Due to a sudden, unexpected passing in the family a few years ago and another more recently and my subsequent (mental) health issues stemming from that, I was unable to download this book in time to review it before it was archived as I did not visit this site for several years after the bereavements. This meant I didn't read or venture onto netgalley for years as not only did it remind me of that person as they shared my passion for reading, but I also struggled to maintain interest in anything due to overwhelming depression. I was therefore unable to download this title in time and so I couldn't give a review as it wasn't successfully acquired before it was archived. The second issue that has happened with some of my other books is that I had them downloaded to one particular device and said device is now defunct, so I have no access to those books anymore, sadly.
This means I can't leave an accurate reflection of my feelings towards the book as I am unable to read it now and so I am leaving a message of explanation instead. I am now back to reading and reviewing full time as once considerable time had passed I have found that books have been helping me significantly in terms of my mindset and mental health - this was after having no interest in anything for quite a number of years after the passings. Anything requested and approved will be read and a review written and posted to Amazon (where I am a Hall of Famer & Top Reviewer), Goodreads (where I have several thousand friends and the same amount who follow my reviews) and Waterstones (or Barnes & Noble if the publisher is American based). Thank you for the opportunity and apologies for the inconvenience.
This wasn't what I expected - it was warm and encouraging, but maybe not that practically useful. Would gift to a teenager in my life.
Ever feel like giving yourself a kick in the ass?? This book is what you are looking for! It is basically one big wake up call for you to enjoy.
Part memoir, part an account of how society has and does treat women on account of gender. Some of these ways are hidden from view and others very apparent. Through the lens of her own experiences in life and in work, the author provides a commentary very heavily inspired by Mary Beard (whose accounts I love for the way she distills quite complex stories and ideas into a form that I can not only understand but also synthesise).
With a very healthy does of critique the author discusses coaching and coaching methods, suggesting alternatives to investing in a life coach (which are so far removed from a mentor or supporter).
I didn’t know anything about the author before reading this book, in fact I assumed that this would be a book written by a social media influencer based on the description. I have been so pleased to find out that this author has life experience behind her, the messages she shares have been developed over a few decades. Her wisdom and her wit work together to make the read enjoyable, informative and (most of all) helpful. I’m inspired to try new things with the thought that if I fail then I’ll just have to try harder the next time!
I received an egalley copy of this book from the publisher through netgalley.
Honest and in-depth advice for reaching your full potential. This advice is presented in easy to follow language that can be broken up and applied in pieces at a time.
Thank you to NetGalley and the Publisher for providing me with an early copy of this book to review. All opinions are my own and have not been influenced by this opportunity.
"The Rule Breaker's Guide to Step Up & Stand Out offers inspirational ideas and witty insights into what stops us from reaching our full potential'
This is pretty much what it is. It is very well written and I really enjoyed this book. Would definitely recommend!
I chose this book as encouragement as I write my own memoir. Initially I was inspired by the author’s gutsy background — as speaker, musician, performance poet, playwright. Hearing that her kick off event was a women in business panel in London added to the cachet too. Then I found her ideas and insights totally liberating. A heady mix of memoir, self-help and kick ass motivation!
