Having used Allen Carr’s stop smoking book with great success, I was disappointed in this. It just felt a bit one size fits all. Not great.
I felt the book was a bit repetitive and was hoping for so much more. I actually abandoned reading it part way through because I found it felt like it was a revision a previous book to market to a new demographic.
I have heard of Allen Carr for a number of years and when this book became available I decided to give it a try. The3re were a number of good suggestions that I am trying to put into effect in my life.
I have read a lot of books about emotional eating and I don’t think this book offers anything new despite it’s claims. I found its superior tone irritating and it lacked any real, practical help in how people can change their mindset just a lot of reasons about why we emotionally eat. In my opinion, there are other books on this topic which do it a lot better.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for providing me with a free e-copy of this book in exchange for my honest opinion.
I grew up with lots of self-help/ self-improvement books around the house, from my grandma's favorite How to Win Friends and Influence People and Chicken Soup for the Soul to my mom's Life's Little Instruction books and Seven Habits series. Often those books contain many of the same ideas as newer favorites, just packaged a little differently for prevailing psychological theory and aesthetic tastes.
This book feels a little dated, both in design and writing style. Which makes sense, as the originator of the method has died and the author is applying the method to new problems. I think in theory, there are a lot of helpful ideas here, but perhaps for wide commercial success in the 21st century, they need to be reworked into the current dialogues of mindfulness, CBT, or even stoicism (which is making quite the 2,000-year comeback!).
But as always, I hope this book and this method can help some folks on their journeys.
Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for a digital ARC.
Another honest and simple to follow self help manual from Allen Carr this time looking at emotional eating. As someone who has struggled with this all her life this book although full of obvious knowledge of why we do this and why we shouldn’t it has a handy and easy guide to help you finally beat it and get back to eating for hunger and also pleasure without dieting or punishing yourself.
I'd heard of Allen Carr and his smoking cessation program so I was curious how that would translate to emotional eating. This book puts eating junk food in a completely different light. Once you start disecting your beliefs on "comfort food", you question its importance in your life and giving up junk food seems possible. I would recommend this book to anyone who struggles with emotional eating.
Usual demise of Allan Carr’s, easy to understand and if inclined, follow. Did use Allan’s model successfully when giving up smoking. Thank you for the opportunity to read and review.
Allen Carr's Easy Way to Quit Emotional Eating is a self-help book to deal with disordered eating but it doesn't really offer anything new.
Frankly, I didn’t find anything new here. Most of the book explains why we eat emotionally instead of from hunger. Here and there he throws in points that have already been covered by other writers such as Geneen Roth. For me, the only thing that has stopped my emotional eating has been the practice of EFT Tapping. There is something powerful about addressing the way our brains and bodies handle stress and overeating from stress, and this book does not address this at all.
Thanks to NetGalley, the author and publisher for an advanced reading copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
First of all, there is no "easy" way to quit a lifetime of emotional eating. Second, this book had a lot of the same methods that I have heard before and that have worked in the short term in the past.
This is a very informative book on the perils of Emotional Eating. A fairly quick read though, but I thought it needed just a little more detail on the actions of the plan. Its an excellent book for giving details of why we emotionally eat but not really enough detail for me on how to stop. I understand the concept of having an awareness of the ways we eat and what we eat and this has certainly been useful for me.
This is definitely worth a read if you are looking for eating support as it has some very good advice on why we eat as we do. Any eye opener!
Thank you Arcturus Publishing and NewGalley.
I’ve often heard people talking about Allen Carr’s book about quitting smoking so I was curious to see if this would be good. Definitely has some good tips to help control emotional eating. Not sure if those work long term but will be happy to try and hope succeed.
I voluntarily read this ARC for an honest review - all thoughts and opinions are mine and unbiased
This is the first time I've read this author and found it a quick, informative read. Could have had more detail for me but overall a good, fast read
Allen Carr is know for his Easyway method and has now applied it to emotional eating. If you've read any of his other books, this is set up in the same manner. The information was good and laid out why people eat junk or overeat to comfort themselves. When it comes to time to explain how to stop, it is fairly short. You just do it. I wish he had explained that process a little more thoroughly. Overall a quick and informative read.
