Nicely done....between witches, magic, werewolf and incorporating LGBTQ, in delightful and amazing graphics novel. can leave you wanting more....
This was a lovely and sweet graphic novel. Tam is a wolf shifter who is non-binary (they). They are trying to stop a demon and comes across their old crush, Nova. I really loved Tam's sense of humor.
Nova is a witch who is also queer and hard of hearing. She is doing an apprenticeship with her two Nana's. I really loved Nova's Nana's. They were everything you would want in a grandma.
Together Nova and Tam work to figure out how to stop a demon. Along the way, they rekindle their relationship and finally admit their feelings for each other.
I loved everything about this comic. It was beautifully written and drawn. The characters are wonderful and captivating. I will most likely buy this comic when it comes out because of how much I loved it. I really hope they write more comics about Nova and Tam.

This was so cute! Mooncakes is my first YA comics but I fell in love with it straight away. It's was such an entertaining and easy read, I didn't want it to end. I really hope this will the the first of many adventures for Nova and Tam!
The characters are so charming, it's impossible not to love them and the art itself was very well-done. I really appreciated the representation; it's very rare to have queer, nonbinary and hard-of-hearing characters. It was like a breath of fresh air and I enjoyed it immensely.

Mooncakes is a lovely story about a witch and a werewolf in love, fighting off demons, cooking with their grandmas and smooching on the side. It's cute, it's pure and it's just a delight to read!
I loved the characters in this story so much. I loved their personalities, but I also loved their appearance. The drawing style was very apt and eye catching for me. I was in love with how the characters were portrayed--from their outfits to their hair colours to the backgrounds! Everything was so right!
The story was pretty simple and had nothing too radical in it. But I think it complemented everything else about the book and it got across the values and the messages that the authors wanted to get across so I have no complaints as such.
My favourite element in the story was the whole family dynamic that was going on. I loved that the grandmas were also the main characters. I loved that there were TWO GRANDMAS!!! I loved that Nova's family was a huge part of her life and her personality, as a result and the same went for Tam. I always love it when cultures and magic come together to make something beautiful and I definitely saw that happen in this novel. So yay!
I really really enjoyed reading it and I can't wait for the finished copy to be released! (it's coming out in October WAAAHH), so that I can get myself a physical copy of the book! Would totally recommend this novel to literally anyone. It's pure and cute and beautiful, y'all! READ IT!!!
Nova spends her days working at her grandmother’s bookshop where she spends much of her time learning more about witchcraft, loaning out spell books, and investigating supernatural incidents. When a friend reports strange activity in the woods, Nova jumps on the case and discovers that her childhood friend and crush, Tam, is back in town and battling a horse demon while in their werewolf form. Determined to help Tam figure out how to use her werewolf magic to defeat the horse demon, they put their heads together and start to realize their old feelings for one another.
This is such cute and heartwarming story. It has a great cast of characters with a supernatural element that is not overpowering for those who don’t favor the paranormal genre. Nova is a Chinese American teenage witch who is mourning the loss of her parents while navigating a world that is not usually friendly toward people who are hard of hearing or deaf. Tam is a non-binary Chinese American teenage werewolf who feels alone in the world after leaving home and living on the streets for years. When their paths cross again, they fall back into the comfortable friendship they once had and rekindle the romantic feelings that were left
I love Nova’s relationship with her grandmothers as well as her friend, Tatyana, and how quickly she picks up her friendship with Tam. The story is set up nicely and the artwork is beautiful. It really lends itself to the story, especially when magic is used. I also love how this story is organic and the pieces fall into place without it feeling like it’s coming out of left field.
While I love the story, I do have a few questions, like why it’s called Mooncakes when they’re not integral to the story and only appears once. I also want to know what happened to Nova’s parents, how and when Tam became a werewolf, and the story behind Terry’s bird head. These are the things that we need more information on. Otherwise, it’s a great story and I plan on checking out the author’s future work.
This was so cute and previous and adorable and basically perfect. The colors are vibrant, yet somehow muted at the same time, which was wonderful. Some of the muted tones made me think of fall with the leaves changing and the orange sunsets.
