Mirry and husband Fred are expecting their first child when Mirry’s 14 year old sister,Barbara, moves in with them.
We follow the story of their lives through the Second World War. There are good and bad times but there is a very strong theme of standing strong together.
Sheila Newberry draws the characters well and this is an enjoyable novel.
This is a lovely book with such amazing characters. The characters are so well developed and seen so real.
This book is a complete page turner and I. couldn’t put it down.
A great read.
This book was a brilliant read and one that is perfect to escape for a few hours and loose yourself.
Characters that fall out of the pages of the book and make you fell apart of the story, the setting is lovely and captured well with words.
A great read. that I would highly recommend.
World War 2 saga about the experiences of one family and their friends. An enjoyable read, particularly for anyone interested in this period as a great deal of the war is covered. I would have preferred more detail myself, but this has not diminished my enjoyment of the story.
I love books set amongst the war years. The Hope Family have a lovely family life. Miriam is bringing up her new baby, and looking after her teenage sister. When war breaks out their lives change. We follow their evacuation and the friendships made amongst life's struggles. There are sad times and times for celebration. Bar has a few struggles and heartbreak along the way.
You feel a part of the family with their different experiences of the war.
I loved it. I thought it might be a bit tame, but no the characters drew me in and I was hooked. It was very sad in parts for Bar and the family but had a good ending. I really liked Bar, she had such guts and courage. Times were really tough during the war with a constant fear of bombs and of being evacuated.
I could empathise with the situation somewhat, as my husband was evacuated to Lancashire when he was 2 years old when his house in London took a direct hit. How awful that must have been and Sheila describes it all so well.
I wi ll read more of her books.
Thank you for my ARC copy, I am really grateful for this
Number 5 Kitchener Avenue is the home of the Hope family. Miriam is pregnant and married to Fred. Miriam's fourteen year old sister, Barbara lives with them. Christmas is approaching but so is World War II. Barbara joins the ATS. Miriam and her children are evacuated to the country.
This story tells of the Hope family (and thousands of other families) coped through this horrific event. Families were split up. Men were expected to join up and women were expected to step up and do the jobs the men left behind. This story is told in graphic detail. This is an emotional and believable story. The characters are true to life and well rounded. This is the first book that I've read by the author, but it wont be my last.
I would like to thank NetGalley, Bonnier Books UK and the author Sheila Newberry for my ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Another fantastic read from Sheila Newberry. Great characters, lovely writing style and draws you in from the beginning. Always a pleasure to read her books!
Wow! This book was so good. Really enjoyed it. Will be trying this author again. Will recommend to others 5***
An unusual style and turn of phrase in this novel, The Hope family are coping with life during WW2. It makes you glad that you were born after the war and not before or during it. Some excellent graphic detail of the era and the predicament and historical facts of the war. Likeable characters. A mix of jolly times and tragedy. Thank you to NetGalley and Bonnier Zaffre.
