A gorgeous portrait of Frida Kahlo, in the form of a nonfiction picture book for children. I found the art so stunning to look at even while reading a digital galley: vivid jewel-tones and expressive imagery that does its best to capture Friday's spirit. At the end, there's a list of her most famous paintings and a brief mention of the circumstances of the creation of each. Would make a great gift for the Frida fan of any age.

This was an awesome introduction to Frida Kahlo! While this written for a younger age group, there I still lots of information that adults may not know!

This was a well executed book, made for children but also for the true Frida Kahlo fanatic. The graphics are beautiful, and true to Fridas style. I highly recommend this book to anyone of any age.

This was a great book all about the artist Frida Kahlo. This book is very colorful and easy to read. The art in the book is done in the style of Frida Kahlo which really made it interesting and fun. It is full of interesting facts like because she was sick as a child, her father made her an easel that she could use to paint while lying down. I really enjoyed this book and think it would be great for any child who likes biographies, art, or just learning about new things.

A beautiful illustrated book for children and teenagers (but not only) narrating the beautiful life of Frida Kahlo.

The peculiarity of this book is that the life of the artist is narrated using her artworks.
I particularly appreciated the fact that the personality of Frida is strongly highlighted: it helps to portray her not only as a unique character but also as someone to learn and take inspiration from, a great role model for future generations.

Another excellent book in this series! It’s perfect for budding artists and any other older elementary child looking to learn more about the arts. The illustrations are all in the style of Frida Kahlo, adding to the overall mood. The lists found at the end of facts and her most famous paintings are a helpful resource. Highly recommended!

This is a beautifully illustrated children's book about the Mexican artist Frida Kahlo. The book manages to tell the story of her life in a simple yet captivating way. The illustrations are bright and beautiful just like Frida's paintings and convey the way in which Frida lived her life to the full despite having to deal with health problems and injuries.

We are told a story about a gifted woman who refused to be discouraged by life or corralled by cultural or societal expectations. I enjoyed reading this so much that it is going on my list of exquisite reads of 2019.

This an excellent book, telling us about the life of a talented and excellent artist. It will be a wonderful gift for any child or adult, and having read it I now want to know more about Frida.

A simple but well-written artist's biography for children

Tells the story of symbolist artist Frida Kahlo in a way easy for children to understand, with excellent, bright illustrations by Sandra Dieckmann. Shows the artist's most famous paintings and explains clearly and concisely why she made them. Also demonstrates Kahlo's resilience during her childhood illness and the power of art in the healing process. An excellent book for children of primary/junior school age with an interest in art.

This book is a winner. The illustrations are so beautiful and vibrant and the inclusion of copies of Frida's real paintings is a lovely touch. I think this is a good introduction to Frida and it does include a few hints about some of the more upsetting aspects of Frida's life while not dwelling on them. I'm sure this book will inspire lots of children to be determined to succeed and overcome obstacles. This was absolutely adorable. I liked it just as much as the Van Gogh one. Despite a degree in art history, I don't actually know that much about Frida Kahlo (due to mainly focusing on European art in my studies), so I went into this looking for a charming interpretation of her life but also to learn about it. And I think it did that wonderfully. The illustrations were perfect, and I think they emanated her style of art very well, so that everything was colourful and very Frida Kahlo-esque. I like that they still covered difficult moments in Frida's life, in a way that small children could understand while not simply glossing over it. I would definitely buy this book for a young child in my life and would look forward to reading it with them and learning about Frida together. It is a wonderful book to share.

In this beautifully written and well-illustrated book, readers are introduced to the Mexican artist Frida Kahlo and how she overcame obstacles to succeed as a well-recognized, successful artist with her own exhibition in New York City and her worked purchased by the Louvre in Paris. A fine choice for introducing the artist to young children because it gives readers a sense of the times in which she lived and her unique artistic style.

A simplified, but well written and well told story of the life of Frida Kahlo.

Each page of her life has a piece of her artwork, and in the end of the book, the pieces are explained.

Since this is a children's book, her relationship with Diego Rivera is factual, without going into the affairs that each of them had outside of marriage.

Lucy Brownridge did a beautiful job in describing the incredibly difficult and complex life of Frida Kahlo. The illustrations are equally as beautiful and will inspire children everywhere. The vibrant colors and the integration of Kahlo’s own artwork was masterfully done.

Portrait of an Artist: Frida Kahlo is an illustrated biography of Frida Kahlo aimed at young readers (6-10 years). Due out 3rd Sept 2019 from Quarto on their Wide Eyed Editions imprint, it's 32 pages and will be available in hardcover format.

This is an appealing full color illustrated short biography and it's part of the Portrait of an Artist series including children's biographies for luminaries such as Van Gogh, Monet, and Georgia O'Keeffe. I think the author does an admirable job of honestly presenting Kahlo's life in an age-appropriate manner. The typesetting and coloring are well done and it's especially impressive that the contrast is consistent and the text shows well and readably on all the different background colors. The art by Sandra Dieckmann is energetic and colorfully appealing.

There is a short interpretational resource list at the back of the book showing some of Frida's major works with an explanatory paragraph about the symbolism. This would make a good group read or resource book for a classroom unit on different artists as well as a nice read for an art interested youngster.

Well done and enjoyable. Five stars.

I don't read a ton of children's books, but I'm obsessed with Frida Kahlo, so I wanted to check this one out. Brownridge does an incredible job summarizing Kahlo's life and career in easy-to-understand language that's perfect for young readers. Her illustrations are fantastic and do a lot to evoke Kahlo's unique style. I also loved that she included small replications of Kahlo's works throughout the story so that readers can get acquainted with her art. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who wants to introduce their kids to art done by an amazingly talented woman of color.

Love this ‘Portrait of an Artist’ series. This richly illustrated book on Frida Kahlo does not disappoint. The basics of Frida's life story are told as well as some of her artwork. The colors of the illustrations transported me into Frida's world. Another well done book in the series.

Portrait of an Artist: Frida Kahlo by Lucy Brownridge is a beautiful little book showcasing a Mexican artist. It's a quick overview of her life and art that illustrated beautifully. It's fun how her painting were incorporated into the illustrations!

It was a real delight to get to read this (picture) book. Frida was a truly inspirational person, and this book sums up her life very nicely. Besides the pictures in the book (that I have to say are so Frida-like and beautiful), the part I appreciate the most is the author's success in portraying the artist's life and the background in which some of her most prized works of art are created. The author uses just a few sentences to truly summarize the life of the real contemporary art heroine.
