A unique twist to a home invasion crime, the family is at home, but cannot hear the crime being committed. As a policewoman with ASL skills, Paige must work with the family and the police to solve the murder. Nell Pattison did a great job of describing how reactions differ between the hearing and hearing impaired. Her community of characters seemed true to life and kept the tension building until the end. Great read on this gloomy afternoon.
So sorry I just couldn't get into this book.I would prefer not to leave a review rather than leave a bad one.
A wonderfully written murder mystery that is worth your time.
Although I had a hunch about ‘whodunit’ in this suspense packed novel, it was the characters, their little community described in this book that got me hooked to the story (and of course, the brutal murder that took place). Since figuring out the ’who’, I still wanted to continue because things were not quite clear about ‘why’. When everything was laid down on the table to walk through reasons; I was blown away by the impression it left behind.
The story itself has ups and downs of strides. A couple of chapters seemed totally unnecessary drags to fill up the pages. But if I think about it from beginning to end; every chapter had its own purpose hiding underneath all the chaotic happenings at Hunter family.
As described in synopsis, after the murder takes place, interpreter Paige Northwood- who was called for her job- somehow gets entangled in everything that goes on since the horrific incident.
In my view, I believe this novel is more about how Paige personally gets herself involved than just a crime to be solved by professionals. This precise reason alone was intriguing enough besides the main plot. Here you will read how one incident could affect all the people around you. How you dreadfully realize not everyone is as they seem to be on the surface.
I give it 3 stars because as mentioned, I already had my suspicion which later turned into conviction about who the culprit is right from the beginning.
My utmost thanks to NetGalley, Avon Books UK, and most importantly the author for sending me her debut work in advance for an honest review. I truly look forward to reading more from the writer!
Unfortunately, this book is incredibly slow and it doesn't really speed up. It's a long book (400 pages) for a slow book. It wasn't really my thing
The premise of this book was excellent. The idea of a gruesome murder in the home of a deaf family sent shivers down my spine. It was fast-paced and thrilling, though Paige was a slightly difficult character to get on with. I personally preferred the third person chapters, and the big reveal was executed brilliantly.
Thank you to Netgalley and Avon for this advanced reader's copy. Chilling concept and a stunning read. My novel of the year.
The Silent House, is a novel about the police investigation of the death of a young child, Lexi. The family of the child are deaf and the book is narrated primarily in the first person by the BSL interpreter Paige. Paige herself is not deaf, but part of the deaf community through her deaf parents and her sister Anna. Paige struggles with the logistics and emotions arising from her role in the investigation, as well as the balance she needs to strike between being apart of the community and professionally working within it.
Interspersed between Paige’s narrative are snippets of time leading up to Lexi’s death that serve to provide a backstory for the wider narrative. The chapters are from the perspectives of various other characters, Lexi’s mother Laura, Lexi’s father Alan, Alan’s new partner Elisha, to name a few. The time frames start fifteen hours before the murder and culminate with Lexi’s murder revealing the offender.
We see Paige playing a larger role than she intended in the investigation and all the consequences.
I read this book on trains, planes and whilst waiting in line. Couldn’t put it down. Paige is an interesting lead, a little frustrating - shes a good listener but not such a great advice taker! But that’s what
Made for such a good read. A really interesting approach to a book and gave me pause around the challenges members of the deaf community, stereotypes, and what service provision could look like.
Thank you to The Author, Netgalley and Avon Books Uk.
For publication in 2020. I received an eARC in exchange for an honest review.
My review will also be posted online at my bookstagram @aplace_inthesun.
I tried so hard to read this book!! I've started and stopped it a dozen times. I just can't get into it. The description is so promising however it's so slow going I can't seem to stay focused on it. It was a DNF for me. 😔
Bringing death into a deaf community, Nell Pattison's debut is a cleverly crafted and captivating thriller that sets the bar high for crime fiction in 2020.
