I sincerely hope that is the last book to involve Jacob Ness. For me this was one book too many and it all seemed far fetched and unbelievable.
Huge thanks to NetGalley and Random House UK for the advanced copy of this book.
I am a huge fan of Lisa Gardner and yet again I wasn’t disappointed. The book grabbed my attention from start to finish and I was a bit sorry when it was over.
It kept me guessing all the way through the book as to who was responsible for all the bodies buried in the hills of a town in Georgia . Did the townspeople know and worse still, were they involved?
I haven’t read Lisa Gardner’s books for a while but I may have to start the D.D. Warren series again as I’d forgotten what a brilliant story teller she is.
Another great story from this author. We meet familiar characters and continue the story of some new ones. The authors portrayal of Flora and Bonita is brilliant. It's a great story all round.
Wow!
A great read with a great plot!
Told from three law enforcement perspectives, the search for Jacob Ness- serial kidnapper and killer, now dead but with unaccounted for victims to his name, brings together his sole surviving victim, Flora, alongside the FBI in the voice of Kimberley Quincy and Detective D.D.Warren.
Additionally we read the thoughts of a mute witness, Bonita, who sees more than she should and knows more than she knows how to communicate.
The different narrators bring added depth to both the characters and the plot of the story and the pace is fast moving.
A great coming together of 3 favourite characters!
When You See Me brings together three Gardner heroines - Boston police detective DD Warren, FBI profiler Kimberly Quincey, and survivor and vigilante Flora Dane - into one book, sending them to northern Georgia, where the discovery of human remains has led to the re-examination of the crimes of Jacob Ness, Flora's kidnapper. Joining a task force investigating Ness's potential links to the remains, the three soon discover that the peaceful tourist town in which they're staying holds far darker secrets than expected.
When You See Me was slower paced than some of Gardner's previous books, and her recent increasing focus on recovery from trauma was explored more fully here (both through the character of Dane and through the experiences of a witness). While not my favourite Lisa Gardner, it was nevertheless a good read.
An enjoyable change from my usual genre of British crime, this American based crime thriller kept me intrigued and fully involved from beginning to end. I would fully recommend this book. Would certainly be keeping a watchful eye out for more from Lisa Gardner.
My thanks to NetGalley and publisher Random House UK, Cornerstone, for the ARC.
Wow! - this book has such an unpredictable plot. From the harrowing opening scene told from the point of view of an unnamed 5yr old girl, through a myriad of twists and turns, to a heart-thumping conclusion - this is absolutely gripping!
This story is told alternately between the points of view of Flora Dane - a survivor of a serial kidnapper, Jacob Ness. She's battling with PTSD, always guarded and untrusting, and since her rescue from, and subsequent killing of Ness, has teamed up with Keith Edgar, a computer analyst, to uncover Ness's past victims;
- Detective Sergeant DD Warren (DD), a Boston Homicide detective, has worked with Flora and her vigilante-leanings to solve murders over the years;
and - FBI Special Agent Kimberley Quincy,
as well as first-person narrative from Bonita, a mute teenaged servant who has a talent for drawing..
Kimberley needs a taskforce to re-open cold-cases attributed to Ness following the discovery of a 15yr-old skeleton in the Appalachian mountains and calls on DD, Flora and Keith to join it.
The number of skeletons uncovered near the hiking trails increases dramatically - Why would Ness have been in this area? - a small tourist-dependent town. They begin to enlist the help of the locals to find a connection, leading to lots of surprises, twists and shocks.
Excellent reading.
Another excellent book from Lisa Gardner.
DD is investigating a murder along with Kimberley the FBI agent. Unwittingly they stumble across a mountainside littered with bodies and a town whose inhabitants must have known what was going on, or did they? A mute girl called Bonita is helpful in solving the crimes as a lot of the story is told through her eyes.
Fast paced as many of her books are with likeable characters. A good read.
Fantastic thriller. It was great. Fast paced. Well written and scared me to death. I couldn’t put it down . Love books like this
I absolutely love reading Lisa Gardner's books. Her stories are dark and quite interesting. Having followed the characters; Flora, DD Warren and Kimberly through their various kick-ass stories, I was thrilled to read this one. The suspense and thrill throughout the book was absolutely stunning! The twists and turns kept me awake all night - I had to finish reading the book. It was that engrossing and exciting.
This book is about survival.... Three women who have faced sinister evil in their pasts and overcome it in various ways...now adding the little girl's story too. So glad I was given this opportunity.
Looking forward to more Lisa Gardner books....
When You See Me is the first book I have read in the series but it is perfect as a standalone ,though it does make me want to read the previous books in the series .It is told through three different points of view Flora Dane who is a survivor of rape and kidnap ,Detective DD Warren and FBI Agent Kimberley Quincey, there is also another voice which is not identified until later in the book .The story is fast paced and a little scary at times detectives are investigating some human bones which have been found in an area that Jacob Ness ,Flora's kidnapper is known to have been .The small town of Niche turns out to be not the quiet and sleepy town it first appears but a place full of secrets and evil..I really enjoyed this book and look forward to reading the next in the series .Many thanks to the Publisher ,the Author and NetGalley or my review copy in return for an honest review .
I am a fan of Lisa Gardner so was very keen to read this (and very grateful to be allowed to read it on NetGalley).
