I absolutely loved this book! Riveting suspense. You have to carefully follow all the threads and things going on, but together they form a cohesive thriller of a novel. Unbelievably fabulous, highly recommend!
Following a home invasion that goes horribly wrong with Ava's young daughter getting shot, her husband being badly beaten and Ava herself ending up in the ER, it's up to her high school sweetheart, Nate, now the local sheriff to find answers. But when each of them harbours secrets, where do you start looking for clues?

I'm currently of work for a few days dealing with a horrible fibromyalgia flare up so I literally read this book in a day! It is very easy reading with a fast and exciting plot. Ava comes across as a likeable busy mum, and like us all, wants to know what's going on in her kids' lives but also trying to respecting their privacy. When their house is broken into and they are threatened, she wonders who is behind it and why? The story is enjoyable but a tad unbelievable towards the end. 3.5/5⭐
Thank you NetGalley for this advanced copy. I have read Sarah in the past and really enjoyed her books. There were a lot of twists and different relationships in this book I did not see coming. The author kind of leaves the ending up in the air so the reader's mind could go a couple different ways as to what will happen next. Good book! Very dark!
Didn’t want to put this down, brilliantly written with plenty of twist and turns, would definitely recommend.
The premise for this book was different and had me intrigued. When they say it is unputdownable, for this book it was absolutely true. I read this very quickly, desperately needing to know what was going to happen to the characters and why. Having read previous books by this author I was expecting a good story but I wasn't ready for this addictive roller coaster ride. I thought that early on I had it all worked out and I am happy to say that I was wrong. This is an extremely twisty thriller where it is hard to know who to trust.
It begins with Ava, who from the outside has the perfect life. A great big house, loving husband and fantastic kids. All of this changes when late one night they are attacked in their own home and Ava fights back. The him either invasion leaves her daughter in a coma and her family traumatised and broken. But it soon becomes clear that this was not random and that they were targeted. But why? Who would want to kill them? The family secrets all start to come out and Ava does not know who to trust.
Thanks to Hodder and Stoughton, Mullholland Books and NetGalley for my advanced copy of this book. All opinions are my own and are in no way biased
Here’s another book I read and enjoyed, In Her Eyes by Sarah Alderson. It kept me turning pages and I wasn’t sure what was going to happen or who I could trust. I like it when a thriller keeps me guessing. Sometimes I can figure out what is going to happen so when I can’t piece it all together or I do and I’m wrong… I’m happy. I want to be wrong and have the author keep me on my toes!
Synopsis:
Ava’s life is the kind other people envy: loving husband; great kids; beautiful house. Until the night that a violent home invasion plunges her world into chaos.
In the aftermath of the attack, Ava needs answers to two questions. Who has targeted her family? And why? But things aren’t adding up. She is starting to suspect that someone knows more than they are letting on. That everything she thought she knew about the people closest to her was a lie.
Ava needs to know what happened that night. And to do that she must decide who she can really trust. Because she’s about to discover that her family is in more danger than she ever imagined…
This book has some twists and turns and I really liked it. I might have gasped out loud a few times! If you are a fan of domestic thrillers, get a copy when it comes out on November 14, only $2.99 on Kindle!
This book was fast paced. Hard to put down. It flowed well and it was very well written. It caught hold of me and had me hooked from the start . I was literally on the edge of my seat reading this book.
The initial mystery of In Her Eyes caught my attention. Ava's polished life seemed almost perfect, though you could tell that it was about to topple from a high rooftop. Ava herself was not my favorite character. Some of her comments via internal dialogue were offensive; her political and left-wing commentary came so frequently that I almost put this on my DNF shelf. The only reason I kept reading was to find out what happened to June in the end. The final third of the book was super twisty -- almost to the point of ridiculous coincidence -- but overall it was an enjoyable read.
I went into In Her Eyes cold--I'd had it on my Kindle from NetGalley and couldn't remember which book is was--and pulled it up to read just a bit to see if I liked it. Welp, 24 hours later, I finished. It was a compulsive, compelling read. I loved Alderson's writing so much I immediately purchased her previous book on Kindle--that almost never happens for me. Stamp of approval.
Even knowing nothing about the premise I could see the intrigue piling up in the opening chapters--family members keeping secrets, lying. Then the home invasion hit and I was sucked in with no hope of escape. I read from 0 to 56% in a single night, got to 76% on the train to work, and finished on the way home. It's cliche, but when they say a book is unputdownable, this is what they mean. (I'm already flying through the book I bought, too.)
The character work is bang on. Ava is a typical domestic suspense thriller heroine in many ways: she's rich, living the life, with a seemingly perfect family. Things begin to unravel and she claws desperately to get her life back. But. I'm so accustomed to a character like this making stupid choices, or not fighting back (in the literal sense), and Ava surprised me. She can take care of herself, even when she's terrified. She fights back and defends herself in a way that is completely believable and satisfying. I was rooting for her and was never frustrated by her train of thought, her choices, the things she misses. (Because it's a thriller; of course there are late stage twists!)
Ava's children June, Hannah, and Gene felt believable/real and complex. When I looked up the author and found out she used to write YA, I wasn't surprised. I liked the side characters and dynamics explored--friendships, jealousy, but ultimately loyalty among girlfriends. Ava's husband is a rounded, twisty character. Medical personnel, cops, all the typical side characters worked well.
There were lots of red herrings and twists and things to keep me guessing. I figured out enough to feel clever, but not everything so as to be bored. The ending was satisfying and unsettling at the same time.
Honestly, she's a new favorite. Highly recommend for anyone who loves domestic suspense thrillers, especially one with a Southern California rich-ass-rich-people flair.
