I am always ready for some good BBQ. It's not always something you can find on the East Coast. We're not known for our BBQs as much as the states to the west of us. I enjoyed learning not only delicious recipes but also useful grilling information and new meal ideas.
The Smoke Shop is a popular restaurant located in Massachusetts, and hungry diners flock to the three locations to enjoy some of the best smoky barbecue in the nation. Andy Husbands, award winning Pitmaster and his sidekick William Salazar have finally given in to all the requests for their recipes in The Smoke Shop's Backyard BBQ: Eat, Drink, and Party Like a Pitmaster. Now those who don’t live in Massachusetts can enjoy the incredible food. Just reading the book makes one want to jump on a plane to taste the food in person.
This excellent cookbook has everything needed to learn how to do perfect smoked food, but it also includes excellent side dishes. The prose is well-written and interesting; the book can be read for enjoyment alone, if not cooking. There are instructions for everything needed to set up a home barbecue pit, and the chapters cover things like Backyard BBQ, Taco Tuesday, Tailgate and Holiday Party, as well as The Cocktail Party, The Fancy Party, and the Big Brunch. There are also chapters on Basics and an ingredient guide. The recipes are written so that anyone can follow them easily. Favorite recipes include Chicken and Waffles with Red-Eye Gravy, Smoky Hot BBQ Sauce, Brisket Ropa Vieja Tacos, Derby Slab Bars, and Garrett’s Tex-Mex Shrimp. Appetizers – side dishes – vegetables – main dishes – desserts – this cookbook has it all.
One of the best reasons to purchase this excellent cookbook is the photographs. The photographer, Ken Goodman, should win awards for them, and there are beautiful photos of almost every mouthwatering recipe in the book. Anyone who loves smoked food along with yummy side dishes will want to pick up a copy of this excellent cookbook.
Special thanks to NetGalley for supplying a review copy of this book.
I have read and watched a variety of bbq shows and cookbooks and this one ranks with the best. The layout is stunning the pictorials are well placed and the food mouth watering. I tried two of the recipes with my small smoker and oven. I could follow the directions and the ingredient lists were not too far fetched or difficult. I will admit a working knowledge of marinades and rubs would help but the language was straight forward. A great gift for the pit master in your home
The Smoke Shop’s Backyard BBQ is a recipe book that has so much more than just ideas for grilling on the BBQ. This book contains so many different ideas, such as Taco Tuesdays and holiday get-togethers. It is a must-have for anyone who loves hosting backyard barbecues.
As it is nearing the end of February in my corner of the world, it is still winter and not quite BBQ season yet. However, The Smoke Shop’s Backyard BBQ has me dreaming of warmer weather and the fantastic food that I will creating with the smoker. ❀ EXTENSIVE INSTRUCTIONS
What is most useful in this book is the layout of the recipes. The authors have given extensive instructions on how to prepare and cook the meals, as well as describe the equipment needed. It is an easy to follow cookbook that also has gorgeous images and some wonderful commentary. Those familiar with the Boston restaurant the authors own will enjoy getting a little backstory from the pitmasters themselves.
There are quite a few recipes that I am excited to try this spring, including Beef Prime Rib au Jus. The accompanying sides, desserts and cocktails also make it easy to pull any party off with ease. I did give the Baked Macaroni & Cheese with Bacon and Asparagus a try, as it was something I could create in my oven. I did lighten it up a little bit by omitting some of the fat content and I used bread crumbs instead of saltines for the top. It was definitely a hit at my house and a nice change to traditional mac and cheese.
If you are a fan of the grill and smoked meats, The Smoke Shop’s Backyard BBQ is one cookbook to watch for. It has just about everything you will ever need to know about perfecting your grilling game.
I was so happy to receive an ARC of this cookbook. I am always looking for new BBQ recipes because we use our grill and smoker ALL the time. The pictures were amazing and all the recipes were easy to follow with easy to come by ingredients. My favorite were the Taco Tuesday ones! Such a great book!
It is a feat to take a pretty photo of large smoked/grilled meats since it's usually a blob of brown and this book has some really great photography. The food looks awesome. That said, this book is a head scratcher for sure. It starts off fantastic with a variety of meats and then it veers wildly into a direction of sides and baked goods. The book is just really confusingly organized. There's a salmon dish next to asparagus next to a whipped potatoes recipe followed by cornbread. I suppose this intends to give you a full scope of a specific kind of party but I would much prefer a more organized approach - proteins in one section, veggies in another, etc. And then give us some pages that list the various recipes you'd combine for different parties. I would struggle to find things all of the time. If this book were organized it would be a 5 star for sure but I'm just left here wondering why there's a great smoked brisket in the very beginning and a crown roast of pork 180 pages later.
I really enjoyed this cookbook. It had easy to follow directions, and great pictures! The recipes looks delicious.
Living in Europe, my concept of a barbecue is of meat grilled (not smoked) over a charcoal fire, so I was pleasantly surprised on a visit to California to go to an excellent BBQ restaurant to eat deliciously smoked meat.
I am really enthusiastic about building my own smoker and making the same kind of meat at home. In hindsight I should have realized that Smokeshop Backyard BBQ would not suit me as a beginner "BBQ-er" with only sparse information at the end of the book on setting up a smoker at home. It does contain some useful recipes for cooking meat like brisket, pulled pork, spareribs, but there are just too many other recipes that I would never use including cocktails, snacks, macaroni and overly sweet desserts. Chicken with waffles and a gravy made from 2 cups of coffee is just not my kind of food!
This cookbook is a keeper the recipes are fantastic and Nd the variety is excellent. This book contains a large variety of sides beverages and desserts as well as some very interesting and tasty barbecue recipes. I plan to use this cookbook often and already have plans to get a few for friends. I received this book from NetGalley for an honest review.i highly recommend this one the recipes are amazing.
This book takes the approach that BBQ can be the food, or the event. The first chapter is dedicated to the food I call BBQ. It has some recipes that look really good. The rest of the chapters (2-7) are dedicated to the "event". What I really like is its approach to bringing BBQ flavors (smoked, etc.) to some less predictable events like taco tuesday, holiday parties, and "fancier" gatherings. All around a good concept, but not completely dedicated to delicious BBQ meats.
I received an advanced reader copy of this book to read in exchange for an honest review via netgalley and the publishers.
This book is sure to set your taste buds tingling and mouth watering!
What an amazing recipie book packed full of tantalising foods to try smoke shop style!
I've never even thought of half of the ideas in this book and cannot wait to try some of them this summer.
I loved how the cooks were introduced at the beginning of the book and also the tips at the back of the book too.
This was a fun cookbook. It had a variety of sections, such as he backyard bbq, cocktail party, taco tuesday, big brunch, fancy party, and holiday party and a bunch of interesting recipes. There was also quite a few recipes I would love to try, such as smoked Oysters on the Half Shell. The book also has some amazing photos, which made it even more fun.
