I love coming back to Larkford. The cast of characters are like old friends you can't wait to catch up with, and check in on how they are doing.
However, not all is well amongst our beloved residents and it seems like children play a big part in most of the dramas.
I totally love Holly's new nanny Plum though, She's a breath of continental fresh air and a delight to read, I hope we see a lot more of her in the series. I was made up with Dan's storyline too, I've always had a soft spot for Dan and it was nice to see how his arc turned out in this story.
I hope to be back in Larkford soon, I miss it already
I very much enjoyed this book. It has a good story and excellent main characters. I would definately recommend this book.
Unfortunately, I have not been able to read and review this book.
After losing and replacing my broken Kindle and getting a new phone I was unable to download the title again for review as it was no longer available on Netgalley.
I’m really sorry about this and hope that it won’t affect you allowing me to read and review your titles in the future.
Thank you so much for giving me this opportunity.
Natalie.
Unfortunately I was unable to get in to this story and had to put it down, however, I'm sure it is a highly loved book and appreciated by the right readers.
It took me a little while to get into this book as it was the first of the series that I had read so it felt like I was jumping about a bit from character to character. Once I got into the book I was pleasantly drawn in by the issues occurring at the practice and the way that the various storylines developed.
I'd happily read more by this author and recommend her to others.
This book was a brilliant read and one that is perfect to escape for a few hours and loose yourself.
Characters that fall out of the pages of the book and make you fell apart of the story, the setting is lovely and captured well with words.
A great read. that I would highly recommend.
I’ve heard good things about Liane Moriarty’s books and was excited when I got accepted for this on Netgalley.
I’ve absolutely adored the first 3 books in the “practice” series by Penny Parkes, they are so cosy and inviting, it doesn’t take long for you to feel welcome when you start the next one in the series.
The writing is easy to get on with an or sink hours into reading it, barely stopping to eat and sleep (oh and work, don’t tell my boss). The characters are relatable or recognisable in people you may know, especially if you live in a similar sized community.
Once again we follow a few different characters viewpoints, which worked really nicely to keep the flow, never a chance for you to get bored as you pick up each character’s story thread.
Holly is obviously centre stage for most of it, and it’s nice to see her out of the surgery as she is towards the end of her maternity leave, though she is certainly keen to return, but understandably feels torn. Her practical mind is still at the forefront trying to make everything run more smoothly.
I Loved Taffy as ever, though it was nice to see him as flawed and not the perfect partner he was on the first three books.
Dan and his partner Grace had a really nice side plot that was very touching in a heart-warming and heart-breaking way. I adored new character Plum, she was amazing, and loved how she fitted into life in Larkford.
Simply put, everything about this book was enticing and once more I found myself reluctant to leave Larkford.
This was a lovely Christmassy delight. I love nothing more than curling up with a festive read over the Christmas holidays and this was the perfect book to do just that.
This is part of a series, but one I hadn’t come across before. Luckily that didn’t matter too much and the back story/ characters were easy to follow. I loved the village setting of the book and the characters had me hooked right from the word go. It had plenty of Christmas sparkle as well as plenty of romance.
I will definitely be looking out for more books by Penny Parkes in the future.
loved this read. Although it is the first in the series which I have read, I became totally engrossed in the stories of the friends especially Holly and had no difficulty getting to know their stories. They are full of love and friendship and it was a real heartwarming experience. Although there are several characters to follow, their stories are distinct. Holly seems to be the central figure between them and she is the bedrock of village life. Highly recommended, it is well written and engaging.
Thanks to Netgalley for a copy of the book.
A really heartwarming book set in Larkford , around the gp surgery. The characters are all so well drawn that you quickly fall in love with them and feel their frustrations. Holly is missing her working life, whilst she is on maternity leave, but feels she is meeting opposition making a return.
There are problems at the surgery and Holly has great plans for making some changes.
You get a real sense of the village community and the struggles of modern family life, trying to juggle everything. I am keen to look out further books in this series
Another fabulous instalment to the Larkford series. The new faces are fresh and add to the story mingled with the return of old favourite characters. Funny moments and moments that genuinely caused me to shed a tear. Immersive, captivating and thoroughly enjoyable.
Thank you Netgalley
This is the first of Penny Parkes’ books I have read so I was unfamiliar with the main characters. Although there were some assumptions that the reader would know the characters’ backstories there was ample information and explanations provided that meant I didn’t feel like I had huge gaps in my understanding and I was able to piece each character’s story together. I will definitely head back to The Practice and read the other stories in the correct order as I did enjoy this book - it can be read as a stand-alone story, but I imagine it would be better if read as part of the series.
I do like a ‘happily ever after’ and I realise that this can often mean things happening in books that wouldn’t necessarily happen in real life, but some of the plot lines in the book were pretty unbelievable - things fell into place a little too easily quite often, but I took this as necessary plots in order for happy endings for each character and it didn’t really detract too much from my enjoyment of the book.
I liked the writing style & found it easy to read, which added an extra star in my rating for this book, and I would definitely look for more books by this author (after catching up with the the residents of Larkford first, obviously).
It's almost Christmas time at Larkford Surgery but the doctors have their own problems to deal with. Holly wants to go back to work after giving birth to twins, but it seems the other partners don't want her back yet, so she gets busy helping everyone else.
Grace and Dan are discussing whether or not to have a child, while widowed rock-star Connor is looking for a place to start a new life but it's not easy when he is still grieving over the family he lost.
The story is heart-warming and entertaining, but I found it difficult to connect to the characters, maybe because this is the fourth book in the series. So I would advise that your reading experience would be enhanced by reading the three previous books first. Overall, Snowed in at The Practice was still an enjoyable, well-written read.
Time for another appointment with the Doctors at the Larkford Surgery.
