Like other books in this series, it is a fun little introduction to inspiring people. Definitely a great way to introduce kids to biographies and a nice read for adults too. I would recommend all the books in this series.

The Little People Big Dreams series are always great, and I'd always happily recommend any and all of them to customers. I'm yet to find one I don't like and they offer a great introduction to some fascinating people for kids (and in some cases adults too!).

The genre that Frankenstein falls into has always led me to sort of shy away from it in a lot of instances. The film that came out some time ago, however, about the life of its author was really the jump start that I needed in developing an interest in it. Since then, I've often found myself fascinated with Mary Shelley and her life story. Thus, when paired with my fondness for the Little People, Big Dreams series of books by Mª Isabel Sánchez Vegara, illustrated by Yelena Bryksenkova there really was little question in the fact that I knew I needed to read this particular addition. And Mary Shelley was fantastic.

A very quick biographical story of renown author Mary Shelley, this book is an amazing and inspirational addition to the series. As an aspiring author, myself, I cannot help but feel immensely proud to see the life story of Mary Shelley written out and illustrated for young readers to read and learn. It does a pretty wonderful job of introducing everyone to Mary and allowing us to journey with her from childhood to when she eventually wrote one of the most well-received ghost stories in history.

As it is a children's novel, the book definitely glosses over many of the darker pieces of Shelley's life. Fortunately, this does not really take away from the book but rather offers young readers a great introduction to this historical figure. I love the fact that this book is such an excellent starting point for fostering an interest within young minds that may one day lead them to learn more about this incredible woman.

The illustrations in this particular edition were, admittedly, not my favorite. I'm not sure how engaging the artwork will be to young readers; it is the unfortunate result of trying to keep muted colors in line with the themes of Mary Shelley's work. That said, I still think the general style does a wonderful job of fitting in with the theme of the Little People, Big Dreams series. Perhaps brighter colors might have been a better fit for some portions of the story?

Mary Shelley was the OG goth queen, the mother of science fiction, though not credited with it enough, with a classic that spawned such a variety of monster culture.

This entry into the charming Little People, BIG DREAMS series takes a look at the creator of one of literature and film's most enduring characters. From a young age, Shelley loved to write. That passion stayed with her through adulthood. During a gathering at Lord Byron's, he issued a challenge- each attendant had to write a (ghost) story. It is from this that her most well-known publication grew- Frankenstein. At the end is a section with more detailed information on Shelley's life. Inspirational and educational both, this entire series is great! Well worth stocking in libraries, and as part of a teacher's classroom aids.

I love the books in the Little People, Big Dreams series! The books teach kids about important historical figures.

Last year was the 200th anniversary of the publication of Frankenstein by Mary Shelley. There were many retellings and biographies of her that were published last year to celebrate.

Shelley was an intelligent and innovative woman. She used the knowledge of new inventions of the 1800s to write one of the most famous horror stories of all time. It is amazing that she wrote it when she was a young woman. She wrote it for a competition between friends to write a scary story. She was very successful with that project.

This is a great book to teach kids about Mary Shelley.

I absolutely love Mary Shelley! I love her writing and reading about her life story. One, this series is wonderful! Two, this book was a great short history of Mary Shelley and her life. She had such a tragic life and this children's book doesn't sugar coat that. Definitely a wonderful edition to the series.

This book is so sweet! I love it.
I didn't know the story, but I loved the way the author wrote it.
Definitely recommend it!

Great introduction to Mary Shelley for kids, the narrative of her life is presented in a straightforward way that is easy and approachable. The majority of the biography focuses on her importance to the literary world, while this is important I think for a more in-depth look at her life this book should not be relied upon alone.

I adore this series! I just cannot get over how much I love these little character profiles, from the stories all the way down to the artwork. What a joy to read and share with my daughters!

This book was far more successful than other books in this series, but I still take objection to two things, one an omission, another an anachronism. First the anachronism, the word teenager didn't exist yet. Now to the omission... Mary was particularly influenced in her writing by her recent miscarriage, which can be see throughout the text of Frankenstein and seeing as her mother's death from pregnancy was already discussed earlier in the book I don't think that omitting this fact was necessary. In fact, just a small line about it would have given the book a more real, a more true feeling. Instead it was lackluster. Though I did really enjoy the artwork, with it's stylistic Regency look that was very two dimensional, I felt that it captured something special.

