Clever, twisty and surprising, I devoured this gripping novel in under twenty-four hours. Told in three parts, a different woman from the Gregory family narrates each one, offering us a glimpse behind the curtain of this seemingly ordinary family as secrets are revealed and lives are shattered irreparably. Opening with an intriguing prologue that left me on tenterhooks, this was a rollercoaster ride that didn’t end until we reached the jaw-dropping final page that sent a shiver down my spine.
This sinister and unputdownable domestic thriller will have you questioning just how well you know your family and wonder what secrets they might be hiding. Behind the warm smiles of this family is an undercurrent of obsession, lies, betrayal and distrust. Someone is out for vengeance. But who? Everyone was a suspect and my mind was in overdrive trying to untangle the clues. But this book was hard to predict and I was repeatedly blindsided by bombshells as they were unveiled, making me question everything I thought I knew and having to try and figure things out all over again.
One of the things I loved was the author’s use of different narrators for the three parts of the book. It gave the characters a greater depth and illuminated parts of the story that a single narrator couldn’t have. I enjoyed getting to know each of the women and found myself connecting to each of them as I read their part. The plot was pacy and the tension increased with every section, keeping me on the edge of my seat from start to finish.
If you love page-turning thrillers full of twists then you need to read this book. Bad Seed is a brilliant story that will have you hooked.
Thank you to Orion Publishing Group and NetGalley for my copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Following the death of her parents, Sarah is on a mission to get answers. As she digs deeper and deeper into her family', the secrets only get darker and darker.
I loved this book. It was a fantastic story, a very clever and well written murder mystery. The characters were lovable and interesting too and I really couldn't turn the pages fast enough. Highly recommended.
On paper this sounds right up my street but after a shocking twist about a third of the way through it lost all credibility for me and went in a very strange direction. I hoped it would get better towards the end but for me it didn’t and is definitely a book I wish I hadn’t bothered to read to the end. Not for me sorry!!
** spoiler alert ** I didn't enjoy this as much as I could Have,as I didn't really like the voice of nichola... No idea why.
Luckily she didn't narrate the whole thing,so things picked up.
It seemed a slow process working out who did what and why,but the clues were there all along, you just needed the penny to drop and finally understand.
Cleverly done... though I felt the ending left me wondering what next????
Bad Seed by Jessica Eames
This is a great domestic thriller that kept me guessing, even when I thought I knew the perpetrator I was still second-guessing myself till the end. The story is told from the point of view of three women: Nicola, her daughter Sarah and her sister-in-law Fiona. Nicola’s life has been turned upside down by the death of her husband, Charlie. She is grieving, but also faced with the revelation that they were in a much worse financial position than she had imagined. Unable to continue living in the marital home, Nicola takes up the offer of a home in the annexe at Charlie’s step-brother’s home. She soon starts to feel unwell and her GP puts these symptoms down to menopause. Considering this, when Nicola seems subdued and pale, no one is surprised. But is it stress, or menopause, or is something more sinister going on?
My suspicions were roused further when her belongings start to go missing. At first she notices jewellery has gone and then she suspects someone of tampering suggests things in her home. I suspected the in-laws, the boyfriend and even wondered if the stress of bereavement and her new life was affecting her mental health. In some ways Nicola is moving on, she even has a new boyfriend, but she is in that limbo after bereavement where emotions can get confused and people can act out of character.
I read the book quickly, because it’s a good pacy read and I was invested in Nicola’s story. The characters are well fleshed out and believable and it was easy to relate to Nicola’s situation. It was well plotted and the author ratcheted up the tension in every section. I would recommend this novel and will be following this review up with a longer blog very soon at https://thelotusreaders.blogspot.com/

Nicola was married to Charlie. When he died she had to move having found their finances were not as healthy as she might have thought. She now lives in the annex of the house of Charlie’s stepbrother Ben and his wife Fiona. Nicola has a daughter- Sarah. When Nicola starts to get odd messages and it appears that someone has been in her home she is rather spooked, even more so that they might know her secret- something she has never told anyone but is to do with Charlie. As this progresses she leaves a message for Sarah to come and see her as she feels at least that her daughter ought to know the truth. She has been suffering from what she thought was the beginning of the menopause and so when she appears pale and withdrawn the others put it down to this until she collapses. Who knows the secret and can Sarah find out the truth? A book that kept me turning and the grey matter active. I thought I knew whom the perpetrator was and was wrong even though I changed my mind! A well written, clever, interesting read.

If I was asked to describe this book in one word I'd say "predictable"
It was an easy read that didn't hold any surprises for me, I felt that the prologue at the beginning spoilt the story by giving too much away,
Good characters who you grew to care about. Good story-line that kept me enthralled. I enjoyed the narration being conveyed from differing character viewpoints. Overall, would highly recommend. Thank you!
I really enjoyed this book. It is full of suspense and I read it all in one go. I guessed early on who was guilty but not why. I thought that the book was really well written and the writing style added to the suspense perfectly.
Thank you to Netgalley for my copy.
