I received an advance reading copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. This book is so great for kids. It’s very informative, cute and cleaver. I enjoyed reading it and I believe kids will too. The pictures were adorable and the facts weren’t too complex for children. While I personally did not learn anything new, I think this book is a great start for children learning about adorable fury animals.
This was a fun, engaging little book, great for the bus ride with bored kids. The words and photos jumped out of the page at me. It also had facts that even I, an experienced cat owner, did not learn. from all my own furry friends,''
Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review*
Moore's A Kid's Guide to Cats & A Kid's Guide to Dogs teaches kids about the two popular pets in a fun and engaging manner. Each goes over basic dog/cat info, body language communication for each, how to catify or dogify your house, training tips, and healthcare. Scattered throughout are kid questions answered by vets, and cool projects for creating safe toys and habitats. I read these with my cubs, and while the info wasn't new to us, the books were engaging and useful. I especially found the body language, and training sections useful. I especially like that the cat book stresses that cats are very intelligent, but need to be trained differently. Highly recommended, especially if you are planning to bring a doggo or kitty into the family.
***Many thanks to the Netgalley & Storey Publishing for providing an egalley in exchange for a fair and honest review.
So glad I had the opportunity to read and review this book.
5 stars.
Well done. Not just for kids, l totally lived it! I am a cat lady, I have 3 furry monsters at home.
Full of interesting info and beautiful photos...
Amazing! I totally recommend it.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC of this book. This is my honest review. All opinions are my own.
A Kid’s Guide to Cats by Arden Moore was Sophie’s second book of the month. This is a fun yet practical guide book aimed at middle-grade readers who want to take on more responsibility looking after their pet cats and covers everything from diet and health to understanding body language and some basics on training your cat to do tricks. A matching book titled A Kid’s Guide to Dogs is also available from the same author.
The book is divided into four sections, “My Cat, My Pal,, “Make a Happy Home For Your Cat,” “School Time For Your Cat” and “Be Your Cat’s Best Health Ally.” Every page is colorful and filled with photographs and cartoons, with no large blocks of text, which makes this book both easy-to-read as a whole and also easy to dip in and out of as a reference book. There are multiple Ask the Vet sections with frequently asked questions, pros, and cons to letting your cat go outdoors, a printable chore chart, and lists of suitable and unsuitable treat foods – did you know cats can enjoy apple slices and bananas? There are also some quizzes scattered throughout.
At the beginning of the book we are introduced to the author – Arden – and, most importantly, her cat Casey. Casey is a friendly orange tabby and he pops up throughout the book in little “Casey’s Comment” boxes where he gives a cat’s perspective on the current subject. Casey’s Comments are always funny and my ten-year-old cat-loving son found them to be some of his favorite parts of the book.
Despite owning cats for 15 years, Sophie still discovered interesting facts in this book that she didn’t know about the small furry creatures that share her home. Cat-loving kids will love A Kid’s Guide to Cats and adults new to cat ownership may well find it easier to digest than many lengthy guides to the subject aimed at them.
I received a complimentary review copy of #AKidsGuideToCats from #NetGalley
This book is "for kids" but it has so much useful information that adults will also learn a lot about being a good cat owner. A little bonus is that all of the photos are absolutely stunning so even if you don't end up using this book as a reference guide, it's worth keeping on the coffee table just to flip through. The book balances information on how to care for a pet cat with more "fun" pages like history of cats or how to make DIY cat houses and toys. That said, it's very heavy on the cat facts and mostly emphasizes how to keep a pet cat safe and happy, and ends with a great list of web resources to learn more.
Princess Fuzzypants here: As a Maine Coon, I believe it is never too early to introduce children to the wonder that is feline. We are amazing creatures- smart, independent , gorgeous and loving. We make super pets so the more kids know about us, the easier it will be for us to train them, as we must do with all humans. In fact, if we can train them young enough it may reduce the efforts required to train older humans. But I digress.
This is a terrific book filled with simple but informative text and great photos. It covers a myriad of topics all of which will help our little humans appreciate and serve us well. That is good for everyone. In fact, I highly recommend this for all future cat slaves.
Five purrs and two paws up.
This is a very colorful and educational book intended for kids, which means there are lots of pictures !! Such a pleasure to read, and it's a nice idea to let kids with cats in their homes read about how to get along and take care of cats. Five full stars :)
I simply cannot resist a good cat book!! This one is a lovely cat guide intended for kids, as the title suggests. It will make a lovely gift to families with felines, or would be families as well.
I would like to thank the publisher for giving me a copy of this book via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
What a wonderfully engrossing book! It is more than educational but also fun to read. Includes a little trivia but what kids will really like is the cat Casey who has some insights into feline behavior as well as a few other well-placed comments from guest cats. Glad for tips on training cats as most people don’t believe they are trainable. Loved this book and even taught this experienced cat person a few tricks!!
I received an advanced reader copy from NetGalley in exchange for my volunteer review.
I must thank Storey Publishing for allowing me to read the ARC edition of this book through Netgalley.
This is really cool guide not only for children but also for adult cat carers, especially for the first-time owners. I've read a bunch of cat guides, each had its own merits, but this one covers everything in a way children (and adults) can easily understand. Adults who are already familiar with the subject can still find themselves inspired to try something new!