Whilst Dr Holly Graham is on maternity leave and struggling to make everyone else understand that is she just not simply the mother of two sets of twins, she is also a wife, a friend and a doctor. There must be a better way to transition back to working than everyone seems to be suggesting at the moment.
Perhaps talking to her patients on a normal level and with no pressure is the only way to go, but when an offer of an feature on a radio show and also a fixture at the Rugby Club, it seems that Holly's options are even greater than she first thought.
Dr Alice Walker and her amazing dog Coco are still working their magic but it seems that Alice has also brought a fellow doctor and friend Dr Tilly Grainger along who is struggling to fit in not just in the village of Larkford where hearts are being broken by the day, but as a doctor in something other than the war zones she had been used to. Is there a project that Tilly can call her own and something where she feels she is making a difference?
Dr Dan Carter and Practice Manager Grace are facing some difficult decisions and it seems that their future is decided for them when someone captures Dan's heart.
Along with this we have all the other wonderful characters which have featured in previous Larkford novels, the wonder that is Elsie, hellbent on being the centre of attention wherever she may go and of course Holly's friend Lizzie and former rock star Connor whose life is about to be changed once again.
This book like the previous three is a complete joy to read. You are completely immersed in the world of Larkford and the residents and of course the patients as well as the doctors at the surgery. There are some real tough topics dealt with in this book. You might need to harden your heart or just let the tears flow as I did. Nothing is off limits. It is both joyous and sad in equal measure.
What makes this series if books stand out is the clear detail that the author has gone into to understand the workings of a local GP practice, a practice which I am sure like many around the country is suffering from an overload of paperwork, government targets and cut backs on the things that really matter like time with the patients. I don't know how Penny Parkes does it but she has brought a 'hot topic' into fiction and added a dose of characters and created a series which I think could run and run.
I prescribe this series of books to everyone.
I didn’t realise this was 4th in a series when I requested so felt a bit lost at times, so not going to mark down due to my error
Thanks to netgalley and the publisher for a free copy for an honest opinion
This is the first book in the Larkford series that I’ve read, but I was tempted by it being a Christmas novel. I’ve enjoyed it so much that I’ll be going back to read the previous three books!
Even though it’s part of a series, it can definitely be read as a standalone, and I didn’t feel that I’d missed anything important by coming into the series at book four.
The story is mainly focussed on Holly, a doctor on maternity leave after the birth of her second set of twins, but there are other important characters to keep up the interest.
This is a lovely, feel-good Christmas read and I’d highly recommend it.
Thank you to NetGalley and Simon & Schuster UK for an advance reader copy in return for an honest review.
Thanks Netgalley and the Publisher. I really enjoy this series and all the characters and often think what a lovely place to live.
Another 5* book from Penny Parkes and The Practice. Helpful to have read the books in order but equally you’re able to pick up the storyline and the characters as you go along. Based around a GP practice, although not one I’ve ever worked with, and a small country village. From the title it’s easy to guess the time of year the book is set in and for once we don’t end on Christmas Day! Easy to read. Great chapters and loads of fun. Thanks to Penny and NetGalley n
This book is the 4th in the series of books set in Larkford, a small Cotswold village. The series evolves around the GP surgery and the Doctors who work there. I have read and enjoyed each of the books in this series. Although this book can be read as a standalone novel, I think that it is much more enjoyable when read as part of the series.
In this book Holly is on maternity leave after the birth of her and Taffy's twin daughters. She can't help but feel that she wants to return to work. Her husband Taffy seems reluctant for her to do so, and cracks soon start to appear in their relationship.
In the meantime Dan and Grace also face a problem with their romance which could be make or break for their
relationship.
The other two GPs Alice and Tilly are also feeling out of place, and unsure as to whether they have a future in Larkford or not.
There is also the rest of Larkfords eclectic community who have their on problems or opinions for the Doctors to deal with.
The storyline has a real focus on family and community lives. How a family might take a different form, and not just blood relatives. There is also a large dose of community spirit.
There is a strong emphasis on getting the work/home balance right which a lot of people can probably relate to.
Penny's writing has a warmth to it, and she also brings her characters to life. There are a lot of uplifting, romantic and humorous moments, but there is also a more serious side, with medical problems, difficult decisions and tragedy.
Overall this book is very readable, heartwarming and enjoyable. Perfect for curling up with.
Thank you to Netgalley and the Publisher for my ARC.
This is book #4 of the Larkford series. It’s the first book I’ve read in the series, but it can be read as a standalone novel as I picked up the characters storylines quite easily. The story returns to the village and Dr Holly Graham who is balancing motherhood and work. Covering Holly whilst she is on maternity leave is the new doctor, Tilly. All the characters are wonderful and so likeable!! Whilst it was the first time I’ve met any of them, within a few chapters I felt like I’d known them for ages! My favourite character though had to be Dr Holly! You certainly have to admire her, being a mother to two sets of twins and wanting to return to work as well!!
The story began well and quickly drew me into the storyline. Set around Christmas time, it certainly was festive enough to get you into the Christmas spirit. The story was heart-warming with plenty of light hearted humour and fun, alongside some more emotional parts. The topic of families is a strong thread which firmly runs through this book, and it was lovely to see how the whole village supports each other. I also loved the inclusion of an assistance dog, as my husband has a dual-purpose Guide/Medical Alert dog. It’s amazing the work they do and it’s nice to see it recognised in stories such as these.
I loved this book and will definitely be going back to read the previous three books to catch up on the characters histories (I can’t honestly believe that I haven’t already read them!!). This book is absolutely perfect, not just for the festive period, but for any time of the year!! Great characters, lovely location and a heart-warming storyline which left me with a big smile on my face – what more could you ask for!!
