Adorable! This title includes a great range of early literacy elements, while maintaining an engaging and identifiable story. The illustrations and story content lend themselves to so many great questions and teaching moments. This would be such a treat for young eyes and ears...and so would making an apple cake after! A must have!

This is a very beautifully illustrated picture book of a child gathering ingredients to make an apple cake, and being thankful to all of nature that provides.

It is a sweet thoughtful book, and the recipe at the end reads as though it would be very good, although I would probably buy the almond flour rather than grinding it up myself.

I like the simple act of being thankful, to not only the apples, but to the people around her who helped make the cake.

Thanks to Netgalley for making this book available for an honest review.

Beautiful illustrations, rhyming text, and a message about gratitude make this a perfect read for young children especially if read around Thanksgiving time. I read this book to my five year old daughter who happens to look a lot like the little girl who is gathering items to make an apple cake. I could tell that my daughter was picturing herself as the little girl gathering items for the cake. She even told me later, "My favorite part was that the little girl was thankful for her family just like me." I feel like other young children will also be able to relate to the message of gratitude in this story and will easily be able to pick up on the repetitive words and rhymes of the book allowing them to chime in and read when the book is read again. If I were to make one suggestion for the book, I would have it include white flour instead of ground hazelnuts or almond flour. Then optional nuts could be thrown into the cake if the baker wants a nutty flavor. The recipe is written to look like it's for families to make with their little ones (it even tells you how to have a child cut an apple safely). Having unusual ingredients such as almond flour may turn some families away from purchasing the book because they know they won't have all of the ingredients to make the recipe. Families could easily find another recipe for apple cake on the Internet that matches their pantry closet (which is what I will do) so it really is a non-issue, but just something to think about. Thanks to NetGalley for providing me with an ARC of Apple Cake: A Gratitude. All thoughts expressed in this review are my honest opinions of the book.

A quintessential example of how the simplest messaging and artwork can make a beautiful, moving, and effective narrative. Brava.

A simple rhyming read that follows the journey of a little girl gathering all the ingredients to make an apple cake with her family. Along the way she expresses her gratitude to nature and to those she loves.

The illustrations by Genevieve Godbout are peaceful and match the tone of gratitude throughout the the book. Young readers will probably enjoy searching for the apple cake ingredients on every page.

Overall, I think this is a lovely book that will help children appreciate all that nature provides.

Such a beautifully crafted book - a rhyming tale, endearing illustrations and a recipe for an apple cake at the end!

Sweet and simply told, Dawn Cosey has written a delightful poem about being grateful to the wonderful world around you.

With warm and captivating illustrations by the extremely talented Genevieve Godbout, this is a picture book that will be appreciate by both young and old, and one that nobody will be forgetting anytime soon.

ARC Copy...Beautiful illustration that give a warm feel plus narrative that points not to be thankful in general but also how work and people are in involved in simple Apple Cake and we should be thankful for them.

Even though I read the book and of course know the title, I still didn't realize they were making apple cake until the end. 🤦🏼‍♀️🍎🍰😅 (It's maybe been a long day.)
Apple Cake was a simple beautiful rhyming book that I thing really young children would enjoy for storytime, bedtime, or anytime you would like to remind/teach children about gratitude. The Apple Cake recipe addition was the cherry (apple?) On top.

***Thank you to Quarto Publishing for providing me with a review copy.***

In today's busy world, many of us take the simple pleasures for granted. How often do we thank the world for its bounty and resources?
This gorgeous and beautifully illustrated book show us a young girl gathering ingredients and thanking everything and everyone along the way.
From the flowers to the farmers, the sun and the rain, and the "earth beneath our feet", she makes sure all are thanked for what they have given her.
We follow the girl on her path with her dog following her along the way. Each page is a painting that could adorn the walls of a gallery- stunning artwork!
A perfect book to teach children thankfulness and joy in the simple ingredients that come together to make a delicious apple cake.
The addition of the recipe at the back makes my mouth water- it is one I will definitely try to make.

Enjoy this book, it is truly special!

A girl and her dog seem to be just exploring the outside world, but it turns out the whole family is on a mission, and hers is only a part of it – yes, they're gathering ingredients for a jumbo apple cake for the whole lot of them to enjoy. Which is why in a lovely rhyme, but just in a few words per double-page spread, we get a prayer of thanks. Well, the subtitle says it's a "gratitude", but I didn't know that as a noun, so non-denominational, universally-acceptable prayer it is. We then get a recipe for the family to use, for our own apple cake, which shows that even in the small detail care has been taken over this book. I loved the idea of trying to peel a full ribbon of apple skin off in one go, which is what us adults do all the time anyway, so now children have been inspired to give it their best too. (I won't go into how stupid the idea of using 'cup' as a measurement is – how many apples is a 'cupful' – one, in a world where we don't have 60oz cups as standard). As for detail, it's certainly in the artwork too, which shows a wonderful style of illustration. More importantly still, perhaps, is the sense of the words as working as a harvest festival/apple festival/Thanksgiving text, which will definitely not get just the one use, but turn up to be enjoyed annually. One that is definitely for the family/school/institution library, then.

