I really enjoyed this book, which is more of study in character and situation than a plot driven thriller. I like how right from the outset we know that we're in the middle of something between Karen and her husband Nick, that this is a fresh start and something /big/ happened before. Already I was sucked in and when it became clear that this fresh start is just barely papering over these cracks the intrigue builds - I really appreciated the character development in this novel as we begin to wonder exactly what is up with this couple, especially Nick. Overall, between this main drama, the new home, village and tensions with other characters this builds into a very good read. Thank you so much for the copy to read and review.
This was a bit of a slow burner for me. I enjoyed the concept of the book and was intrigued to find out how it was all going to pan out but wanted a bit more to happen.
I did think something sinister was going on with her husband Nick and I loved how he became the villain in my mind, strengthening my sympathy towards Karen. I adored her neighbour Cath and the lovely friendship they formed. I do enjoy reading books where there are a whole host of colourful characters and I felt like this book captured that beautifully, from Karen's London pals, Dave and Jude, to the local people in the hamlet.
If you enjoy family dramas then this book is ideal. It was beautifully written and the ending for me was just perfect.
Many thanks for my ARC
I enjoyed this book - maybe read on a Sunday afternoon as whilst its a nice story it does lack pace. I did enjoy it nonetheless
At the start of this book, there was a lot of suspense and intrigue in regards to why Nick and Karen have moved, and the strange goings on but as the book progresses i feel like it fell short in concluding these and became a little tedious and boring frankly. The ending was very lack lustre and i was disappointed in the last half of the book. I feel like a lot of the plot was forgotten and this made it hard to finish.
A beautifully crafted and well-written book. Although, I did find it a little slow and the narrative non-descript. Likeable characters, they just needed to be more alert.
I really did struggle to finish this.
I found the characters really frustrating and unbelieveable.
On top of this the story was just too slow.
Two stars purely because I did finish it.
Not for me.
Enjoyable, easy reading. The beginning seemed familiar to me, and I did have a slightly sinking feeling about the plight of the protagonist - expecting her to turn out unhinged or gaslighted - but the ending was a relief!
I was looking forward to some sort of domestic thriller, but it wasn't quite there.
The story of Karen and Nick, moving to the country to escape from her demons, and his cheating, had so many chances for more twists to occur, and some did, but they were left with the ends still loose.
The characters were great, the descriptions fantastic, but the story was lacking.
Many thanks to NetGalley and HQ for an ARC, in exchange for an honest review.
The move is an easy read, about a couple who are trying to save there marriage
I don't feel I connected with the characters
and don't feel this book will be one I remember
Thank you netgalley, Felicity Everett and HQ for allowing me to read and review this book
A great story!! This is a must read for thriller fans...super easy to read and full of surprises....go get yourself a copy!
I really struggled to get into The Move. I felt it was really slow to get going and did not grip me. I tried to persevere but gave up on it. Sorry not for me.
This story is based around Karen and her controlling characters. The characters were fascinating and written with such depth. Overall an enjoyable read.
New House. Fresh Start. Same Husband.
Karen has packed up her life and is making a move from London to an idyllic country cottage which her husband has painstakingly renovated for her.
A fresh start will make everything right, and in escaping London they are escaping their past or so they thought. But something is awry, breath taking by day, eerie by night. Now that Karen is cut off from from her friends and family she cant help wondering if her husband has plans of his own and history may be repeating itself.
This is the first book of Everetts I have read and I was pleasently surprised. Karen is a very realistic character. Someone I think we all have in our lives. She is battling a mental illness. Trying to save her marriage and keep her family together. Part of me got quite frustrated with her. Her eagerness to please everyone, most of all her husband Nick and how she always pussy footing around him.
There is parts of the book that appeared sinister and and has an element of suspense, however it is predominantly a book about a woman, her love for her family and ultimately doing what is right by you and putting yourself first.
The characters are relatable if a little annoying which I think was part of their individual personalities and at times the book is slow moving with no real crescendo but I suppose it has a happy ending in a way and you can sort of breath a sigh relief for the main character.
3 out of 5 stars
I found the story didn’t flow
Seem to jump from one thing to the next and left confused at times. To be honest, I’m still not sure what happened in the book.
After reading this book I thought it was better than I had expected it to be. It started off slow and some things didnt make much sense but once I was into it, it started to get a bit better. The characters werent great though. I found them irritating at times. There was a good storyline to it and I wasnt expecting the ending at all
This book was fantastic! Highly anticipated and well worth the wait! The characters were rich and believable and it was thrilling to take this journey with them.
I’m in two minds about this book; the descriptions, setting and characters we’re all written so well, it was easy to read and follow.
However, the story itself didn’t hook me in enough, I kept on feeling it could have given more, especially the ending. There was lots of superficial side lines and too much scratching the surface for me.
I received this book from Netgalley in exchange for an honest, indepedent review.
"Karen has packed up her life and is making The Move. She’s on her way to the idyllic country cottage which her husband has painstakingly renovated for her. They’re escaping the London bustle and the daily grind. And they’re escaping their past. A fresh start in a beautiful, peaceful village. It will be different here, right?
"But something is awry. The landscape, breathtaking by day, is eerie by night. The longed-for peace and solitude is stifling. And the house, so artfully put together by her husband, has a strange vibe. Now that Karen is cut off from her old friends and family, she can’t help wondering if her husband has plans of his own, and that history might be repeating itself."
Although the book was well written with great descriptions, I was disappointed by the story overall. It was no the dark, psychological novel I thought it would be: more of a novel around domestic drama with not a lot really happening.
The characters were interesting and well portrayed, but I didn't really connect with them, and found the book very slow and hard to get into.
Karen is making the move with Nick, her husband and moving to the country to give their marriage another try following Nick’s affair and her breakdown. They have bought an idyllic cottage that Nick has renovated and are moving away from London and where Nick had his affair. They are looking at having a quieter life and getting their marriage back on track. Nick has taken to their new life and surroundings and is embracing their new way of life, but it’s taking longer for Karen to adjust.
They get involved with village life and their neighbours through, quiz nights and charity auctions but Karen is suspicious of Nick and his flirting. She also has eerie moments where she is convinced that someone is watching the house from the hill. The landscape, breathtaking by day, is eerie by night.
She does make a close friend in the village, Cath the horticulturalist who is a lovely down to earth character who liked a drink and got sad on the fourth anniversary of her girlfriend’s death.
There are a lot avenues we are taken down and the turn out to be cul de sacs. There is the person Karen on the hill. The kiln being messed with. The Son, Ethan, turning up and the relationship changing very rapidly. Nick’s tyre being slashed.
The book looks at relationships, primarily Karen and Nick’s and Ethan, their son and Nick’s. All the neighbours relationships are looked at as they come into contact with Karen and Nick and form friendships and opinions. Karen is recovering after Nick’s affair, so there is an element of ‘am I imagining this?’ when things happen that others can’t see, or don’t think are strange.
This is a story that if you like village life, summer fêtes, will he,won’t he cheat again, is she imagining things, you’ll love this, for others it doesn’t quite deliver.
I enjoyed this book, felt the characters were believable and my feelings towards them changed at times throughout the book. It kept my interest and stirred different emotions towards each incident that happened. I did feel it ended a bit short/fast. I personally needed Karen to stand up to Nick and not just leave behind his back. I felt there was a few unanswered questions and unfinished business as such. However I did enjoy reading this book.
