I really enjoyed this book. It made me laugh, it made me overthink some things and it brought me a good time. I would recommend it.
I enjoyed this book, I didn’t expect to for some unknown reason but it made me laugh out loud and yet still tugged at my emotions. I really liked Effie's character, she was relatable, it was quite easy to start thinking about what I also wanted to achieve in life.
Very nearly normal is romantic, funny, and it is an inspiring read. Its easy to forget that you don’t always know whats happening ith other and that things may not always be like them appear to be. A great lesson is that we should all do what makes us happy, make the most of situations and just enjoy life.
I would recommend this book. I would read a book by this author again.
I wasn't sure if I would like this book. The main character, Effie, is miserable and not that likeable - her life hasn't turned out how she hoped it would so it nearly put me of finishing itf. But I am glad I continued. This was a funny and sometimes sad read but I enjoyed it and it made me think about how things are not always how they seem in other people's lives and you need to make the most of your life.
Effie is seacrhing for happiness and isn't everyone at some point in their life? She sees everyone geting on with her life while she is single, living with her parents and drinking too much. Theo changes her life nd she grows as a person. A non traditional love story.
This one was an unexpected treasure. At first I absolutely did not like our heroine, Effie. Her constant woe is me, my life sucks, I suck, and it's not my fault it's just who I am was annoying. But I quickly warmed up to her and even saw a lot of myself in her. And let's talk about Theo. Ohmigosh, Theo is a dream. I adored him and how he brought out the best in Effie even when she fought him at every turn. I loved their bantering and he was just pure perfection. Then, things took an unexpected turn and I was devastated. My heart stopped beating, but I knew there had to be some explanation and I hung around nursing my broken heart waiting for it and dreading it in the same breath. If you need a really touching love story in which our heroine grows and learns to become the best version of herself, grab a bottle of wine, some tissues, and dive in.
I enjoyed it for the most part although Effie was a bit much and her whole turn around felt completely unrealistic. Especially after so many parts that felt real!
Shockingly Effie checks all the boxes for an unlikable character and yet she's not which is kind of a triumph for the author in my opinion!
Theo was OK yet you just know something is coming and when it does it's kind of beyond. I suppose what bugged me was how unrealistic some things were despite a lot being totally bound in reality.
I really struggled to get into this book and have tried to do so a number of times. It isn't bad or anything like that, but it just didn't work for me and I didn't care for the main characters
I LOVED this book. I loved the storyline, the writing, the characters, the whole thing from beginning to end.
Sunderland tells a story where the main character is not a perfectly written character like so many novels have. Effie is a bit of a hot mess and her character is brilliantly written.
The evolution of Effie and the people you meet around her become part of your family, you will be invested with all of them to see where their lives go.
A Very Nearly Normal is a very different book that will bring you on a wonderfully journey of discovery, growth and learning.
I highly recommend reading this wonderful novel!
This was a nice easy romance read, that I enjoyed a lot.
The story centres around Effie, who finds herself hitting dead ends in all aspects of her life. She dislikes her job, she has no love life of which to speak, and she's increasingly drinking way too much. Enter our romantic interest, Theo.
Initially he seems like he could be the answer to all of Effie's problems. He's sweet, charming and, although Effie initially struggles to trust him, he proves himself to be consistent and loyal. However, there's just one problem... Theo is hiding a secret of his own, something that could totally change everything and drive Effie away for good.
This was right up my street. Effie is a good central character, full of sarcasm and quite cynical about life. She has a tough exterior, but I felt like it was clear she really wanted someone to love her properly right from the start, and I so wanted to see her get her happy ending. I enjoyed the twists and turns of her romance with Theo. At times I didn't know whether I trusted him either or what I wanted to happen next. Well written!
Very nearly normal by Hannah Sunderland
The story is about a pair of lost souls. Effie is not very likeable at the onset but seems to improve when she meets Theo. Her own worst enemy. Her and Theo seem to work well together .
A very likeable story shows how some people do change for the better.
Probably one of my favourite books I've read this year. This book had it all. Made me laugh, cry, made me angry, sad, happy. Characters were perfect and even if sometimes drove me little crazy, I coudlnt put the book down. Now I've finished it, I'm sad and don't know what to do with myself. So sad to leave the characters behind. It's been a while since the book made me feel like this.
I really loved this story. I think we can all be a bit like Effie sometimes. The plot was easy to follow, but not as predictable as you think it’s going to be. I’d love to hear more about Effie’s future adventures
I've tried multiple time to read this and just DNF. For some reason this book doesn't keep my attention.
Oh my, I loved this one!
It was just the kind of book I needed and I am so happy I didn't rush into it. A fun ( I actually laughed out loud!), inspiring, heartwarming book I highly recommend you read.
There were some issues I had with it, but I won't go into them since it's subjective and not something that may influence your experience.
I greatly enjoyed this book, thank you for giving me a preview copy. The plot was interesting and fast paced and I sympathised with the characters. This is the first novel I have read by this author but I hope it will not be the last!
Effie... what a hate-to-love relationship this turned out to be. It's hard to get in to a story when you hate the protagonist but slowly and surely I started to care. This story is full of emotional moments, and big twists that you don't see coming! It reminded me a lot of the movie "Last Christmas". I'd definitely read another by this author again.
Not only did I fall in love with the book, I fell in love with Effie and Theo. This book is now my favourite of 2020.
Very well written, easy to read and so emotionally gripping you will remember it for years to come.
I laughed, I cried and I felt anger too. I already miss the characters.
I'm not a big fan of this kind of books to be honest but once in a while we all need something that is out of our comfort zone, and I'm happy that my choice was this book.
This is not the typical romance and that makes it unique. The truth is that in the beginning i didn't really liked the main haracter but i guess that's kinda the point because in the end i was pleasantly surprised by the character’s growth, change and self aware of her flaws.
It's easy and enjoyable summer reading that i absolutely recommend!
Thank you to Netgalley, Avon books and of course Hannah Sunderland for allowing me to read this in return for my honest review.
A beautifully written story about love, loss, and learning to love yourself. This book had everything I could possibly have wanted.
The main characters Effie and Theo were instantly lovable and it was impossible to not be rooting for them throughout the story.
Effie found ways to cope with her struggles, one of which was alcohol, which I know unfortunately does affect alot of people. I thought this was written so perfectly, and sensitively, that it really did make you love Effie all the more.
I could talk about this book all day long, and I know without a doubt that it is one of those stories that will stay with me for a long time.
Thank you to Netgalley, Avon books and of course Hannah Sunderland for allowing me to read this ARC in return for my honest review.
I’m not sure if it wasn’t the right time for me to read this but I just found the first chapter really difficult, almost depressing reading.
Will try to read again and revisit the review.
I received this book complimentary from NetGalley but all opinions are my own.
I liked it, truly but the characters were difficult to relate to, personally. I liked them but not loved. I felt like they really tried to emphasize Effie’s feelings/depression but just it didn’t fit in my view. I felt like Effie was over dramatic and just plain annoying. I didn’t like that the storyline with Kate didn’t repair or end. It just left somewhere in the middle. I also was annoyed with Theo and his medical issues. Like cmon. Own yourself and don’t jeopardize your health over nothing. I understand not revealing but it just was SO DRAWN OUT. I just didn’t love this and wouldn’t recommend.
