Due to a sudden, unexpected passing in the family a few years ago and another more recently and my subsequent (mental) health issues stemming from that, I was unable to download this book in time to review it before it was archived as I did not visit this site for several years after the bereavements. This meant I didn't read or venture onto netgalley for years as not only did it remind me of that person as they shared my passion for reading, but I also struggled to maintain interest in anything due to overwhelming depression. I was therefore unable to download this title in time and so I couldn't give a review as it wasn't successfully acquired before it was archived. The second issue that has happened with some of my other books is that I had them downloaded to one particular device and said device is now defunct, so I have no access to those books anymore, sadly.
This means I can't leave an accurate reflection of my feelings towards the book as I am unable to read it now and so I am leaving a message of explanation instead. I am now back to reading and reviewing full time as once considerable time had passed I have found that books have been helping me significantly in terms of my mindset and mental health - this was after having no interest in anything for quite a number of years after the passings. Anything requested and approved will be read and a review written and posted to Amazon (where I am a Hall of Famer & Top Reviewer), Goodreads (where I have several thousand friends and the same amount who follow my reviews) and Waterstones (or Barnes & Noble if the publisher is American based). Thank you for the opportunity and apologies for the inconvenience.
Appreciated of the ARC as always, however really could not get into this book. It was clear you needed past knowledge to understand character story lines and didnt enjoy the writing style. Was my first ever JA book and wont try them again.
It's a good couple of decades since I've read a book by Jeffrey Archer. The only reason is that so very many (hundreds!) other books have ended up on my TBR, they pushed those by my favoured authors out of my mind. So I thought I'd revisit one of my erstwhile favourites with this, the first in the Detective William Warwick books.
Archer hasn't lost his knack, that's for sure. It's really well written, easy to read, totally absorbing, moves along at a cracking pace and great fun. I love that the series starts right at the beginning of Warwick's police journey. In this, we see him embark on his detective career with the arts and antiquities squad, investigating the theft of a priceless Rembrandt. His success no doubt will determine his future. The art interest also gifts him with his love interest, all expertly interwoven to provide an enjoyable and entertaining read. I did, in fact, guess the little twist at the end, but it still raised a smile of satisfaction.
Note to self: don't wait another twenty years to read the William Warwick #2.
"'You’ll never come back, Choirboy. Lambeth has just been the first rung on what I expect will be a very long ladder. But be warned, on your way up you’ll come across plenty of snakes who’ll be only too happy to send you back down a ladder, and some of them will be wearing blue uniforms,’ he said, rattling a shop door to make sure it was locked."
This is the origin story of William Warwick, told with Jeffrey Archers' usual flair. I was easily and willingly absorbed in William's story. Highly recommended. I look forward to the books that I am sure will follow.
Another great book by Jeffrey Archer I have read all of his books and loved them all and this is no exception with the usual great plots and intrigue so that you don't want to put it down.
Eventually got around to reading this and glad I did. This is a spin off from the Clifton Series, I loved the Clifton Series from beginning to end , so when I saw that Jeffrey Archer had done it again and come up with a story for Detective Warwick i was delighted, just cannot wait for the next book, and this book also gives an insight to the intrigue of Art World which was an added bonus.
I love this book and found it difficult to put down - I didn't want it to end. Jeffrey Archer is on fine form once again. Luckily, there are another two books in the trilogy to sate the appetite. It's easy to read, has an enthralling plot and the pacing is superb.
Fortunately, 'Hidden in Plain Sight' is available so I'll be reading it as soon as this review is submitted.
I've submitted the above on Amazon UK & Good Reads.
Fantastic!!!! Hidden in Plain Sight by Jeffrey Archer was.........This book is the First book in the Detective William Warwick series and I just loved it. I was hooked within the first few pages and I so wanted to learn more about Detective William Warwick.
I have read a few of Jeffrey Archer's books and I have enjoyed all of these. This will not be the last book I will read of his. I highly recommend his books
Big thank you to NetGalley, Jeffrey Archer, and St. Martin’s Press for providing me with a copy of this publication, which allows me to provide you with an unbiased review.
This is the start of a new series by Jeffrey Archer, and was setting the scene. He certainly writes a good story and is incredibly popular at the library, we have loads of reservations for his books.
I love pretty much any book by Jeffrey Archer as they are an easy read and the story draws you in.
My only problem with these series of books is that you wait a long while before the next and forget what has happened in previous ones - that being said I would recommend this as another great read.
