This is a great addition to the Mike Croft series and is full of suspense! I highly recommend this series to anyone looking for a new series that is full of excellent writing, full developed characters, and lots of suspense!
john Tynan, retired Detective Inspector, can't believe it when a woman he's been seeing for a very short time is found stabbed to death in her hotel room. Martha Toolin was visiting the area and not a lot was known about her.
She was there researching her family ..so she said. She also said she had no children .. but who was the young man who showed up at the hotel looking for his mother?
John's friend, Detective Mike Croft, is called in to investigate and soon discovers that Martha wasn't her real name and she was a con artist. So what did she want with Tynan?
The more Croft investigates, with a little help from Tynan, the more he finds that she was not a well liked person. And more than one person wanted her dead.
And then .. another body is found on the beach.
Although 4th in the series, this is easily read as a stand alone. This is a well written crime fiction with credible recurring characters. It's a real page turner with lots of twists and turns and the suspense is steady from the very first page to the very last page.
Many thanks to the author / Joffe Books / Books N All Book Promotions / Netgalley for the digital copy of this Psychological Crime Thriller. Read and reviewed voluntarily, opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.
A first time for me reading a book by this author but enjoyed it so have now started reading the first book in the series as they are stand alone but with the same main characters. The Liar is very intricate as the woman who is killed in the early stages is not who she seems and then there is the teenage boy. Is he her son? Where does the black dog fit in? DI Mike Croft has his own sad history and ex policeman John Tynan is forced to revisit his own troubled and complex family history in an attempt to throw some light on the mystery.
I really enjoyed this book which I would have given 5stars had it not been for the supernatural nuances. Good premise. Well written. Relatable characters. A little disappointed at the ending as it left a few unanswered questions. Would definitely read her next offering. Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the chance to review it.
Ex DI John Tyler is spending time with Martha whose researching her family tree. But Martha has been found dead in her room in the B&B she was staying at. DI Mike Croft is leading the investigation. It soon becomes clear that Martha was not she said she was. So who was she?
Although this is an enjoyable read the ending let the book down for me. It's quite abrupt and a few loose ends were left dangling. I did like the main characters but the supernatural parts seemed a little far fetched.
I would like to thank NetGalley, Joffe Books and the author Jane Adam's for my ARC in exchange for an honest review.
An interesting read about deceit and murder. There are some interesting characters and a good storyline.
Thank you to Netgalley for my copy.
This book was a huge disappointment. I kept reading it hoping that it would improve but unfortunately I had to give up reading it.
This book just wasn’t for me
Another five star read from this author. A woman is stabbed in her room why? A mysterious large black dog is terrorizing the local village. This author has done it again, draws you in then you are hooked. Yes a murder mystery and so much more. Nothing is what it seems in this book. I spent most of this read sat on the edge of my seat, holding my breath and tapping my kindle faster and faster. This author just keeps on getting better and better. An easy five stars and so Highly Recommended.
I would like to thank the author, publisher and Netgalley for the ARC.
Thank you NetGalley and Joffe Books for the eARC.
A riveting read I found hard to put down, it features DI Mike Croft and the very appealing ex-DI John Tynan. John has been ferrying around Martha, a possible distant relative, looking for clues as to her family history. When she is stabbed to death Mike gets involved in the investigation and Martha proves to be a shadowy figure who was not who she claimed to be.
A huge Black Dog, a mythical local creature, seems to be real and roaming around the area, giving the story a slight paranormal feel, like Jane Adams' other book The Greenway.
Although I loved the book, I was quite disappointed that Black Dog stayed in the shadows...I wanted to know much, much more about him! Hopefully there will be a follow up where we meet him again, properly. It's a great read, though that I recommend highly.
This is a very well written story with a good plot and excellent characters. Police procedures are often very slow in real life, and this book is really slow as well, even if it moves along all the time.
A superb story about the murder of a seemingly unknown woman - "Martha" a sixtyish woman- who had a date with and went on a couple of visits with retired DI, John Matthews.
After a dinner date, John drops Martha off at the B&B, Two Bells. Martha is stabbed through the heart later.
DI Mike Croft, a friend of John's, is on the case. Somehow there is a link to a "huge" black dog that terrorizes people and other animals.
We find out that Martha is not all that she seems to be. This, with help from John and Tom Pollard, an 18 year old who also spent time with Martha.
Excellent characterization and plotline, RECOMMEND!
Many Thanks to Joffe Books and NetGalley for an intriguing read!
A woman stabbed in her room, a mysterious black dog terrorizing the village......the opening chapter draws you in and hooks straight away and what you think was the murder of an innocent woman soon proves to be wrong
A thrilling and must read for all crime fans
A Corker of a book. John Tynan is courting for the first time since his wife died. Then the woman is murdered and his whole past start to unravel. Are they genuine memories or remembered childhood dreams.
Brilliant, loved it.
I read an advance review copy of this book. This review is voluntary, honest and my own opinion.