I received a free e-copy of In Her Eyes by Sarah Alderson from NetGalley for my honest review.
Ava has it all. She has the am amazingly handsome husband , two beautiful children and an amazing home. Things take a very quick and disturbing turn when their home is invaded and their daughter is in the hospital in a coma barely surviving.
Ava will stop at nothing to figure out who did this and why. A thrilling book filled with twists, turns and lots of secrets and lies.
This book has a lot of twists , that grab you and make you want to keep on reading. It will have you guessing till the end. This book covers a home invasion which is very common nowadays unfortunately.
4.5 stars. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It had a unique storyline which I loved and there were so many twists and turns in it. Very well written and unexpected ending! I would definitely recommend this book
I’m middle of the road/ratings on this one
It’s quite the story. It drags in some places and then throws so many twists at you that you will be dizzy. It also has too many coincidental and far fetched moments.
I was entertained by it nonetheless and did finish it. I’m still a bit stumped at the conclusion. I’m not sure the last bit needed to be added and actually made me like the story a bit less.
I did like the writing and characterization so I would try more by this author. Thanks to NetGalley, the author and Hodder & Stoughton for a copy in exchange for a review.
Ava appears to have it all: 2 beautiful daughters, a husband she adores, a spacious home. When Ava looks at other couples struggling, she thanks her lucky stars for the family she has. But when two masked burglars break into her home, all that changes.
Now her 12-year old daughter, June, is in a coma, barely living. And Ava feels like her world is falling apart around her. The lead detective on the case happens to be a high school fling of hers named Nate and Ava feels both comfort and uneasiness at being around him again. The burglars managed to get away after the brutal attack, and Ava wonders if they’ll come back for her family again.
But when the police start digging into Ava’s life, they discover that her husband has been far from truthful. Their financial situation is dire and he has every motive to be behind this burglary. Ava starts to wonder if she truly knows the man she married over 2-decades earlier, or could he be responsible for putting their innocent little girl in a life-threatening coma?
In Her Eyes is Sarah Alderson’s latest domestic thriller release. The start of this book had so much promise—I was hooked by the burglary and the secrets that start pouring out from Ava’s life. But toward the end of the book, things took too many unrealistic turns. I wanted better explanation and for the events to make some sort of sense. But unfortunately, I didn’t get that. I still enjoyed the book, but wish the ending had been executed better. 3/5 stars.
Thank you NetGalley, Mulholland Books and Sarah Alderson for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Talk about a thriller with twists and turns. In Her Eyes was an unputdownable, fast-paced domestic thriller with a dash of dysfunctional family drama. In Her Eyes certainly kept me entertained, and I enjoyed the story even when the plot twists became unrealistic and kind of crazy. I’ve let this book sit with me for awhile before writing the review, and I found I couldn’t remember some parts of it! I had to really think about what happened and what the characters did, so it didn’t make much of a lasting impression on me. But for what it was, I enjoyed reading it.
In Her Eyes is an exciting yet somewhat far-fetched roller coaster ride of a story. Think explosive blockbuster action movie rather than deep indie film. If you’re looking for a fun new suspense thriller to read, In Her Eyes will hit the spot.
This is a story about a family of five, Robert and Ava, and their three children Gene, Hannah, and June. They live quite well and comfortably in California, until their life is horribly shattered by a series of terrible events. It becomes very fast-paced and was a page turner as we all discover what is happening. The twists and turns were a bit cliched. This is a good beach or snowy weekend read.
This was a good thriller. Why are they being targeted and what is really going on.? This kept me guessing until the very end. Was so pleasantly surprised. Thank you NetGalley.
Ava seems to have the perfect life, Husband, great kids, lives in a big house with no money worries. Some of her friends are jealous of the life she lives. But everything is not as it seems. Her husband has been distant and has locked himself in his office. Her daughter has had Cancer but is now in remission and Stepson Gene lives in an apartment over the garage and smokes pot.
When one day Ava comes home to find Armed men in her house. Ava follows one of the men upstairs as he brings her daughter June with him. Ava has a gun and follows the man and June up the stairs. Ava thinks the worse but, in the commotion, June is shot.
When there is investigation to what happened. Not only that the Sheriff who is investigating is childhood sweetheart Nate. She also finds out that her husband is bankrupt.
In your eyes by Sarah Alderson is a gripping on your edge of your seat thriller. With lots of twists and turns and a surprising twist at the end that you didn’t see coming. This is a very good read.
A very engaging read with a heroine I could warm to. I was getting to the point where I was sick of reading books about women I hated for one reason or another and finally I was reading from the narrative voice of a ‘normal woman’. I’ve been steering clear of this genre for a while and now I feel I may have rediscovered a passion. Plenty of twists and red herrings to keep you guessing about what really went on on the night of the robbery, and a nice little twist towards the end too.
What an edge of your seat hold your breath psychological thriller with more twists and turns than the rollercoasters at Alton Towers….. this book will have you accusing everyone and thinking the worst of others…. Ava’s “perfect life” is turned upside down when intruders get into her house, her husband, Robert is held at gunpoint to lead one of the perpetrators to the safe along with their 11 year old daughter June (who is not long in remission from cancer, already been through so much at such a young age), with the other intruder making sure Ava behaves, she decides to fight back picking up the first thing she could find and cracking the man’s head and once he’s down, she runs up the stairs to where she saw June being taken….. next Ava remembers she is waking up in hospital and is told June is fighting for her life……….
A suspenseful well thought out thriller, with some red herrings thrown in to boot, how far would you go to protect your family? Strap yourself in and get ready for the fight of Ava’s life……Highly recommended.
