I couldn't put this book down! I just had to keep on reading to see what happened to Laura, especially the past she doesn't want to talk about. Will read more by this talented author in future.
The Night Before is a new standalone suspense novel by Wendy Walker about two sisters Laura and Rosie. With a gripping storyline and fast pace, this book was full of tension.
My thanks to NetGalley and Orion Publishing Group for a copy of” The Night Before “ for an honest review.
I struggled to get into this book and by the end felt quite underwhelmed. I’ve only given it an average score as I’ve read so many better psychological thrillers lately, For me this book didn’t seem to have anything different to make it standout from the crowded market.
This wasn’t a bad read at all, it kept me wanting to read on.
I thought it was written pretty well and I liked the set up of the story with some bits of information in there to throw you off the scent.
The characters were pretty good and there was a decent amount of back story to fuel the present day story.
The ending was also pretty good and actually much better than I was expecting.
My only negative was that it had a lot of generic thriller qualities to it that made a bit of a standard read.
3.5/5
I would have liked to give 4.5 stars as it wasn’t quite 5, but what a great psychological thriller, kept me up reading into the night, I would like to reds another book by this author
Twisty and gripping by the end of it, I found it a bit hard to get to the 'meat' of the story, but once I got in the rhythm, it was great! Perfect for fans of dark thrillers with a male/female relationship at hear, like Gone Girl. I could kind of see where the story was going in terms of the 'twist', but was still surprised at the outcome. Recommend!
I thought it was a good psychological thriller and I enjoyed reading it, although I thought there was a lot of build up and the plot twists didn't justify such a big buildup. Nonetheless, I would recommend it and enjoyed reading it.
Took me a while to get into this book and if that happens for you my advice ... Stick with it lots of surprising twists that will keep you guessing till the end
This for me was a book that definitely got better as I got further into it. Told in different time lines and from alternate points of view by sisters Laura and Rosie, it focuses on Rosie's search for her sister after she goes missing following a date. Initially I found it somewhat confusing, but as the story unfolded I was drawn in more and more. There are plenty of twists and turns as Laura's complicated past is revealed which leave you questioning what you thought you knew, and I didn't see the final twist coming. If you are looking for a well written, twisty thriller you can devour relatively quickly I would highly recommend it.
Thank you to Netgalley and Orion for an advance copy in exchange for an honest review.
Wow, I really didn't see that coming. In fact I didn't expect several of the numerous plot twists. This is one of those books where you say to yourself that you will just read one more chapter until you are so far into the story that there is no point stopping now. And who needs sleep anyway. If you are still in any doubt as to what I thought of this book let's just say I wish I could give it 6 stars.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for an arc copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review.
This was one of my favourite books this year. I found it fast paced and thrilling; kept me turning page after page to find out what happened.
The Night Before was a middle of the road thriller for me and I give it 3.5 🌟
Laura and Rosie are sisters, Laura when we first meet her has split from her relationship, her job and generally her life in NYC. Laura has moved in with Rosie and her family and whilst there goes online and sets up a blind date, off she goes in her sisters car for Rosie to wake the next day to find Laura never came home, did Laura get carried away on her first date or has something more sinister happened? Laura’s past is is what makes Rosie worry about her.
This was a good storyline, I enjoyed the way the chapters went from present time, Rosie, to time leading upto and including the date, Laura, I also enjoyed the extracts into Laura’s sessions with her psychologist as it drip fed you the missing information needed to piece everything together. The book did however send you on a red herring trail like most thrillers but for me too much time was spent on this and could have been shorter therefore making for me a more enjoyable read.
I would like to thank Netgalley and Orion Publishing Group for this ARC I received in exchange for an honest review.
I really liked the cover. It is very appealing designed. The writing style is pleasant and very fluently to read. The characters are very well described and look well thought out and consistently interesting. The tension is always present. The descriptions of surroundings, feelings and scenes were also very good. The story is told pleasant and it succeeds from the first pages to dive directly into the story. The storyline as a whole is very coherent and it seems very understandable and authentic. A very fascinating story that you won't like to stop reading.
I always find it incredibly hard to review thriller books without wanting to just spoil the whole book so here is my short spoiler free review...
This story is told in two different timelines, which at first I thought I was going to hate but I actually really enjoyed and was also told from the perspective of both sisters, which I'm an absolute sucker for. This was a fast paced psychological thriller with some really good plot twists. However, I did find myself predicting the ending quite early on.
Overall this was an okay book and I do think I'll be reading more of Wendy Walker's books in the future.
Thank you to NetGalley and Orion Publishing Group for providing me with a copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.
4.5 stars.
Well, this book took me all round the houses and back again as I tried to figure it all out. I had many theories and suspects along the way and have to admit that most of them fell by the wayside along the way.
Laura is unlucky in love (aren't we all) and is still raw from the end of her latest relationship. So much so that she quit her job, fled her home and is currently holed up with her sister Rosie and her family. Determined - well cajoled and encouraged - to get back on the horse, we first meet her as she is getting ready for a date with a man she met on a dating app. When, next morning, Rosie discovers Laura hasn't returned she gets very worried. Laura, it appears, isn't the most stable cookie emotionally, so she enlists husband Joe, and family friend Gabe to help her track her down. They find the car, track her phone - which has subsequently died - and go all in to try and find her date she was supposed to meet as well as the boyfriend she recently split up with. All things that Gabe is good at as it is his job. Reluctant initially to call the police, due to an incident in Laura's past, they go all in to try to track Laura's last steps and, hopefully, bring her back home safe.
This contains all the elements you would expect from a book of the genre. We have secrets & lies aplenty with plenty of red herrings and misdirection. There is quite a lot of time spent on the past events, hinted at to ad infinitum so I got a bit bored with it all. There are also fingers pointed in various directions many times along the way that it all does get a bit muddy and busy along the way. That said, it did all come together nicely at the end with a conclusion that was wholly satisfying, if a little unexpected! There are a few things that are maybe built up a little too much along the way but then just seem to lose momentum and fizzle out but I guess that's also par for the course with the genre.
All in all another winner from this author to add to the two others of hers I've read. Looking forward to seeing what she has in store for next time. My thanks go to the Publisher and Netgalley for the chance to read this book.
Thanks Netgalley and the Publisher. This was an ok read, certainly not the best I have read and actually when I finished could not really tell you what it was about.
Although the book had a slow (ish) start, it soon progressed to become a gripping tale that i found hard to put down! Overall greatly enjoyed and recommend.
A bit slow to get going, lots of hints to what happened in the past but without saying much. Told in chapters from each sister’s point of view following a timeline. Got better the more I read so I couldn’t wait to find out how it would end.
If you are looking for a book with twists and turns this is it
from the outset it keeps you guessing
Laura is troubled and looking for love, she moves back in with her sister Rosie and goes on a date, she doesn't come home. Has something happened to Laura or has she done something herself which she is now running from.
the book jumps between a narrative from Laura and one from Rosie along with transcript from counselling sessions. All the main characters have a shared history with an unknown event which has left them all damaged, this is slowly revealed from the differing perspectives of the sisters.
I am not normally a fan of this type of story telling but in this case it kept me guessing and I did not figure out the ending until two thirds of the way through the book
This book didn't disappoint
4 stars
A quick easy read. This is a good story overall. There is a lot happening and it is compelling reading.
Thank you to Netgalley for my copy.
