The Sight of You is just a wonderful story. It tells the story of Joel and Callie who meet, get to know each other and fall in love. However, there's a sting in the tail as Joel has dreams where he can foresee things happening. Without giving too much away, this is a love story on another level. It really needs to be read to understand it.
I was thankful to Netgalley for providing me with the opportunity to read this wonderful book in exchange for an honest review.
I will definitely be recommending this book to friends and fellow book lovers.
Oh, what an emotional ride!
Imagine having a gift that could give so much joy, but at the same time, suck the joy of living from you?
This was what life was like for Joel, and what stopped him from fully living his own life.
And Callie? A simple, loveable woman, who isn't quite sure where here future lies, until she meets Joel.
Add in Murphy, Callie's dog, and you have a beautiful bittersweet love story, with an ending you didn;t expect... or did you?
I absolutely loved this story of Joel and Callie, and their forever love, that just wasn't meant to be.
Descriptive, emotive writing that kept me reading all day, so I could finish the book, all the while not wanting it to end.
Many thanks to NetGalley and Hodder and Stoughton for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Firstly – this book is BEAUTIFULLY written. It’s like a classic written now – you can imagine kids studying the amazing descriptions and sentence construction and the way it draws you right in – particularly when describing the seasons / weather / nature – it is stunning. I know I shouldn’t be surprised – but often modern books feel a bit rushed, or on a production line because the author / publisher has a deadline – but it really feels like this book has been crafted and lots of care and attention to detail taken over the turn of phrase.
It is also ridiculously emotional! You are invested in Callie and Joel from the off and really want everything to work out for them – but it’s difficult to see how it will. Each chapter is written from an alternating point of view – and it swings like a pendulum between Callie and Joel.
Initially the pace is quite slow, day by day even, and you see how their initial friendship and then relationship starts. You are really rooting for both Callie and Joel and their respective baggage. The exquisite writing doesn’t take away from the fact that this is a modern book, set in current times, with familiar themes and settings.
As the book carries on the pace picks up – and the final chapters are almost annual – but it serves to build the momentum as it heads towards the conclusion. The inevitable conclusion perhaps?
It made be weep (which frankly anything does at the moment – but I think I would have even if we weren’t in the middle of a global pandemic!) It is beautiful, heart breaking, life affirming, a story of friends and family and a perfect love story.
This book is going to be one of THE books of the summer of 2020 – so I would suggest pre ordering now, so you can be one of the cool kids who reads it first!
Huge thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for my ARC – I will most definitely be buying this as gifts for friends come June 2020.
I'm not sure were to start with this one. I absolutely adored it.
To start off with its not entirely my favourite genre of book - maybe with whats going on in the world I wanted to escape, and escape I did. I am not much for soppy and romance but I was somehow drawn to this book and lets say it did not disappoint.
This is truly a page turning debut - so much so I had to stop and check that this in fact was Holly Millers first book.
This is going to be a summer sell out - we are not talking sex or lust but a tale of love and sacrifice that will at some point have you crying. If you could see into the future what would you do with it?
Such a well written book this is a romance story with a difference and I bet will be turned into a movie.
Joel our main character is a dreamer, but he only dreams about people he knows and loves. Because Joel is special, he can see into the future with his dreams, he becomes a little bit of a recluse because of this. Knowing he cannot change his dreams in real life he doesn't want to risk love anymore. Joel doesn't want to see the future of someone he loves so he avoids people at all costs.
But when Callie enters his Realm things could be different. Joel slowly allows himself to fall in love against his better judgment and the story unravels.
I cant say to much because I would ruin it for you... but set across six years we hear narration from Joel and Callie. Poor Joel in agony because he knows whats going to happen in the future. Does he tell Callie and does Callie want to know what he sees in his dreams? How would you react? Would you want to know what Joel dreamt about you?
You'll have to read it to find out.
With such a depth to Joel and his love for Callie he lives his life with realism and sacrifices that Im not sure I could make.
The exchange at the train station and the last scene had me gasping so much that my dogs came over to check I was ok. The characters lift you up, and are perfect examples of how you can be happy in life, whatever it throws at you.
A gloriously beautiful novel that comes recommended, you'll sit and devour it. Holly Miller I am waiting for you next story. I hope it comes soon.
Five starts is not enough. Thank you for the advanced copy.
Heartbreakingly wonderful. The author sure knows how to pull on the heartstrings without being overly sentimental. Read this book.