I love, love, love, love that Nova and Tam were childhood best friends and got to explore not only being friends again, but if they can be something more than friends. Spoiler alert: they can. The romance was organic and beautiful.
Almost all the main characters are queer. Nova's badass lesbian grandmothers were giving me life. They actually had their own agency as characters and did magic, which is so rare to see in literature. Their love with Nova was present in every panel, and their support for Nova's final decision at the end was super supportive.
Readers will love to see all the queer rep in the book, plus Nova uses hearing aids.
I really, really hope we get a sequel.
The graphics were so cute? I loved them! About 3/4 through the color stops in the books so that really took away from enjoyment, it was hard to tell between characters once this happened. Great story to go along with representation. I love that we have a character with hearing aids and a non-binary character! This is witchy and you'll certainly love it.
This was a cute and queer romance tale with a wide range of diversity and inclusivity represented, plenty of witchy shenanigans, and a lovely art style.
I don't typically like insta-love, and while I understand that there was technically already an established relationship, there wasn't enough background from any point of view to make it feel like it was anything other than instantaneous love. I feel that if the mutual background was fleshed out a touch more, it would lend more substance to the romantic aspect.
I enjoyed the familial aspects also, and would have loved to see more day-to-day magic used (although any magic is fine in my book!). Overall I feel the tone of this book, while a cute and easy read, would be well suited to readers much younger than I. Given the publication date, I believe this will make the perfect autumnal/Halloween read for many teens.
This was pretty cute! Also, my first brush with reading something that involved non-binary character!
It has witches, werewolves, magic, queer representation with diversity rep which makes it pretty wholesome!
The art work is pretty great! Was very much 'Sabrina- the teenage witch' kind of vibe!
If you know me, you know that I was firstly draw to pick this book because of its cute cover. 😍 Then, I read the words "mooncakes", "witch" and "wolf" and I immediately knew that I had to read this graphic novel. If you are looking for tons of diversity (for example, Tam is non-binary and Nova needs a hearing aid), a supportive family with two adorable Nanas and a magical world filled with spells and fantastic creatures, then this graphic novel is definitely for you.
I do get the hype with this graphic novel. It has everything i should love, witchcraft, books, autumn and diversity, however i felt it didn't quite stand up as well as others Graphic novels i have read.
I did think the story was overall pretty good, i just felt it could have been a little more flow between the panels.
Mooncakes was such a cute and wholesome story, with lovely artwork and great representation, however, I do wish the plot and the worldbuilding were more developed.
This was a case of 'it's not you, it's me.' Looking at all the other early reviews - practically all 4- and 5-stars - I'm clearly in the minority here. A non-binary main character and a hard of hearing main character were great to see, but I was somehow bored with a plot that revolved around a cult and a horse demon.
4.75 stars - I adored this graphic novel! The illustrations are adorable and I really like the color palette the artist used. The overall plot is pretty simple and straightforward, but it's still pretty awesome. This is a queer, YA fantasy story featuring two, queer Asian-American protagonists. Nova is a hard of hearing, witch living with her two grandmas, and Tam is a werewolf who just got back in town, lured by an evil cult trying to use them and their wolf magic.
This has an extra-cute non-binary/female, friends to lover relationship, lots of magic, family and friends support and unconditional love, books, magic cats and autumn feels.
The release date of this title is in October which fits the mood of this graphic novel perfectly. Mooncakes is coming out right on time for my birthday, and I have already pre-ordered my finished copy. I highly recommend if you're looking for a cute, heartwarming read!
I received a free copy of this title from Lion Forge via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
I was offered to review this book in exchange for an honest review and I have to say i really enjoyed it. It's beautifully written and features a diverse set of main characters which I also enjoyed. If you love spellbinding magic, romance and family stories, you will love reading this. 5 out of 5 stars
Holy adorableness, Batman.
I'd heard bits and pieces about this book after Book Expo, nothing too concrete. But when I saw it up for grabs on Netgalley, I dived over furniture to make sure I got to read it.
How do you say no to a non binary werewolf and a hearing aid-wearing queer witch falling in love after having been each other's childhood crushes? I mean COME ON. This book was written for the book community. Hand delivered, with love, by these creators.
