In true K.L. Slater fashion, this latest book of hers grips you right from the begging and doesn’t let go until you’re finished. I could not put this down! It didn’t feel like a psychological thriller until near the end. I was wondering at one point what category I would put this under, but as the truth behind everything starts to be unveiled, you realise that yup, this is a PT!
The two girls at the beginning and their actions made me want to cry, not for them, but for the poor old lady. I hate the mistreating of old people, even if someone just taunts or makes fun of them, it makes me really sad. They were young and hip once, and everyone gets old, it’s not something we choose. So just simply being old doesn’t mean they are open to abuse.
Saying all that I didn’t agree with the lynch mob that was out in force baying for the girls’ blood! They were just kids, and the ‘village’ were forgetting this! Also, the little thing called ‘innocent until proven guilty’! It really added to the desperation of the story, though. The girls really needed to break the vow of silence they had going on and speak up. It was quite frustrating them not talking, but this really built up the suspense.
I can’t say I figured out the truth or what had happened, but I did have my suspicions about a particular character that proved correct. The family was perfectly dysfunctional and felt very real and just how frustrating families can be.
Overall, another brilliant offering by Slater that draws you in, makes you feel involved and will not let you get any sleep until you’ve finished it!
Any mum would appreciate 5 minutes silence from their offspring but when Juliet and sister Chloe's two ten year old daughters are arrested and refuse to speak they are at a loss as to how to handle it. As everything begins to spiral out of control the sisters have to pull together while their instincts tell them to react in totally opposite ways.
This is a very enjoyable read, the families and other characters are well described and their reactions seemed realistic and edged with just enough panic to keep the tension high. Juliet's story is written in the first person while everyone else tells their tale in the third person as well as in flashback. All this is done in such a clear way that I didn't feel confused at all and the ending was skillfully done.
I was able to read an advanced copy of this book thanks to NetGalley and the publishers in exchange for an unbiased review and would recommend it to anyone who enjoys family dramas with a multiple viewpoint.
Amazing!! One of the best thrillers I have read this year. I have enjoyed all of this authors books and I think the author is highly underrated. This book should be at the top of the best sellers list. A must read!
A fast and enjoyable read where just one chapter can easily turn into 10. When I was reading it I knew they’d be a few twists and surprises but i must admit I didn’t guess them! The tension and surprises just kept on coming in this story and It was a pleasure to read. Thanks Bookoutre and K L Slater.
The horror of being a mother of a 10 years old daughter that’s been accused of cold blood murder along with her cousin/ best friend.
This book is definitely a major gripping psychological thrillers because there are so many layers to discover between the pages that you’re head will be spinning around. The nan is such a character, she always hears or listen to what’s convenient for her but pretends to have migraines and people seem just ignoring her.
The writing was good, the characters were well depicted and the story overall is one that people should read it because sometimes in families that seems normal, a lot of abnormal things happen.
A gripping thriller centered on two ten-year-old cousins accused of murder in a sleepy village where the court of local opinion is strong.
This story has twists and turns that compare to the best authors in the genre, and moves at a breakneck pace that leaves the reader gasping for more. A worthwhile summer read by any measure.
this author never disappoints I so enjoyed two sisters who s daughters are best friends who get accused of murder they have both made a pact to stay silent not saying no more. this book is about family s friends lies and deceit fans will so enjoy very gripping and twisty so recomend
This a tremendous thriller, well-written with fascinating characters and multiple plot twists. When two young girls, who are cousins, are taken into custody over the assault of an elderly lady, their mothers, who are sisters, are devastated. Alongside the main story, there are a number of interesting sub-plots involving family relationships and friendships, and lives are devastated. The revelations are powerful and the ending surprising. I loved it!

I absolutely could not put this book down! I read this book on one super hot day, and enjoyed every last bit. The book is full of suspense and keeps you guessing all the time. Just when you think that you know what is going on you are surprised yet again.
K.L. Slater has a great mind for telling a story and knows how to make twists and turns in the books. This one about 2 girls is especially riveting. I loved all the details from how the community treats everyone to the main character Juliet and all her emotions throughout the book.
I really enjoyed this book. I adored the story line and loved the main characters. I read this book in one sitting and would highly recommend this book.
I received a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review. Thank you NetGalley.

I really enjoyed this book and read it in one day! It held my interest, and there were twists and turns that I never anticipated. I even woke up in the middle of the night and instead of going back to sleep, I had to find out what was happening, so I finished the book! I am already looking forward to reading her other books. Thank you to NetGalley, K.L. Slater, and Bookouture for giving me a kindle copy of this book in return for an honest review.
What a pleasure to pick up the latest novel of one of your favourite authors and feel the instant connection to both the writing and the novel. The author writes in a punchy style that makes the books hard to put down and a relatively quick read. Normally 1 or 2 sittings for me. This one was no different and I devoured it very quickly turning the pages as quick as possible wanting to know more
Ten-year-old cousins Maddy and Brianna are arrested for a terrible crime and Maddy’s mother Juliet cannot believe it. How could her intelligent well behaved daughter be capable of committing such a crime. The local people are appalled by the incident and the two sisters lives are torn apart when they are faced with defending their accused daughters. To make matters worse the two cousins refuse to give their side of the story and the police fear the worse for the girls. Juliet knows that she needs to find answers to the events to save her daughter from further trauma and arrest. The two sisters have other troubles they must confront when the business starts to feel the strain and they must also unlock their own secrets that remain locked up and not spoken about.
Excellent read and highly recommended.
I would like to thank both Net Galley and Bookouture for supplying a copy of this novel in exchange for an honest review.
OH WOW WOW WOW…. KL Slater does it again… I’m absolutely dumbfounded and flabbergasted at the contents of this book, right yes I get that its fictional but ideas have to come from somewhere right??
Two cousins, Maddie and Brianna on a training day off from school are playing outside…. They’ve been invited over to an old lady’s house for lemonade and biscuits but things go horribly wrong…. They scare her by shouting in her ear “WAKE UP”, she jumps with such a start that she falls off the chair and bangs her head……
With the girls being arrested and both keeping silent, what is the truth, what happened to her, with the whole village and national press already gunning for their blood, can they get through to them to find out exactly what happened in the house and which one of them is responsible?
Their families are beside themselves with worry…. Juliet (Maddie’s mum) and Chloe (Brianna’s mum) are hoping against hope it is not their child but it had to be one of them right? With so many ghosts and secrets in these sister’s past, can they overcome them and support each other in this time of need….. Their parents (grandparents) seem to side with Chloe/Brianna over Juliet/Maddie, what are the family dynamics there and how could they so readily choose one granddaughter over another? A child expert therapist is called upon to help the girls.
A story full of lies, twisted family values, sibling rivalry…. A perfect psychological thriller that you will not want to put down…. Outstanding K.L. Slater
Many thanks to Netgalley and Bookouture for an advanced copy in exchange for my honest opinion.
This is my first time reading K.L. Slater book. I couldn't stop turning the pages to see what happened next. This story definitely is worth reading. I look forward to reading more books by the author.
