewood Inn. Her character development was as marvellous as ever, particularly that of Jenny, living and loving life as a travelling cook. She is happy travelling the country catering for different events and cooking great food. She doesn’t like having to divert her attention from baking delicious cakes or creating a new sauce recipe by having to solve murders. She is great at reading people and unmasking killers, always with a good dose of humour. Rachel Norman is the victim, and her not-so-great personality, means that almost everyone is a potential suspect. Jenny winds up assisting the police, but are they about to arrest the wrong suspect?
With many clues and lots of red herrings to keep the reader guessing, this was a thoroughly satisfying read and I often found myself asking the same questions as Jenny as I was kept in suspense right to the end. The pacing in 'The Country Inn Mystery' was very good and I never lost interest, as it wasn't long before something intriguing would happen. Things came together for a marvellous denouement and wrapped everything up very neatly.
This series can be read in any order since Jenny finds employment at different locations in every book, and I'm definitely looking forward to reading other books by Faith Martin. 'The Country Inn Mystery' is a fantastic read for anyone who likes to play armchair detective, deciphering the clues, and making a best guess as to the identity of the killer.
I received a complimentary digital copy of this novel, at my request, from Joffe Books via NetGalley. This review is my own unbiased opinion.
Jenny Starling is a traveling cook and agrees to replace her friend in a small country inn so her friend can take a vacation. There will be a group of amateur actors recreating an historical tale of love and loss where the recreated ending becomes all too real.
A nice little mystery but it lack something to really grab me as a reader. Maybe if I had read the previous books in the series I would have liked it more.
Faith Martin is quickly becoming a favourite and I love this cosy mystery. It was well written with enough twists and turns to keep the reader interested.
Thank you to NetGalley and to the publisher for allowing me to read a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
This is te first book that I have read by this author. I enjoyed the story and the British point of view which is a little different than what I normally encounter. I will belooking for more books by this author.
I love reading books by Faith Martin, they get better each time. An easy read to settle down with a cup of tea. It draws you in and keeps you hooked till the end.
I love Faith Martin and her cosy mysteries, they are just perfect when you are in the mood for a well written, engaging story to snuggle up with. The characterisation is first class and there are plenty of twists and turns to keep you interested.
A great read.
This is book 7 in the Jenny Starling series, and yet again she has been asked to cater for a big event. This event is set in a nice country cottage, which is hosting an am-dram production of an old play.
The scene setting is really at the start with lots of people all hating each other and lots of tension throughout, whilst we are working out who is going to be killed.
All looks to be going well for Jenny, until near the end of the play when the leading actress dies in a lake with no-one near her. After this Jenny steps up and, yet again, investigates the case. The difference this time is that the police actually find her useful and turn to her for help.
As with the other Starling books this one has lots of twists and turns, made all the more intriguing with the way the leading actress died. All of the little red herrings and twists made it an enjoyable book and the series is getting better the further on we go.
Faith Martin writes some of the best cozy mysteries on the market today. Her characters are well developed and set into a community that fits them to a "T". The Country Inn Mystery takes our travelling chef and sets her down in the Cotswold in the fall. Beautiful scenery, great food and don't forget the murder! A fun, quick read that will delight along the way to solving the crime.
Twisty plot, humor, interesting characters, appetizing food, ghost walks, amateur dramatics, suspicious death, an impossible murder, a cunning culprit, a few red herrings and a tragic love story.
In the 7th book of Jenny Starling series, Faith Martin is at her best.
Thanks to the author, Joffe Books and the NetGalley for a copy of the book.
This is like a modern day Miss Marple
I read this book in one sitting but then it is quite short. However the story did completely captivated me
A great read
I enjoy mysteries set in the Cotswolds and this book was perfect...it was fun, "kept you guessing" and the descriptions of September in the Cotswolds were enchanting!
Jenny is a "traveling" chef who is helping out a friend (a chef at the Spindlewood Inn) who is on vacation. Preparing meals, with historical accuracy, for the Recency Extravaganza being held at the Inn, keeps her busy. However, not so much that her natural curiosity about the Inn's tragic history, the owners and guests is ignored. When a tragedy occurs, Jenny is ready to use her sleuthing skills.
I enjoyed this book and I loved the characters. Jenny is smart, funny and determined to solve the case. The setting was charmingly British and I appreciated the British "slang" dictionary included by the author. If you enjoy modern British mysteries, you'll love this series!
I received an ARC from NetGalley for a fair and honest review of this book.
This is not my favourite series by Faith Martin but is still very enjoyable. If you're looking for a not-too-taxing mystery to read on holiday then this fits the bill nicely. The characters are fun to spend time with and the crime is not gritty!
What could be better then a Regency themed weekend at a charming B&B in the Cotswold's and a murder ! This is such a fun to read mystery with charming charcters, vivid descriptions of England and a outstanding sleuth Our traveling chef protagonist Jinny is back and she is once again solving a crime and cooking for a outstanding group of charcters amid murder . I love the author's creation of this world and this book truly took me away.. The sleuth was multi-layered and pleasingly to conclusion . This is a enjoyable read for all who enjoy Agatha Christie and cozy mysteries. The menu is a delight and the sleuth was very well crafted for every mystery reader to enjoy..
Jenny was a travelling cook who loved her food and nothing pleased her more than arranging an Regency feast for the weekend guests of the Spindlewood Inn. What she did not like was the atmosphere that said that murder had followed her to her new job again. The guests were here to follow the Regency story of a wife and lover caught by her husband. A duel is arranged the husband cheats and departs England the lover dies and the wife upon hearing this has committed suicide in the local lake. There would be a re-enactment by actors but this comes true to life with a body in the water. Watch Jenny gentle help the police solve the crime. You will enjoy following on with Jenny to solve the mystery before the police.
I was given an ARC of this book by Netgalley and the publisher in exchange for an honest review.
Riveting and totally engaging, this thrilling Jenny Starling kept me glued to every page. A rather complex sets of characters with all so puzzling demeanors. It took Jenny awhile to figure out the truth and pointing the officers in the right direction. Which allowed them to avoid any embarrassment by them arresting the wrong culprit. A lovely intriguing and captivating read.
