Due to a sudden, unexpected passing in the family a few years ago and another more recently and my subsequent (mental) health issues stemming from that, I was unable to download this book in time to review it before it was archived as I did not visit this site for several years after the bereavements. This meant I didn't read or venture onto netgalley for years as not only did it remind me of that person as they shared my passion for reading, but I also struggled to maintain interest in anything due to overwhelming depression. I was therefore unable to download this title in time and so I couldn't give a review as it wasn't successfully acquired before it was archived. The second issue that has happened with some of my other books is that I had them downloaded to one particular device and said device is now defunct, so I have no access to those books anymore, sadly.

This means I can't leave an accurate reflection of my feelings towards the book as I am unable to read it now and so I am leaving a message of explanation instead. I am now back to reading and reviewing full time as once considerable time had passed I have found that books have been helping me significantly in terms of my mindset and mental health - this was after having no interest in anything for quite a number of years after the passings. Anything requested and approved will be read and a review written and posted to Amazon (where I am a Hall of Famer & Top Reviewer), Goodreads (where I have several thousand friends and the same amount who follow my reviews) and Waterstones (or Barnes & Noble if the publisher is American based). Thank you for the opportunity and apologies for the inconvenience

A dark read that will certainly get you thinking. Wonderfully written and flows so well. Thanks to both the publishers and NetGalley for sharing their work with me

I really liked the Devil Wears Prada vibe of this book, with a lot of paranoia and suspicion thrown in. Gripping from the very start.

I enjoyed this book as it gave a background to the worlds of fashion and motherhood. It also discusses the pressures of modern life and female friends. I liked the multiple perspectives of the characters within the book.
This was a well written easy read exploring a number of issues

Pacy, stylish and suspenseful, with good characterisation. I enjoyed this book by Walker and will happily read her future work.

A book you will consume in one sitting, deliciously inviting and seductive, it's a slick page-turner that engages you from the start, with a few twists and a mix of characters you will love, loathe and want to scream at.

What a great story, just the right amount of twisty, with a good storyline and totally believable characters.

This was a great page turner and even more than I initially expected it to be.
I've seen others compare the world in which this is set to 'The Devil Wears Prada' and I would have to agree.
That may be the setting but there are still thriller elements.
It is a slow burn in the beginning, with the pace really picking up in the last third of the novel.
There were plenty of twists and turns too. And a pretty satisfying ending as well.
I could definitely see The New Girl being made into a TV series, a la Big Little Lies.
And I will definitely be keeping an eye out for what Harriet Walker does next.
Thank you to Netgalley for providing me with an advanced copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

A brilliant, fast paced story that keeps you hooked from start to finish.... I couldn't put this book down!
The characters were all so unique, each having their own troubled pasts and current quirks to live with, but the ways in which all of their stories entwined was magnificent.

With twists and turns I just did not see coming, this book is a definite must read in my opinion... I loved it.

A gripping read set in the glamorous fashion magazine world. Maggie takes over the maternity cover for the talented and sophisticated Margot. This arrangement leads to resentments, jealousies and insecurities. A darker story than suggested in a great way. Is Margot being paranoid or is Maggie as disturbing as she thinks. A page turner with great twists.

This novel follows Margot who is a fashion editor at a top magazine and is looking for someone to take over her job while she goes on maternity leave. Maggie gets the job and very early on it’s apparent that there is an envy, that quickly grows into jealousy and mistrust between them. We also learn about Margot’s friendship with Winnie, who she’s known since school. From the opening of the novel we know that someone dies so I was intrigued to know who died and if someone committed murder. This was an enjoyable novel but it wasn’t what I was expecting. I thought this book was meant to be a dark thriller but it wasn’t. It’s domestic fiction with a darkish side. I found it a slow read for the most part but it did become much more fast-paced for the last third and this part of the book did lift the book for me. I recommend this one if you like domestic dramas!

A sincere thank you to the publisher, author and Netgalley for providing me with an ebook copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review.

This is not my usual genre, I’m more into romance stories and literary fiction however I wanted to take the opportunity to read something from outside my norm. And I am glad I did!! Thank you for  opening up my mind to something totally different.

If not for the prologue, I would have started this book thinking it was a chick lit female friendship story, rather than a thriller, due to the writing style. The tone gradually gets darker though, and there are a few good twists.

The portrayal of teenage friendships, the intensity, the jealousy, the drama, was really well portrayed.

I did though find the sudden shifts in the friendships towards the end of the book at little quick to be believable, but that's only my feeling.

Margot is a frustrating narrator. If only she'd just spoke to people about some of the things going on! But this did tie in with her paranoia so it did fit in with the book...

Overall an entertaining page turner, perfect for lounging in the garden with.

Relatively easy read, good for a beach read.

At some points it did feel like two books that had been pushed together.

I received a free copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

A thoroughly enjoyable read An original concept well developed with an unusual twist at the end A good summer read

The New Girl is an entertaining and easy read that straddles the division between Devil Wears Prada-esque corporate fashion industry rivalry and a traditional thriller - but never quite commits to either type. I would have loved to see more concrete twists and more threat, but as it was the novel is a great debut.

A bit of a mixed bag. I really liked the premise and he exploration of the rivalry between a woman on maternity leave and the woman who covers her job; it was well-written and quite polished. I felt less interested by the background of teenagers' mistakes and cruelties, and in the second part, quite a bit of the plot felt too far-fetched and a bit expected. Enjoyable though.

Margot is going on maternity leave from her glamorous fashion editing job and she chooses Maggie as her temporary replacement. While she's off, Margot grows increasingly paranoid that Maggie is stealing her life. Margot was pregnant at the same time as her childhood best friend who tragically loses her baby and ghosts her. I found this quite a quick read and it was reasonably gripping but at times it felt like two different books and this kind of impacted on the ending for me.

If you have ever used a maternity leave, you will understand how it feels. A part of you is just looking forward for it to start, and another part is depressed, because “your territories” at work would be handled over to another person. And almost most of the time, you pick this person, which makes it even worse!

The New Girl is a bit about this feeling…And a lot more!

Margot is perfect, too perfect in my humble opinion, working in one of these glossy fashion magazines and having the perfect polished life and all…and she’s getting ready for her maternity leave. She picks Maggie as her replacement. And Maggie is nothing like Margot! (but is she, really?)

Margot’s best friend Winnie is/was also pregnant but she tragically loses the baby and then the two fall apart. And Winnie doesn’t return Margot’s calls.

I must admit the book has a slow start but then it picks up as it goes deeper. It’s not a “thriller” I would say, more on the vibe of “Devil Wears Prada”. A lot of exploration on emotions, friendship, insecurities, how social media may affect our lives. I believe the author, Harriet Walker had worked on a fashion magazine herself, and I think one of the good things about this book is seeing the “behind the scenes” from the first hand.