Nova works in the shop of her two Nanas (grandmothers). They seem to specialize in those hard to find magical books that people might travel the extra mile to get their hands on. She's sweet and friendly and not a little bit sassy. One night, she's investigating strange things her best friend Tat told her about, and she stumbles across an enormous white wolf fighting a....erm....demon horse.
Turns out this wolf is her childhood best friend and crush, Tam, back in town due to nefarious happenstance where they were living with their family.
With the help of Nova and her family, Tam must face this demonic Mister Ed and put the demons beind them, literal and physical.
This is seriously THE SWEETEST HOLY CRAP. I can think of people who really need to own this when it comes out. And the artwork is GORGEOUS. It wasn't even complete in this ARC version and all I wanted was the ability to color in the pages, because the incomplete line work is still amazing to look at.
I can't wait to see the final finished product. Brava.
This was quite an interesting story and unlike anything I've read before (and that's a good thing). The story is from the point of view of Nova, a witch who is hard-of-hearing, who lives with her grandmas (also witches) and is trying to figure out what is going on in the woods next to one of her best friend's baby sitting homes. It turns out there is a demon in the woods, and also involved is Tam, a non-binary werewolf who was also one of her childhood best friends (the three of them grew up together). Her best friend knows about all the magic, werewolf, spirits stuff, but is a complete scientist and likes to try to explain everything with science. Together, all 5 of them have to work together to figure out what's going on in their town. I found the story to be very interesting, and I liked the graphics too, although the version I have is not completely colored in near the end. Also, I don't know if this is a function of the ebook, but the resolution of the graphics is also on the lower side. I'm hoping that in the final release, all of these things will be a non-issue.
There was much I loved about this story, especially the kick ass grandmothers, but also the romance between Tam and Nova is very sweet. This is a graphic novel definitely worth checking out!
Special thanks to NetGalley, the publisher, and the author for this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Mooncakes is a cute and charming book with a diverse set of characters. Although the plot is a bit predictable, I adored the magic in here. I do wish there was more depth to the magic and history of the characters. I think this would've been great as a series. Perfect for middle-grade.
I have heard so much hype about this book and for good reason! I was unaware about Mooncakes and its previous life on Tumblr prior to reviews of the physical copy ARC coming out.
If I had to compare Mooncakes to anything, it wouldn’t be to other comics or books but to a feeling. It feels like the first autumn morning you wake up to crisp air and you’re able to pull on your favorite sweater and settle into a spiced cup of something warm. It feels like meeting up with a friend at a cafe to both catch up and reminisce on all the good times. It feels truly… cozy.
I was immediately drawn in by the foreword with Suzanne and Wendy’s story of writing Mooncakes together when they were separated physically as a way to connect. Being in a very long distance relationship, I can relate to that desire to build something beautiful and warm in a space that untended can feel so infinitely bleak. What Walker and Xu created in this story absolutely accomplishes that and more.
Mooncakes follows a young witch (Nova) and her childhood werewolf friend turned partner (Tam) through a story woven with romance, mystery, and magic. Nova is exploring and growing her magic at the same time that Tam is growing their confidence and defending their identity in a world that wants more than anything to undermine it. The optimism that radiates from the pages in Mooncakes is truly infectious and I wanted nothing less than the best for Nova and Tam. The unexpected showstealers of the book are Nova’s grandmothers who are magically adorable and, in a place the illustration truly shines in this book, always have mouthwatering food at the ready. Another art highlight is Nova’s constant superb autumnal fashion looks which have me begging for a Mooncakes illustrated lookbook.
I feel like we have only gotten a slice of goodness out of this wonderful world and I can only hope we will eventually get to follow Nova on her apprenticeship and see where her magic leads her.
Overall, Mooncakes serves up a wonderfully cozy read that I’d recommend any time but especially on a cool October night with a hot mug of your favorite autumnal beverage.
Thank you very much to Netgalley and the publisher for an ARC of this book.
Cute, but not my cup of tea. Didn't like the main characters or the plot for what matters. I did like the art, well done and soo cute, but this is not enougth to sustain a book.