Books in the Little People, BIG DREAMS! series never fail to impress me with their accessible storylines and delightful illustrations, especially when featuring historic women scientists, artists, and writers. Mary Shelley does not disappoint.

Born in 1797, to philosopher and political writer William Godwin and famed feminist Mary Wollstonecraft, Shelley became the writer of what might be the most famous horror novel of all time: Frankenstein, or the Modern Prometheus. From dealing with her childhood struggles through her ample imagination to her scandalous affair with married Percy Bysshe Shelley, whom she later wed, Maria Isabel Sanchez Vegara’s text presents appropriate, relevant, and interesting language for readers aged five to eight paired with illustrations that capture the mood and time of the era. The book closes with a more in-depth biography for older or adult readers.

If I could change anything about the book, I would want more information about what Shelley did after writing Frankenstein, though I understand why her early life and the book itself is the biography’s key focus.

Mary Shelley celebrates the power of imagination and illustrates the powerful and ongoing effects of literature.

I thought the choice of Mary Shelley was odd considering she wrote Frankenstein. Like all in the series, this is a simple biography of the author. It starts on the rather grim note of her mother dying and wanting to not be around her step-mother. I found it odd that it mentioned that her lover, Percy Bysshe Shelley, was married already. Now, I understand that's a fact in the matter but what doesn't it have to do with Mary's writing career? I think it distracted from the story as that is about him rather than her.

I read this one with my children and both commented on the 'weird' illustrations. We've read many from this series but the oddly angled illustrations just didn't view well for my children, and admittedly, for me either. The style is really appealing except for the angling.

Overall, I just didn't find this story as compelling or relevant as others and wouldn't be the first one I would choose to use from the series.

I really enjoy The Little People, Big Dreams series. They are short, pictorial biographies for historical people, some well-known, others not. Mary Shelley, is well-known for writing Frankenstein. As always, the plot is fast but that’s to be expected in a book geared to younger children, it is a taste of the subject. The story begins with her birth and the loss of her author, mother when she was only eleven days old. When her father remarried, it was like a fairytale with the evil stepmother and her children, Mary did not get along with them at all. She would go to her secret place and write stories. After Mary's wedding, she became interested in the brain and brainwaves, dreaming about a creature made up of body parts. Thus, the creature and the book Frankenstein was born. As with all the books in this series, it features stylish and quirky illustrations and extra facts at the back, including a biographical timeline with historical photos and a detailed profile of the architect's life. This is a child friendly biography with delightful illustrations. It is a story that shows a young woman striving to achieve her dream. This book could be used to teach young children how to write a biography, show that it is important to have a dream and strive to achieve it as well as to introduce them to this little known architect. A good book for a school library.

I thought this book was delightful, and I especially loved the illustration of a young Mary holding hands with Frankenstein's monster. There wasn't a whole lot of information in the book, but I believe that there is enough information to encourage young readers to keep reading and to keep using their imaginations.

This is a nice biography but I’m wondering how important it was to mention in the text about Percy Bysshe Shelley’s marital status when he and Mary ran away together. Personally I think it is a moot point and I would have rather heard other things about her life and writing. I also thought that the timeline was a little too detailed for young readers. That being said it is a good book and the illustrations really set the tone.

Mary Shelley grew up without her Mother from an infant. She grew up in an era where women didn't write and if they did they definitely didn't write horror stories.

Mary met and married Shelley and moved away from London and travelled across Europe. It was there that through a competition Frankenstein was created and tells the story of Victor Frankenstein, a young scientist who conducts experiments on human bodies. Mary Shelley's novel was published anonymously in 1818, when she was just twenty.

I love the Big Dreams series - its a great way to familiarize ourselves with past and present artists who we need to learn about. Illustrated with gothic designs this little book deserves a spot on your bookshelf.
