This is a fast paced and enjoyable thriller that I powered through in less than a day. I love the premise of something dark and twisted going on in a house share and The Wrong Move didn't disappoint.
I love stories about flatmates and house shares so I was really looking forward to this one. I think perhaps stories about flatmates might have been done so much in the past and need something different about them, and this didn't hold that much for me
I read this book in two days and for the most part I really enjoyed it, it definitely kept me hooked as I needed to know how the story would unfold.
Jessie moves into a flatshare in Brighton after escaping an abusive relationship. At first it seems like she might have found new friends, but as things start to go wrong for her you realise that not all might be as it seems.
I found refreshing that although the book is written mainly on Jessie’s perspective, every now and then it switches to the other characters, (especially at the end when the explanation unfolds) giving you a different view and an insight into their characters. This is also quite different from all the books I’ve been reading lately.
I did find Jessie’s character a bit annoying and unrelatable, I know she has been through a lot and her confidence is shattered, but she displays a weakness of character and gullibility that I found irritating.
I also felt the ending was rushed and not fully wrapped up.
Many thanks to NetGalley and Penguin Random House UK Ebury for letting me review this book.
I wanted to like this book and the first few chapters suggested it was the type of thriller I usually enjoy. However I found the main character Jessie super annoying and her crippling self doubt was irritating.
I found the whole story a little car fetched and didn't like the way that the point of view would switch in the middle of a chapte.
A good idea for a book that just didn't own out.
Be aware, you will not want to put this book down. Who can you trust? Jessie tries to escape her past by moving to Brighton to start a new life with a new job and house shares with strangers, but all the roommates are hiding something.
A well thought out and intriguing psychological thriller that explores living in house/flat shares and asks the question do we really know and can we trust the people we choose to live with?
I really enjoyed this book. Jessie moves in to a flat share in Brighton. She feels happy that she seems to get on so well with Lauren and Sofie, her 2 flatmates, although the 4th person, Marcus, seems a bit odd. However, all is not what it seems. When strange things start to happen, Jessie is convinced that her controlling ex partner is responsible. But could it be closer to home? This is a good read which will keep you guessing. Thanks to NetGalley for a preview copy.
Copied to Goodreads.
Jessie moves to Brighton after a breakup and seeks a place to live. Finding a run down but affordable flat with seemingly perfect flat mates she resolved to make the best of it and throws herself into her new life. But are the flat mates all the seem?
Many thanks to the publisher and netgalley for the arc.
I was riveted from the start. You never quite knew if Jessie was paranoid about her flat mates or if something sinister was going on and THEN...,,,you were sure something sinister was going on and you speed read through it find out what. The flat mates were creepy, connected in a mysterious way and when you do find out what’s going on, you’re dying for one more chapter to really explain and give you more detail. I though this book was well written and would have happily had a few more chapters to further explain what happens next!!!

Jessie joins the other tenants in 4 Maver Place, Sofie, Lauren and Marcus in a house share but then incidents started happening with her. Someone was in her room when she went out, someone attacked on her etc etc. Now everyone is not what they seem.
This story is like a movie. If it would become a movie in future then maybe it will earn a good collection but as a book it's just ok. There are a lot of loose ends which aren't done correctly and they make the book slow, really slow. I found myself hard to keep reading.
Characters are somewhat likeable but the lead character of Jessica didn't impress at all. However it was like a movie. Slow narration maybe works in movie but here its difficult to keep it up. But overall every thriller lover give it a go.
Thanks to NetGalley and Penguin UK Ebury Publishing for giving me an advance copy.
Quite disjointed in places and not always easy to follow with the switch in characters and lacked the suspense unfortunately on occasion. But a good ending and a good first novel.
The story centers around Jessie who seeks a new life in Brighton after escaping an abusive boyfriend. What seems like a great start with friendly new flat mates turns into a nightmare. Do you really know who you live with? Read it and find out.
I git through this book pretty sharpish to be honest, a good psychological thriller with plenty of suspense, it had my hairs standing on end in parts and I was so nervous for the main character wondering what next!!! I’d defo never share a flag after reading this 😳
Brilliant thriller and I’ll be looking out for more from the author.
Jessie moves to Brighton after a bad relationship break up, she wants to start again in a place she feels at home. However, finding somewhere to live is difficult until she is shown Maver Place, with a room that whilst it isn’t amazing is better than anything she’s looked at. Shes soon getting to know her flatmates, finally she feels safe, she feels at home.
How wrong can she be? When things start happening she is caught up in a nightmare where she starts questioning her own thoughts and whether the previous tenants of her room left or ran.
This is a great read, it has all the suspense that you want from a thriller and leaves you wanting to know what happens next. #TheWrongMove #NetGalley
This was fun but, unfortunately, very predictable so the ‘twists’ didn’t really have much impact. The plot felt... formulaic. I nevertheless read to the end, if only to confirm my predictions - which were spot on, every time! Not great but it was fine; a decent book to take along on holiday or read over a lazy weekend.
Jessie is escaping an abusive relationship and moves into a flatshare in Brighton. Her flatmates seem nice enough at first but things start moving in her room and she gets some ominous text messages. It's a good read and I got through it quite quickly. I did find it quite predictable and in some places the writing was a bit clumsy but overall I enjoyed it.
I loved this book. There were lots of twists and turns, this kept me gripped. The characters were excellently written and I could picture them all whilst I was reading. It was written in a way that you just wanted to see what would happen next. It was also written so that I had sympathy for the characters. Great read. Thank you.
I thought this was a great debut novel and I already can’t wait to see what the author does next.
I did enjoy the story & it had my interest throughout, however I do feel it dragged in parts that should have been quickly resolved and sections that could have been more fleshed out, weren’t.
I didn’t find any of the characters particularly likeable however I am not sure if that was the intention. I enjoyed the writing style although sometimes found it hard to keep up with who’s thoughts were who’s as it quickly jumped from person to person.
I found the ending very predictable and also feel like it was very rushed.
This will make you never want to house share ever again. It’s wonderfully dark, full of action and suspense, well thought out and a great story plot. There are plenty of twists along the way to keep you guessing but all ties up in the end.
Jessie Campbell moves to Brighton to start a new life, surrounded by new flat mates that are a very mixed bunch of characters and it just doesn’t go to plan. This is a hard book to review as I struggled to enjoy it as although there were some good parts I found the majority of the book to drag for me. In parts it seemed to be very disjointed and this made it difficult to hold my interest. There was some twists but all in all this was a read that just wasn’t for me sadly.
My thanks to NetGalley and Penguin Random House UK, Ebury Publishing for giving me the chance to read the ARC in exchange for my honest opinion.