This was a very well written and original book, which was absolutely unputdownable! I highly recommend to those who love thrillers, especially those that are original, disturbing, and shocking! Must read for my fellow thriller lovers! Grab your copy today, this is one you do not want to miss!
Will make sure I buzz it up!
Thank you to NetGalley, the publisher and author for this ARC.
I found this to be a good book, although not a great one. It had a good plot with mostly likeable characters. Paige, a deaf interpreter is called in to help the Police investigate the murder of a young girl whose parents are deaf and communicate via sign language. The Police have suspects but no hard evidence. The plot has quite a few twists and turns featuring several suspects and at times I felt the story was just a bit too long and it lost my attention. I also thought the main character was very naive in some parts which to me made the story a little unreal and far fetched. I had an idea who the killer was and was right. 3.5 stars.
The Silent House is a unique thriller that has a great storyline. The characters are well developed and the book is well written.
Wow. This book. I was shocked. A deaf family don’t hear a thing when a brutal murder takes place in their home! Who would kill a little girl? And intruder? Or someone closer to home.
Thank you to the author, the publisher and NetGalley for an ARC of this book, for my honest review.
This is a great thrilling read, and the characters are easy to get to know and you can resonate with through the book. It was interesting to learn more about the deaf community, the struggles that they can go through (especially with now understanding that they wouldn't know if someone burst through the door), and sign language interpreters.
If I could give this one 10 stars, I definitely would do so. Everyone should add this to their TBR list.
I was interested in reading The Silent House as it was a unique concept. If someone was in your house, you’d know. You’d hear them but everyone in the Hunter house is deaf and don’t hear when a shocking crime is committed in the middle of the night.
This book started off well and I really wanted to love it but felt that it lacked pace and seemed to go on for far too long. Not one of my favourite books of the year but I’m sure others will love it.
Thank you to NetGalley, Avon Books and the author for the chance to review.
This book is unique in the way it is written . A good story and well worth a read. I recommend it. Thank you for the opportunity to read it
When Paige receives a call to interpret in a murder within the deaf community she is upset as she knows the family and her sister is the child’s godmother. Using her knowledge of the deaf community she aids the police while investigating herself. Soon she is drawn into the case as more than an interpreter.
I really enjoyed this book. The characters were great and the difference in involving the deaf culture was brilliant. I really hope there is a second book.
Thank you to netgalley and the publishers for this arc in exchange for my honest review.
I was really attracted to this book because of its premise. I love mystery books that will make my head hurt because of guessing and guessing of what will happen next.
I will do this one a spoiler free review.
When I started reading this boom, yes, it didnt fail to make my head swirl. In a good way. It was a weird setup for me. I couldnt relate with the protagonist much.
But the plot itself was intriguing and exciting enough for me. This was my first book from the author and I cant wait to read more.
I would definitely recommend this one. This is not your typical mystery books, trust me.
What to say about The Silent House by Nell Pattison... I didn’t hate it, but I definitely didn’t love it.
One thing that I do enjoy about this book is the representation. It isn’t often that a book highlights those in the deaf community as well as those who utilize sign language. While I don’t know if the author correctly portrays individuals in the deaf community, it is nice to see more representation with this book.
This is a very slow paced and predictable thriller. When I first read the synopsis, I immediately requested it because the plot sounded great and didn’t give too much away. I really enjoy going into thrillers blind so that I can draw my own conclusions and not have theories going in. However, as I got into the book it was very obvious to me who did it too soon in the book which made the book drag even more.
The writing is okay- I do think that with this premise, some of the BSL dialogue exchanges between characters did get a bit lengthy and bogged it down. Other parts of the writing seemed to go at a quicker pace.
I would be interested in reading more from this author in the future.
Thank you to Avon Books UK via NetGalley for the advanced readers copy in exchange for an honest review.
I love reading books that encompass a 'new-to-me' aspect. This book was so well written, the characters were relatable and the twists were crazy!