When the remains of a body are found in the hills near a small town, it sparks an investigation which widens rapidly when further remains are found. Detective Warren and FBI agent Kimberly Quincy are both called in - and DD brings with her Flora Dane who had been a victim of a now dead serial killer, Jacob Ness. The plot quickly thickens and you wonder who is to be trusted in this small town, because the bodies (both long-dead and very recent) start piling up.
A fast-paced, page-turning thriller (as you'd expect from this author). I really enjoyed this - although I confess I was a bit mystified by one significant aspect of the plot but it would be a plot spoiler to reveal that.
I would definitely recommend this to both existing fans of Lisa Gardner and also anyone who is looking for a thriller.
When you see me by @lisagardnerbks is definitely a 5🌟read. It’s my second book by the author and had to read it because I was intrigued by the writing style and the narrative voice of the author in the genre.
I wasn’t disappointed at all with When you see me. A fast paced read with chilling moments that will give you goosebumps and keep you on the edge of your seat for many moments.
Three women tell a story that brings them together. In a place that is more of a tourist destination and everything looks so nice and peaceful, we find out with each page turned that in fact, the town held more long time secrets than anything you’d expect. A detective that wants to find out the truth about those crimes, a survivor of a criminal hostage and still dealing with PTSD and self esteem and a lovely girl that has been through so much in her life and can only express her thoughts through drawings.
I honestly cannot recommend this book enough.
Fast paced, full of striking characters as we've come to expect from Lisa Gardner.. Riveting and thrilling at times, this was a grippingly good read.
This is my first read of Lisa Gardner and what a great read. I can see that I have been missing out so will have to put that right. This did not, however, diminish my enjoyment of this novel at all.
Human bones are found by two hikers and these are determined to be the remains of Lilah Abenito, who has been missing for some fifteen years. Jacob Ness is believed to be responsible for the murder even though he is now dead.
Detective Sergeant DD Warren joins forces with the FBI task force to investigate, drawing in a previous victim and computer analyst in an exceptionally well-researched storyline.
The town of Niche becomes embroiled in the horrors as other bodies are discovered. As a reader I am introduced to Bonita, who is mute and manages to portray the horrific scenes she has witnessed to the FBI task force.
Thank you to NetGalley, Random House UK, Cornerstone Century and Lisa Gardner for my ARC in return for my honest review.
Excellent read and highly recommended.
I loved this! All your favourite characters together, trying to get on with each other, trying to crack the surface of a suspicious seeming small town and trace the roots of Jacob Ness own brand of hell. Would happily read more titles in the series featuring DD, Flora and Kimberley, it works. .
Flora Dane had been abducted, and kept a prisoner, for over a year by a serial killer,Jacob Ness. She escapes with killing Ness.
Now the FBI have put together a team to investigate a discovery of a body near a small Deep South town. The trouble is, it looks like the hallmark of Ness. Flora is persuaded along with friend Kevin a computer freak to tag along and give their views.
The Town has dark secrets.Bodies keep turning up buried in the forests on the mountainside .
Who can the FBI agents and local Police trust? There is so much local fear and lies when some of them turn up being murdered.
Strange but exciting page turner. Not an easy to read book with a certain style of writing that is disjointed.
Two Hikers find human bones which are determined to be that of a woman who went missing 15 years previously. It is believed that this could be the work of the late Jacob Ness, a known predator who everybody assumes must have been responsible for other victims.
This book brings together 2 main characters from 2 series of books by Lisa Gardner. Detective DD Warren and FBI Agent Kimberly Quincy who join a task force along with a clearly traumatised Flora Dane, a survivor of Ness who also features in earlier books. Whilst combing the area for further remains of the body, 3 further female bodies are found and this seemingly quiet Appalachian town of Niche turns out to be anything but.
Whilst investigating these crimes we, the readers are introduced to a a young mute girl, given the name “Bonita”, living, or should I say barely surviving as a servant in the local mayor’s house. Her muteness and horrific injuries were sustained during the murder some years previously of her mother. The character narrates her story well throughout the book and is able to tell the task force team, largely through pictures some of the horrors she has witnessed.
It would be very easy to provide further details of the book but I feel this would amount to spoilers. Suffice to say, this is an excellent novel and I highly recommend this to other readers. I confess to not having read any of the books in these 2 series but this book is considered a standalone novel and I will certainly be going back and reading the books in the series.
I would like to thank netgalley UK, Lisa Gardner, Random House UK for allowing me to read this previous to it’s release date of 20th Feb 2020 for an honest unbiased review

I have read every book by Lisa Gardner and, although this one starts slow, it lives up to her previous novels. This one features survivor Flora Dane, FBI Kimberley Quincy and Detective DD Warren. It’s fantastic to have a book where all the main characters are female and rescue themselves rather than needing a male to do it. It starts like a simple case or old bones being found and spirals from there into the most complicated case they’ve faced. The main witness is a young girl who can’t speak or communicate but Gardner still makes her strong.
It is a fantastic read and I can’t wait to read the next installment or the next standalone Gardner novel whichever comes first!
Thanks to Random house and NetGalley for an ARC.

I wasn’t a fan on this one however it was the first book I’ve read from this author and I think you would have to read more from the series for it to make more sense. However it had a good plot line and the book flowed really well. It was a good crime book.