I loved this book from start to finish. Joel & Callie are both very private people not looking for a relationship. Joel avoids connecting with anyone because of his foreseeing the future in his dreams. Callie is getting over the death of her best friend. For many reasons they decide to take a chance on each other and enter into a relationship where they very quickly fall in love with each other. Everything is fine until Joel dreams of he way it will end.
This is when the heartbreak really starts. Their relationship ends and Callie eventually meets someone else. Has Joel done the right thing? Time will tell!
This is a very modern day tragic love story which can’t fail to bring a tear to the eye of even a hardened reader. Definitely one hat will stay with me for a while.
Aww this story was so lovely and the way callie and Joel's relationship unfolded was delightful but then imagine loving someone but knowing when and where they are going to die. Do you stay with them or let them go to enjoy the rest of their life?
This book made me cry in a sad but also happy kind of way.
I warm, thoughtful and emotional read that I read in one day during lockdown.
Heartbreaking, genuine and so full of emotions.
I loved reading this book, it was gripping. I felt that the plot is very original and equally well written. You can see the dilemmas the characters face as they fall hard but the future hangs over their heads.
How wonderful it was to be a part of their love story
The Sight of You
A truly beautiful love story that will make you weep. All the stars for this book that will hit you right in the feels and force you to become emotionally invested.
Thanks to @netgalley & @hodderbooks for the chance to read this contemporary fiction which will now be one of my go to recommendations. Publishing June 2020 💕
Oh Joel and Callie 💕 meet them, love them and want to be besties with them. This book oozes love. Self-sacrificing love, making the hardest decisions to protect the ones you love.
Joel an ex Vet has made a pact with himself to not fall in love. In the interest of others because Joel has the ability to see disastrous incidents before they occur in his dreams. Then we meet Callie while working in a cafe alongsideher dog Murphy, she stumbles into his life. A character he can't help but fall in love with. Callie changes it all for Joel. Their paths are crossed and there is no going back.
A book that's both uplifting and heartbreaking rolled into one. A love story with a difference.
A beautiful love story and heartbreaking moments but like in real life, these characters are the perfect examples of how many people are going through their life with love and happiness being the priority of everything they do.
We all want to be clairvoyant at least one time in life and maybe to even know when and how this life will end but would you believe it if you’re finding that out? Would you take every opportunity to get to do all the things you want in life? Or would you just carry on living your life like that “what if” moment never happened?
I must admit that this story brought a few tears in my eyes and the way the author has managed to build up al the angst and emotional turmoil that the characters are going through added to this beautiful story.
I’m a very moody reader but this one was perfect for me at this time.
Not usually my type of book as I am not really a lover of romance novels. But this was a very welcome exception! It was beautifully written and I just fell into it and let myself go along for the ride. Loved it and would recommend.
Many thanks to the author, publisher and NetGalley for an advance copy in exchange for a honest review.
This book will be loved by fans of Jo Jo Moyes. It has the too-good-to-be-true love story, lashings of gorgeous men, heart warming animal vignettes and oodles of tear jerking opportunities. Told in the 'she says, he says' split narrative you can relish how truly thoughtful and considerate the men are, and how the women are so honest and vulnerable. It was a bit like eating a whole Easter Egg, enjoyable at the start but I felt a little sick at the end, over indulged and in need of something less treacly.
So many thanks to Netgalley, Holly Mills and the publisher for the absolute pleasure in reading and reviewing this book. I can not over state how much I enjoyed this book. The story of Joel and Callie was so beautiful it moved me to tears many times. . Joel has a bittersweet gift whereby he dreams of the future of his loved ones. They are not always good dreams. When he meets and falls in live with Callie he tries to build a normal life..until the night he dreams of Callie. Will this change their lives forever. Can he change the path of Callies destiny. Please read this book. It is simply amazing.
Thank you to NetGalley and Hodder and Stoughton for allowing me to read an eARC of this book.
Oh wow this one got me right in the feels. I was legit tearing up towards the end and had to frantically stop myself from crying in the middle of the living room. I don't even have the words to describe how much this book got to me. It's both uplifting and heartbreaking at the same time and i'm always amazed at a book that manages to do that.