Thank you NetGalley for an ARC of this book!

What a wonderful book!! It is almost a prayer of gratitude fot kids. Often in children's books, gratitude is an underlying or a moral. However, Apple Cake is straightforward in helping kids be appreciative in our consumer world.

The illustrations are breathtaking! I especially appreciate the recipe at the end. This would be a wonderful fall read!!

Apple Cake is a sweet rhyming picture book in which a child expresses gratitude for all of the people and things that go into making a tasty dessert. Beautiful illustrations highlight the gentle rhyming text, which actually has very nice rhythm. But there's one thing that really bothers me about the book, and it kind of irked me enough to affect my enjoyment. And that one thing is the grammar.

The way the verse is written out in the synopsis is not the way it's written out in the book. The book's text is full of comma splices and run-on sentences. It drove me nuts, because it could have been so easily fixed. Instead of

Thank you, hedge,
thank you, tree.

Thank you, flower,
thank you, bee.

it could've read

Thank you, hedge.
Thank you, tree.

Thank you, flower.
Thank you, bee.

and if it had read that way, I probably would've enjoyed this one a lot more. Nobody's going to notice these issues when the book is read aloud, but I still hate to see messed-up grammar in children's books.

There's a recipe at the end for apple cake, complete with a convoluted method for letting kids help cut the apples (which I would recommend skipping if you want to get the cake made before midnight). I never know what to think about recipes included in children's books. Do they really turn out? I have no idea (and since this one calls for eggs, this vegan's not about to try it). Still, having a recipe might be a plus for some people.

The overall message of gratitude is lovely. Paired with the cute illustrations, it's almost enough to make this book one I would wholeheartedly recommend. This is the second rhyming picture book I've read recently that takes liberties with grammar. That's just something I can't get behind; children are still in the process of learning language, and getting artsy will only serve to confuse them.

Thank you, Frances Lincoln Children's Books - Quarto Publishing, Dawn Casey, and Net Galley for the e-ARC of this book, for review. My review will be published on Goodreads and Amazon as well.

I don't usually request children's books for review, but thanks to this gorgeous book, that is about to change. I might even be let down, because this book right here, is just perfection. It deserves every single available star in its rating. 5 stars!!!

I loved the simplicity of the story, the rhythmic words, the absolutely STUNNING artwork, and of course- the message. I love the idea of teaching children to have gratitude for every little thing. Surely, children can appreciate their beloved apple cake, especially if it's as delicious as the included recipe appears (nice touch!). But to feel appreciation for the farmers, who tend the chickens, who lay the eggs- this teaches children a way to apply gratitude to other areas of life, beyond a cake. Gratitude is what this world needs.

I truly love this book, and I'm glad I reviewed it. I do plan to buy this book when it publishes on September 24, 2019 for my toddlers.

This recipe for Apple Cake is preceded by an absolutely beautiful illustrated catalogue of ingredients. Dawn Casey’s book gives thanks for everything that goes into making this apple cake: bees for the honey; trees for the apples and nuts; farmers, cows, and hens for milk and eggs; fire for heat to bake; friends and family to help and share. Each page provides readers with the opportunity to take a step back and fully appreciate each piece of a whole, to be thankful for and recognize the things that come together to create something more, and follows it up with a recipe for what appears to be a delicious Apple Cake. The illustrations by Geneviève Godbout follow an adorable young girl in bright yellow galoshes, accompanied by her beautiful dog, as she collects ingredients for this cake. They’re so vibrantly warm and inviting that I wish I could breathe in the fresh air, feel the rain, smell the baking apples, and join the family and friends at the end for cake.

Thanks to Frances Lincoln Children’s Books of Quarto Publishing Group for granting my wish, and to NetGalley, for both the provided e-ARC and the opportunity to read this book. (My wish now is that I had some apples for that recipe!) My review is honest, unbiased, and voluntary. #NetGalley #AppleCakeAGratitude

A really Lovely illustrated book.
Eye catching pictures and colours that will hold a child’s imagination.

It’s full of gratitude and thanks for everything no matter how big or small.

We all know that pictures in children’s books speak more than the words themselves at times.

A parent or adult reading this to a child will have plenty to chat about