Yet another great story by Jeffrey Archer.
The characters were engaging and although at times it was a bit far fetched,
it certainly kept me entertained.
I couldn't put it down and was sorry when I finished it.
Archer weaves an intriguing web as a master storyteller. This is an engaging page turner and a bit of a guilty pleasure. Would recommend to those who love an intelligent, well-drawn character.
I love this author’s books, so was excited to read this one which is the first book in the William Warwick series. For the more eagled eyed amongst us, William Warwick is the character in a book written by one of the characters in The Clifton Chronicles series, also written by the same author. I have to admit though that this book didn’t initially grab me as quickly as other books by this author have. William Warwick is an interesting character, however, with the storyline introducing him to us and how he became to be a detective in the Metropolitan Police, against his father’s better judgement!
The initial storyline laid the path for the rest of the story, with William working his way from a uniformed officer to a Detective at Scotland Yard working for the Arts & Antiquities Squad. Once he was looking into the case of a stolen Rembrandt painting, the slower start to the book was forgotten and, for me, the story began to pick up pace. By the time we’d reached the end of the book, the writing that I had come to know and love from this author was back, with cliff-hanger chapters, court cases and clever twists and turns. I loved the last few paragraphs and, as in the previous series, the author has left the storyline open to be picked up in the next book!
The characters are well written and likeable, with just the right ratio of good guys to bad! It is full of historical information and facts which the author has obviously gained from his own experiences. These, the clever writing and the twists and turns of the story are what made the book interesting and difficult to put down as the conclusion approached! If you are struggling with the slower start, don’t be lulled into the thought that perhaps the author has lost his magic because it is still there!! A great ending, and I genuinely can’t wait for the next book in the series!
I haven’t read any of Archer's previous books in the Clifton Chronicles, but I don’t feel you need to have read them to enjoy this book. It’s a great introduction to a new series, fleshing out the characters. A good read that keeps you interested & wanting to know more.
Nothing Ventured is a kind of origin story of William Warwick. He is a detective who features in another series of Jeffrey Archer books and from what I can make out he is a very well loved character, and this book has been cried out for by Archer’s fans for years. I haven’t read any of those books so I didn’t know who William Warwick is, but since this is an origin story it really doesn’t matter and you absolutely don’t need any prior knowledge of the character the enjoy this book.
The story follows William when he is just starting out in the police force, and his experience of his training and his first few cases. It also follows the story of William meeting a girl and starting to date. I’m sure this is only the beginning of this origin story, and there will be many more cases and exploits to follow.
As the blurb says, this isn’t a detective story, it’s a story about a detective. Although at this point William is really still a young lad and only just learning what it means to be a detective, and also what it means to be a man out on his own. Of course, William is the main character in the book but there are other supporting characters which add to the story, such as his father, his girlfriend and the police officers he works with.
This is just a fantastically entertaining book. The characters are rich and vibrant, the setting of the story is brilliantly old fashioned and upper class, and the different cases and how William goes about solving them are fun and clever. This book is not serious at all, it’s simply what I would call a caper. It’s so much fun and made me think of old comedy films with Michael Caine as some handsome genius who rounds up all the bad guys effortlessly and with a witty quip thrown in here and there. And of course he always gets the girl too!
I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who likes a bit of entertaining fun. I love Archer books anyway as his writing is always on point and he is a great storyteller. I’m looking forward to the next part of William's tale.
This story chronicles the life of a new Police Constable and the crimes he attempts to solve with his knowledge of art. A very good read, light hearted and I thoroughly recommend.
A good outing by the master Jeffrey archer. Another long spanning saga full of intriguing characters and easy to read. I fully recommend
Another cracking read by Jeffrey Archer. I’ve read many of his books and he is a fantastic storyteller. This, the first book in another series, makes me eager for the next instalment.
A strong story, I enjoyed getting to know the characters and the setting was authentic. Well worth a read.
You know you have read a story by a great author when you are sucked in from the beginning and spat out at the end feeling thoroughly entertained. Another great story from the mind of Jeffrey Archer.
This is the first book by Jeffrey Archer that I have ever read. This is mainly down to the fact that I can recall seeing Archer books on bookshelves of friends parents when I was young and for some reason, have decided that he's just not my cup of tea.
However, I really enjoyed this. There are some bits that are massively ridiculous and unbelievable but on the whole was a nice, easy read.
I may even look up some of his previous works.