I'm normally one to steer clear of books that look to be soppy and romantic but there was just something about this book that drew me in on NetGalley and so I had to request it. I am so glad I did because it wasn't what I expected at all; this isn't a soppy romance book, it is so much more than that. It's a book about powerful and self-sacrificing love and how sometimes you have to make a decision that might just break your heart. Watching Joel slowly fall in love with Callie, against his better judgement, knowing what this could lead to just pulled me in. You could feel his restraint but also his inability to not love her.
I don't know what I would do if I had Joel's ability; whilst in one way it allows you an insight into your life it also takes away any aspect of surprise and takes away the reality of life. I think i'd want to be like Callie; not knowing whats going to happen for fear of it stopping you living your life.
I loved the chapters after their relationship ended; they were painful but also uplifting watching both of them slowly find a new way to navigate their life. The scene at the train station almost destroyed me but the last scene of them together just down right destroyed me. Callie's realisation that this was it just got to me and the dam broke.
I think this is a book that will stay with me for a while and is definitely one that I recommend to others; it's a book that will sink into your very soul and just stay there. I couldn't put it down and I will be definitely getting a physical copy of this book when it comes out!!!
Really not what I imagined this book to be from the cover. Callie works in a café and one day in walks Joel – and it is pretty much love at first sight. But Joel has a secret. Since he was a child, he’s had dreams about things that are going to happen to the people he loves. From a cousin getting attacked by a dog, to his mother dying of cancer. Just a few times he’s told others, but not been believed. Sometimes he can intervene – like slashing the tyres of a car to prevent a friend crashing his car – but often he can’t help. So he lives a life determined not to get close to anyone. But meeting Callie changes everything. After a year together – he has a dream. He knows that she’ll die and when, but not how. He wants to tell her, but she doesn’t want to know. So they tearfully break up, with Joel telling her that the best is yet to come. 400 pages and an unusual premise – and brings up the question of how you might live your life differently if you knew when it would end. Callie travels the world, changes job, finds her passion, true love and a family, and then Joel is there at the end. Brilliant!
The deliciously enjoyable and heartbreakingly frustrating story of Callie & Joel. The characterisation leaps off the page bringing Callie & Joel to life so much that I feel bereft now the story has finished, alongside the brilliantly descriptive writing. There are friends and family surrounding the two main characters, all of whom were scripted realistically and as for Murphy, the dog ❤️. There are some paragraphs so beautifully written that I have highlighted them to keep!
If ever two people were meant to be together it was Callie & Joel, whose complicated lives raise issues to keep them apart. The story is told from alternate narrators and jumps in time counting down to the main event. No plot spoilers so my review will be short, I was totally emotionally involved and loved reading how their lives evolved - I am now drained! Wondering if only.......
This book is beautifully written. I loved the many thoughtful descriptions that Miller used. It felt fresh. As for the characters, they were all wonderfully written too. I particularly connected with Joel. And as for the story, well, it's an excellent idea. If you're wanting a love story with a difference, this is the book for you. I thought the ending was done well, although it's not the ending you want. It is a tear jerker, but what made me the most sad was the decision Joel made regarding his and Callie's future. I wanted him to choose differently. I felt that after that point I wanted to rush through to see what happened, and sometimes it felt like the story was coasting. Did Joel make the right decision? I don't know. I keep thinking about this, which means even though I've finished the book the story has stayed with me. Definitely thought-provoking, and yes, highly recommended.
With thanks to NetGalley for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
So great to read a different take on the usual romance novel love story. It took me a few chapters to really get into the swing of things and sink my teeth into the story line, but then I couldn't wait to read more.
The characters are easy to relate to and I found myself really feeling for Joel and Callie. Not all love stories have a happy ending for both parties.
How much are you willing to sacrifice for the greatest love of your life?
Would you enter into love if you already knew how it was going to end?
Utterly heartbreaking!
I’ve just finished reading this book and I’m in absolute bits! I couldn’t put it down as I was so desperate to find out what happened to Callie and Joel.
What a wonderful story/concept and so well executed. I felt every moment of it . This is a story that will stay with me for a long time.
Joel and Callie are perfect for each other. Their chemistry is palpable, their adoration for each other so pure. But Joel has an affliction; he dreams the future of anyone he loves; good, bad, and indifferent and the bad haunts him. Disrupting relationships and getting in the way of happiness.
I loved this book. The characters were kind and likeable, it was well written and the story grips throughout. As always, when fate is the bad guy it was fairly heartbreaking. A stonker of a tear jerker.
