Really enjoyed this poetry book. These poems make you work. They are not easily accessible, but a read through of them, once or twice, they truly come to life.
They packed full of deeper symbols and metaphors. But they are contemporary and it just works. Loveys really knows how to craft a beautiful, deep poem.
Thank you to NetGalley and ECW Press for accepting my request to read and review Miscreations by Grant Loveys.
I enjoyed reading Miscreations. As with any collection, I like some more than others. For the most part, I found the poems to be thought-provoking and interesting. Each poem is written with direct language and imaginative metaphors and subject matter.
There were several lines throughout the book that struck me, causing me to reread and really attempt to interpret their meaning. This is a book that you don't want to rush through. Take your time and let the poems entertain your thoughts.
If you enjoy poetry, I would highly recommend this collection. By the time I made it to the end, I had reread most of it multiple times. Letting the words set in felt important, necessary.
"I was a wick and you hoarded your flame. All I ever wanted was to burn."
"Miscreations" was a rich and wordy whirlwind of a book. Many times throughout my reading I opted to real aloud to myself to help the sounds create better imagery for myself and I think it was my favorite part. This book came to ask me to participate, to let each vowel and consonant tell its story on my tongue and I am IMPRESSED. While a small handful of poems left something to be desired, for example, "A Little Death" the majority of others boasted colorful and heartfelt metaphors and frankness.
Top 3 poems are "Entropy", "Minus Pills", and "Talk To Me".
"Seems I'd been gas-soaked for most my life, wandering through a shimmer as whatever I had to lose rose up out of my bones and took to the air in fume. I was a wick and you hoarded your flame. All I ever wanted was to burn."
This book of free verse or odd verse poetry was amazingly rich.
One might read it and find themselves lost as they can sometimes sound like the poetry of an adhd child losing track of what they were saying but still rambling.
Yet then one finds that all the words connect and make sense but see the world at odd angles.
You’ll find depth and wisdom and frivolity and nuggets.
My favorite is the line: Life is what happens in the time between inconveniences.
Check this out for a fun read!
Thank you for the opportunity to read and review this book of poetry. It is touted as "...Miscreations focuses instead on how people and situations can be created from unstable, often opposing, elements and examines how these people and situations manage to survive.." I absolutely loved that idea and knew I had to read this book. I also really like the title! This is definitely not your normal book of poetry. Definitely recommend.
