The Vlogger's Handbook is a detailed intro to the world of vlogging and maintaining a channel. It is meant for a younger, pre-teen audience approaching the minimum age where they can have a channel with parental permission (13 on YouTube). Enticingly illustrated, this book goes over every detail that an aspiring creator would need to take into consideration when creating a channel. Everything from idea generation, to equipment, lighting and editing, and a breakdown of various platforms is covered. Obviously when one hears the word "vlogging" their first thought is probably going to be YouTube or Vimeo, but The Vlogger's Handbook makes the effort to remind the reader that vlogs can also be hosted on less talked about spaces like personal Wordpress sites, and even IG-TV. Obviously not every platform will continue to be successful or relevant over time, but The Vlogger's Handbook does a thorough job of naming the ones that are relevant in 2019. What I particularly liked was the inclusion of resources for free video editing software and royalty-free music, which young teens will find invaluable as most will not have the funds to pay for tools like Sony Vegas or Adobe Premier. Even having lurked around YouTube for years, I picked up a couple tips from this book, which I very much appreciate.

My rating of 4-Stars stems from the fact that a lot of the information in this book will probably be self-evident to anyone who spends enough time around YouTube to know that they want to try vlogging for themselves. I also found myself to be frustrated that young vloggers were apparently contributing to the book via Q&A, but other than their first names and the subject of their vlogs, I had no idea who they were. It wasn't until the end of the book that their channel names were listed so I could see if they were in fact real vloggers.

This is a really fun, engaging and inspiring book which really breaks down the process of vlogging into a series of creative activities that encourage children and young people to really reflect upon what it is that want to explore, why, and how to do it. I would highly recommend it.