The advice range from the history and species trivia to general care and understanding of your pets' anatomy and behavioral cues, to some specific health and other subjects (such as adoption, dangers in and out of your home, training, food choice, health check, vet visits etc.) and do-it-yourself projects for your pets' entertainment and safety. The visuals and side notes are so cute and very entertaining, which is helpful for children to keep paying attention. I liked step-by-step advice and hints that may ameliorate relationships of children (and adults!) with pets. I think it still isn't a book for very young children, but rather for those aged 8 and up, but youngsters might easily follow it with their parents' help. I liked also a recommended reading list at the end, very useful for first-time owners who wish to go into more detail.
My nine year old daughter wants to be a vet more than anything, and this was a great way for her to get engaged in understanding more about cats and what their individual mannerisms mean. It is also helping her out with our cats! Greatly illustrated and shows things very visually. Would definitely recommend!
This is a great nonfiction title! What I really like about this book is that it is well organized without overloading you with information. Different sections are broken up with fun DIY projects and there are, of course, lots of adorable cat pictures. As a cat lover, I appreciated the research that went into this title. It is up-to-date with tons of great information that many cat owners have yet to encounter. Any child that reads this book will know lots about cats and be able to be a great cat caretaker!
A great book to purchase for your child if you are getting a cat.
Author makes it easier for child to understand all that they need to do to care for their cat.
My 5 year old cat-lover and I read this together. She enjoyed the photos and information about cats. A great tool for a newer cat owner.
First of all I need to bring attention to the fact that in Thai/Vietnamese cat is meo (maow) and I just think that’s too adorable.
This is a great book to teach people about cats. Tips, information and the basics. It even includes a section on training. Because cats are smart and can be trained which is absolutely amazing!
This is probably the best book I’ve seen on cats for kids. It’s fun. It’s informative. I loved all the history included as well.
Miss Fiona (8) and I read this together today and we both enjoyed it immensely.
This is a fantastic, fun and informative guide to cats for kids. It works for kids who have never owned a cat and are getting one for the first time, but also for kids with cats who want to do things like make them fun items, take care of them, and even teach them a few tricks. We've owned cats for all of my kids' lives and I don't know that we ever tried to teach them tricks, even though we're always teaching tricks to the dog. Now my youngest is determined to teach one of our cats to shake paws and some of the other tricks, and she's also excited to make a cat hidey hole box with a box and a t-shirt (pull the shirt over the opening so the neck makes a big circle for the cat to crawl in, and then tie the shirt over the other end), among other projects. I was also happy to find out that the chirp of our rescue cat, Lola (who was completely feral and terrified of people when we first met her and slowly grew to trust me over months, then disappeared and was finally located again when she was less than 2 pounds and hours from death, who is now an inside rescue cat and the most loving, beautiful, sweet cat) is typically the sound that some cats make when they are happy to see their favorite person. I always thought her strange chirp was just her meow, but that was very nice to read. :)
The book is filled with funny and informative photographs and cute little sayings from the cat narrator. This is likely to be enjoyed by kids of all ages, and helpful for their cats too.
I read a temporary digital ARC of this book for the purpose of review.
We have three cats and have had cats all my life so NATURALLY I AM OBSESSED WITH THEM.
This book is everything I wanted and more.
Yes, it's a kid's guide to cats but that means nothing in the grand scheme of things.
This ladies and gentlemen is a guide for all of us kitty cat lovers. It is a guide to everything cats. From cat condos, the type of cats, and even the type of treats you should be giving your favorite feline friend.
I really can't sing my praises about this book enough so I will just tell you that it'll be much better for you if you go out and purchase it yourself because yes, it is that good and there are pictures on

Thank you very much to Netgalley and the publisher for this copy of my ARC. All opinions are my own.
I really wanted to be super positive about this book but I just can't.
The cover is clearly appealing and the title conveys what the book is about, but....and this is a big but....It perhaps misses the mark of the actual intended audience. My 5yo daughter chose this one as the cover appealed - the cute kitten and the bubbles of writing in bright colours - perfect for "kids". The issue I had was that while the cover screams "this is a book for kids" the content isn't. There are some pages that are fantastically presented like "How to approach a cat" but all too often the other pages had dense paragraphs of information. Don't get me wrong, it's good information but not what a "kid" would read.
I personally think that the content's target audience isn't clear. I would recommend this for older children, tweens and teens, about 10-15 yo. due to the complexity of the information and the way it's presented in paragraph form. I also think the title should be reconsidered.
Good information but cover/title target the wrong audience.
This is an excellent and informative guide to looking after cats, designed for children. It has lovely, colourful illustrations and photographs throughout. It is packed with useful information, not only on how to care for your cat, but also on how to cheaply make toys, boxes, scratching posts and so on. I really love the fact that as well as the basics (food, water, vets etc), it also tells you how to train your cat - both for fun, and to make necessary things (eg nail trims, vet trips etc) far less stressful for you and your cat.
This guide wouldn’t be suitable for very young children (though you could read it to them), but is very much aimed at the child (or children) taking responsibility for looking after the pet themselves. If I had a child who wanted a cat, this would definitely be the guide I’d buy for them.
I was given a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
