"Monster Allergy" by Katja Centomo is a delightful and imaginative graphic novel that offers a perfect blend of humor, adventure, and fantasy. Centomo's engaging storytelling is complemented by vibrant illustrations that bring to life a world where monsters are not only real but also intertwined with everyday life.
The protagonist, Zick, is a young boy with the unique ability to see and communicate with monsters, thanks to his peculiar allergy. This premise sets the stage for a series of charming and exciting escapades as Zick navigates both the challenges of his special abilities and the trials of growing up. Centomo does a fantastic job of balancing the whimsical elements with relatable themes of friendship, bravery, and self-discovery.
The artwork is colorful and dynamic, perfectly capturing the quirky and endearing nature of the characters and their fantastical world. The monsters, each with their own distinct personalities and designs, add a layer of fun and creativity to the narrative. The pacing of the story is well-managed, keeping readers engaged with a mix of light-hearted moments and thrilling encounters.
"Monster Allergy" is a captivating read for children and adults alike. Katja Centomo has crafted a world that is both magical and heartwarming, making it easy for readers to lose themselves in Zick's adventures. This graphic novel is a must-read for fans of fantasy and those who appreciate a well-told, visually stunning story.
I loved it !! I’m so obsessed with it and I need more of it. The style was fantastic. I love the colour
This is a fun setup for kids. Elena Potato moves into town and next door to the odd kid in town, Zick. Turns out he can see monsters and talk to ghosts. After the initial setup they have a little adventure when they find out pets in town are going missing and the two have to find out who is stealing and killing these pets.
This was really fun. A new girl moves in next door and wants to be friends with the weird eccentric next door, even though all the other kids think he is a freak. He is a freak. He can see monsters and talk to dead people. That is just part of what makes this such a fun read. I like to see a character that wants to hang with the strange and unusual instead of always trying to be popular. A great and fun read for any age. I can not wait to pick up book 2.
Monster Allergy is a fun example of a graphic novel and would be a great introduction for future young fans of the genre. I'm personally just getting into graphic novels and am encouraging my students to enjoy the genre for appreciation of both art and storytelling.
It was a quick read and left me wanting more! Luckily there are 4 books in the series to enjoy. This took me back to my childhood.
I think my students, some of whom are learning English as a second language, would really enjoy this story.
It's a little spooky with the monsters around town, and funny at the same time, and would be perfect for reading around Halloween.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publishers for an advance copy of the book in exchange for my honest review.
Reasonable juvenile comic, where a new girl in town sets up an unlikely friendship with the boy next door, who claims to have every allergy under the sun, communes with his dead grandparents and can see copious monsters everywhere he looks. Together they get in some shenanigans and some mild peril when her cat goes missing – has it ended up cooked and eaten at the local restaurant? It's not entirely convincing about them combining – it seems forced on them by some stuttering bullies and not anything more realistic – and the book has to play fast and loose with these allegedly fatal allergies the lad has, but the drama isn't too bad. Artwork certainly goes for a kids' TV cartoon aesthetic, but also is reasonable, and better than some similar titles. With four books to go for in the whole series, you might get to like these oddball characters and care for the drama their part of town provides for.
'Monster Allergy #1' by Katja Centomo and Francesco Artibani with art by Alessandro Barbucci is a graphic novel for younger readers featuring a strange young man who can see things that others can't.
Elena Potato has a hard enough time with her last name, but now she is the new kid in town. When she is warned off of meeting the weird kid next door, that's the first thing she does. She meets Zick, who is allergic to everything and sees monsters. Now the pets in town are missing, and the trail seems to lead to a high end restaurant. Can Elena and Zick solve the mystery?
I liked this quirky story with it's odd characters and fun art. The story would have completely appealed to a middle school version of myself.
I received a review copy of this graphic novel from Europe Comics and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for allowing me to review this graphic novel.
I was lucky to receive an arc of Monster Allergy by Script by Katja Centomo, Francesco Artibani - Art by Alessandro Barbucci, Barbara Canepa which is a children's graphic novel. When Elena moves to Oldmill Village she meets her new neighbour called Zick who not only has allergies he can see ghosts and monsters. The graphic novel follows the two main characters who are looking for Elena's missing cat. I loved the artwork and the story flowed I also love Zick and Elena interaction with each other and can't wait to see what they get upto next. For this reason I am giving this 4 stars.
This was a super fun read! I know my patrons will be clamoring for this title with its fun artwork, spunky characters, and fun plot!
Dark, creepy and funny
House of Monsters is the start of the Monster Allergy series. Elena moves to the town of Bigbug which was called Oldmill village long time ago. Next to her lives a guy, everyone is avoiding because something is for sure strange about him.
A fun read with amazing illustrations for kids around 9-12 years and older of course. The story is filled with fun and monsters, ghosts and a hilarious mad cat, which made the first book for me with her comments. The story is unexpected and has nice twists and is as well dark and bit creepy - perfect for the monster story. A surprisingly fun read, we cannot wait for the other parts of the series…
