I love Lex, she is one of my most favourite characters ever, this book had me hooked from start to finish, hurry up and write the next one Asia, I need to know how Lex coped with this new development
This author has the most brilliant imagination and brings this into his writing
I loved the cover of this book
I was enthralled and didn’t want to put it down
An excellent book
I LOVED this. Wildly entertaining with a brilliantly witty main protagonist and a banging good story to boot.
There’s edge of the seat moments, hilarious asides, glitter and a bit of glamour and all the joys of juggling parenthood and professional life.
If you are a parent you will relate even if you are not a secret government assassin, the difficulties are the same. This, like Killing It, is a brilliant hybrid of espionage and family drama with an edgy, involving prose that will have you laughing out loud one moment and clutching your head the next.
Cleverly plotted and engagingly humerous this is a book to savour. Forget Killing Eve, Lex Tyler is the far superior creation and I hope for many many more novels to come.
Highly Recommended.
I loved the first book featuring Lex Tyler and I loved this one.
It's gripping and entertaining, full of humour and fast paced.
There's a lot of character development and the plot is well crafted.
I look forward to reading other books by this author.
Highly recommended!
Many thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this ARC, all opinions are mine.
Lex Tyler of Platform Eight returns in Asia MacKay's The Nursery which like the first book in the series is a funny and very different secret agent novel.
Secrets are being leaked and Tyler, along with her colleagues, has to identify the traitor before they assassinate China's Minister of Commerce.
So what makes Tyler different? Well not only is she a secret agent and very good in a tight spot but she is also a mum to a two year old daughter which takes work/ life balancing to a whole different level.
The author uses the daily life of being a parent to bring humour and a unique twist to the story telling.
The book moves along at a decent pace and kept me interested throughout and us one I would recommend
I love the concept of these books and there are some really funny moments. Original, witty and fresh!
This is the second book about Lex. She is a mother of a boisterous two year old and is a secret agent, whose husband is unaware of her real job. Personally I enjoyed the first book in the series more, this one seemed to go back over the premise for the book a little too much. It is however a reasonably paced book and a good summer read. Eight, the secret department that lex works for is on lock down, inflation by an enemy is imminent and they have a Chinese government official to look after and to prevent her assassination.
Lex is trying to balance bringing up her two year old daughter Gigi, which is hard enough with her tantrums and demands, working full time and trying to find time for her husband. But when you are a secret agent and you cannot tell you’re husband what you do at work, well that just complicates things more!!
“Mother. Secret agent. Two roles. Two lives”
There is a leak and some of the agents covers have been blown. Lex and her team are working on uncovering the snake. They have three suspects and Lex’s role is to get to know their partners, with the fake Family Initiative, where they meet up to talk about family life and hoping they may reveal secrets about their spouses.
This series just gets better. Lex is a great character and I love her partnership with Jake. There are great comedy moments including Lex punching the Easter Bunny.
Would love this to be made into a Netflix series.
Looking forward to the next book In this series and finding out what is going to happen to Lex. You left us on a cliff hanger I cannot take the suspense!!
Thank you to Netgalley for my copy on exchange for a review.
To begin with I wasn't sure about this book. The characters seemed 'light' and I could only see a good old-fashioned 'spy/security' yarn. But I persevered and as I progressed I realised what a good book this is and I did find myself becoming more and more involved with the primary character
I think the 'baddie' was fairly easy to work out but nevertheless it is a clever and very worthwhile read.
I loved Killing It and this book is brilliant as well. I laughed a lot. There is so much that every mother can relate to. Anyone who has seen toddlers in action will definitely understand. I liked the characters and how Lex copes with everything in life. I hope there are more books to come.
Thank you to Netgalley for my copy.
Pretty much the same concept as Killing it- kiss ass mum who is a special ops agent during day and nobody in the house notices. If you liked Killing it, you will probably like this.
Oh how I enjoyed this book. Serious action and espionage but also laugh out loud funny. Disabling a gunman with glitter was brilliant. All the true fears of the working mother are here (whatever your job) along with the beautifully described overwhelming love for your child. It also truly captures why female friendships are so important. More soon please.
I received this ARC for an honest review and that’s what I’ll provide.
I’m not going to lie I struggled through this 2nd book of our super spy Lex and her worries of juggling motherhood, marriage and being a government rat trying to keep the country safe.
I’m a mother too and I felt weighed down by all her introspection, don’t get me wrong I don’t know a parent who doesn’t question her role and how to be a good parent but she is a strong woman I’d have hoped a bit more strength dealing with the insipid nursery woman and helping out the other mothers more.
I know we all fall down in our lives and yes we learn to pick ourselves back up.
I was pulled back into the story closer to the end and enjoyed seeing some old faces from the previous book show up. I will no doubt follow Lex into yet more adventures she just needs to be as ruthless a mother as she is an agent!!
I found this book banal, boring and bemusing from the start and gave up a third of the way through. With so many "celebrity" endorsements I really did think it was going to be a gem of a book but have concluded I am the odd one out and am very grateful for being so.
I do so hope that there are characters like Lex in the real world of espionage defeating their enemies with glitter and crisps. Asia Mackay takes a serious plot and adds enough humour that it’s fun to read. I’m sure any readers with kids who have gone through nursery will appreciate it even more than I did. (What do parents do with all the ‘artwork’ that is sent home?) I’m really picky about comedy and there’s much that I just don’t find funny but I liked this and Killing It. The ending suggests there may be more to come in this series and I hope that’s the case.
Lex Tyler and her fellow Rats at Platform 8 (the secret Secret Service) are on the trail of a shadowy network that have infiltrated MI5 and MI6 and blown the cover of a number of agents. Only their team are working on this, all the others are in shutdown until it' resolved. Lex also has to work with a fellow parent from her daughter's nursery - Frederick, their link with MI6 on the investigation. Not only is he a fellow agent, he's also the nursery's resident Hot Dad, which adds an extra complication when things with her husband Will are starting to struggle a little.
It's as much fun as Killing It was! It's fast paced, and the difficulties of combing nursery drop-offs with life as a secret agent are both funny and well observed. Is that man slumped at the coffee shop table, not even reading his phone, a suspicious threat or merely a hungover dad wishing his child would stay longer in the play area? Can the Facebook network of mums be used to capture a missing Ghost agent? Who is more terrifying - top assassin Lex, her toddler daughter or Miss Yvonne, ruler of the Montessori nursery? It's not perfect, I'd have liked more of Will and Lex's partner Jake felt a bit sidelined this time, and more than a cameo of Lex's friends from Killing It would be nice, but hopefully they'll all appear next time.
Lex is back! Surviving the terrible twos of her precious daughter, Gigi, and struggling with marriage and saving the world! How does a mum who is a spy keep it all in hand? The bigger threat is the safety of the spy’s and a leak in the platform. Using a cover story with the father of one of Gigi’s friends, can Lex save them all once again?
Wow wow wow! killing it was such a good book and then this one topped it! I have such a love for these characters it has to have a sequel soon. Thank you to netgalley and the publishers and Asia for this arc in exchange for my honest review.
