I’ve been a fan of the Orphan X books from the very beginning so was really excited to receive this new one from NetGalley as a review copy.
Our hero Orphan X aka Evan Smoak, The Nowhere Man, is about to undertake his last mission. He is planning to retire and live a normal life once it is completed.
Max Merryweather is his new client whose life is in extreme danger. His cousin Grant, a forensic accountant, entrusted Max with an envelope and instructed Max to give it to an investigative news reporter if anything happened to him.
Max is estranged from his wife and is very down when he hears of Grant’s sudden death. He plans to do as he was asked but then some really evil people start to pursue him too.
Orphan X, trained by the government in a secret programme, but now atoning for all the deaths he has caused by helping others comes to Max’s aid.
However this last case is much more complicated than it first appears and every time it seems that Evan has got rid of one evil assassin, several more who are higher up the conspiracy chain, suddenly appear.
This is indeed a complex case and fortunately Evan has help from former agent and teenage genius hacker Joey.
This is a great read and the action rarely slows down. There seem to be a lot of nasty characters for Evan and Joey to eliminate.
Both show their softer side when Evan rescues a dog. Dog is given to Joey who is not keen at first but then gradually warms to him.
Evan is also still in love with his neighbour Mia but does little about it as she is a DA and would have to have him arrested if she knew the truth about his life.
This was a great read from start to finish and as usual the author leaves the reader with a cliffhanger which means I will be desperate to get my hands on the next book in the series. I recommend this to all action thriller fans and even if you haven’t read the previous books you will still enjoy this one.
