Jeanne Dams is always a winner at out library. I often recommend her to Anglophile customers who like cosy mysteries.
An excellent addition to this excellent cozy mystery series.
It's great to meet again the well thought characters and to travel with them to a new country.
The mystery is solid and kept me guessing, the setting is vivid and learned a lot about Canada.
An entertaining and engrossing read, highly recommended.
Many thanks to Severn House and Netgalley for this ARC, all opinions are mine.
I have enjoyed this series since the first day.back in 1996. Some were stronger than others, some I enjoyed more than the rest but this one, #22, goes to the list of most enjoyable of the series. While I love England and all of the mysteries set there, this one is set in my back yard and it showed all of the delights and short comings of Victoria and the rest of Vancouver Island. This one works well as a stand alone and if you get the time, please spend some time on the Island to visit all of the places Dorothy and Alan enjoyed. Just don't get involved with uncovering a killer.
As a retired police officer, Alan is contacted by an RCMP officer with a request to come to Victoria and assist with a series of seemingly unrelated petty incidents. Friends of Dorothy and Alan who are also connected to the RCMP officer offer to foot the bill to fly them to Victoria and they are then offered the use of a condo and a car. They may be a long way from home (eight time zones) but they have a good support system to guide them around the island. Soon things move from petty crimes like tossing paint on the tents in the homeless camp and stealing plants from Butchart Gardens to homicide. I'll say no more to prevent a risk of spoilers.
I came away from this mystery having enjoyed the puzzle to solve and the armchair revisit to a city and Island that I will never tire of. A win-win. My thanks to the publisher Severn House and to NetGalley for giving me an advance copy in exchange for my honest review.
Dorothy and her husband Alan are happy to travel to Victoria BC to help a friend of a friend with petty crime that's plaguing not only the town and seems to be escalating. It's a nice change of place for them and it shouldn't be hard work but then, of course, there's a murder. They are out of their comfort zone in terms of local knowledge but their expertise shines through. Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC. It's a classic couple cozy sort of novel that moves a tad slowly but is still a good read.
This was a different entry in the Dorothy Martin series, set in the lovely city of Victoria, BC, and it was nice to read about some of the city's well known attractions (which I can attest to). I find it a bit far-fetched to think that local police or the RCMP would tolerate anyone insinuating themselves into an investigation, but nevertheless, it is a good solid mystery.
I absolutely love this long-running cozy series featuring American turned Brit, Dorothy Martin, and her British husband, Alan, a retired policeman. Part of why I love this series is their home setting, I especially like when they "stay at home" in their small English village. Lately, though, they've been traveling and, in this particular instance, a trip to Canada, namely Victoria, BC, was an intriguing locale for a Dorothy Martin mystery.
The crimes may seem petty at first but things soon intensify and Dorothy and Alan need to start using their strong sleuthing skills to help the RCMP aka, the Mounties. Along the way, we learn about Canada's First Nations people, falconry, and gardens. As is typically true, I learn a lot from a Jeanne Dams mystery.
Once again, this is an outstanding mystery with charming characters and a delightful setting.
Long may this series run. Highly recommended!!
A Deadly Task....
Dorothy and husband Alan are off to Vancouver Island in, this, Book 22 in the Dorothy Martin series of mysteries. They have been specifically tasked with looking into a series of seemingly petty crimes in the area and they soon settle into local life with both ease and enjoyment. However, matters soon take a deadly turn when a body is discovered and their task becomes more dangerous than they could have ever envisioned. A thoroughly entertaining read with likeable protagonists in Dorothy and Alan.
Jeanne Dams takes her sleuth Dorothy Martin to unfamiliar territory when she and her husband Alan, a retired policeman, travel to Vancouver. When Dorothy receives a call from a friend requesting their help for her uncle, they are happy to travel from their English village to visit Victoria. There have been a number of acts of vandalism and thefts and retired Mountie John McKenzie has taken an interest as the cases accelerate. Dorothy and Alan’s arrival allows a new perspective on these events.
Dorothy Martin is a retired teacher who exhibits patience and an ability to observe the people around her. She is a sympathetic character who people can open up to. Paired with Alan, who uses skills developed in law enforcement, they make a formidable team. The petty crimes accelerate to murder and they find themselves up against an influential businessman and a woman who is hiding her true identity. While the story opens at a slow pace as Dorothy and Alan adjust to new surroundings, the pace quickens as their investigation changes from petty crimes to murder.
Dams allows her readers to see the beauty of Victoria and its’ surrounding areas through her characters’ eyes. From Buchart Gardens, where plants have been stolen, to the center of Cowichan culture and a visit to a raptor habitat, it is a tribute to this area. This is an enjoyable mystery with delightful characters that provides an easy read. I would like to thank NetGalley and Severn House Publishers for providing this book in exchange for my review.
I really enjoyed this one and loved the setting of the book . It was just a really good fast paced read
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for letting me review this book
I always enjoy the adventures of Dorothy Martin (though I do wonder what's happened to her hats), and this episode sends Dorothy and Alan to Canada. The change of scenery brought a freshness to the story, which was a little darker than the usual, but a good read.
I received a digital ARC from NetGalley.
I received this ARC via Netgalley and Severn House, in return for an honest review. This is the latest book in this series but easily read as a stand-alone. American Dorothy Martin and her English husband, Alan Nesbitt, are invited by good friends to investigate a series of petty crimes in Victoria, British Columbia. As a retired Detective Chief Inspector, Alan has the experience to determine what is and isn’t worth the time of the over-worked and thinly stretched Victoria police force. Since moving to England and marrying Alan, the previously widowed Dorothy has also learned quite a bit about investigations and suspects. The trip is filled with exploring Victoria and realizing that multiple issues are percolating beneath the surface. When a local politician and businessman is murdered and a young First Nations woman goes missing, Dorothy and Alan are determined to find out what happened to both. As always, Ms. Dams delivers an excellent story with clearly defined characters and setting. She writes to the strengths of both Dorothy and Alan. The descriptions of Vancouver and the local First Nations culture make you start planning a visit. The mystery is good, showing her skill with the genre. I look forward to the next in the series.
The warm and wonderful Dorothy Martin is back - this time in Canada. Fans will enjoy the couple's investigations in a new part of the world, exploring Native Peoples, botanical gardens, and wild birds. High marks to author Dams who always gives the reader more than a mystery.
This is another solid book in the Dorothy Martin series. This book finds Dorothy Martin and her husband traveling to Canada to help a friend's relative with a spot of trouble plaguing his fair city Things are worse than they seem and it isn't long before there's a murder. I find Jeanne Dams' characters charming and she always manages to write settings so marvelously that I feel that I'm there.
